lina Gets Stak? Races-Big
Entries.
Columbia, a. C.?(Special.)?In all the
life of the stute Pair?forty year*
tli re have never been anything like
the races that are .scheduled for tills
year. The fair opens October 26th and
? loses October 30th. There will be four
days of racing. Already live stake
races have been arranged for trotters
and pacers. Purses will be offered for
both harness and running horses.
Between (6.000.00 and J/.ooo.O? has
been offered us prizes for the -.e races,
rue attractive prises, together with the
fact that so many of the Northern and
Kastern tracks have hud trouble with
the racers, will make the entries here
fair week the best aggregation or fast
horses ever seen anywhere In the
South.
Strings of hors.s from the most re
nowned Stahles in the country will be
here fair week. With the races m arly
two months off, the entiles tor the
stake races counted up to ninety-three,
and it Is expected that more than a
hundred of. America's finest racers will
he entered tor the stake races.
The purse races will be much above
tile average tills year. .More money Is
offered and better horses will he raced.
The track has been put in apple pie
order and the grandstands enlarged
and reworked. This was necessary to
accommodate the immense crowds that
will witness all of tb?" races during fair
week, this being tbu first of the series
in the Virginia-Carolina circuit.
There will he other sports. Davidson
College plays Clcmson on Wednesday,
and the University of South Carolina
plays Davidson College on Thursday.
Mr. R. C. Kecnan will have the races
in charge, and he knows his business.
President Mobl?y expects the ra s
this year to hrln? people to the fair
from every part of the state and from
many surrounding fltntea.
Off for the Philippines.
Mr. Sam II. Shorard of Greenwood
was in the city last week visiting the
family of Mr. W. II. Oilkerson, leaving
Sunday for home. On yesterday Mr.
Shcrard left Greenwood by an overland
journey to San Francisco whence ho
goes to the Philippine Islands in the
government employ. Mr. Shcrard is a
grandson of Mrs. A. F. Shorard of this'
city.
