Volunteers For Traynham Guards Want
ed Now for Next Years Encampment
The following order from Adjutant
General Boyd will be of interest to the
members of Company "D" and pros
pective members:
The attention of the National Guard
of this State is called to the following
extract from letter received from War
Department, Division of Militin Affairs:
It is profitless and an unnecessary
expense to the State and to the United
States to have men participate in coast
defense exercises, or other field maneu
vers or exercises, who have not re
ceived previous instruction in the armo
ries in the "School of the Soldier" and
such other elementary instruction as re
cruits should receive before partici
pating in such military exercises. So
important is this regarded that the De
partment will not hereafter approve
the muster and payment of enlisted
men of the Organized Militia from
United States funds who have not been
bona fide members of the organizations
for at least six months prior to the date
of the commencement of the maneu
vers or exercises, and who have not
been reasonably well instructed in the
"School of the Soldier, "Small-Arms
Firing Regulations" and "Manual of
Guard Duty," to include the following:
Drill Regulations, United States Army,
edition of 1904:
Paragraphs 30 to 37, inclusive.
Paragraphs 39 to 79, inclusive.
Paragraphs 91 to 157, inclusive.
Small-Arms Firing Regulations:
Paragraphs 1 to 56, inclusive.
Manual Guard Duty.
Paragraphs 194 to 269, inclusive.
Parographs 864 to 368, inclusive.
Paragraphs 372 to 376, inclusive.
It is hereby ordered that no regimen
tal or company commander shall take
to any coast defense exercises, or other
field maneuver camp, any enlisted man
who has not been a bona fide member
of the National Guard of South Caro
lina for at least six months prior to
date of commencement of the exercises
or maneuvers, and who has not received
the prescribed preliminary instruction
outlined by the War Department.
By order of the Commander-in-Chicf.
J. C. BOYD,
Adjutant and Inspector General.
Official:
WILLIAM T. BROCK,
Assistant Adjutant and Inspector
General.
Captain O. W. Babb is giving much
time, thought and energy toward per
fecting the membership of Traynham
Guards. It is his desire to have the
very best company in the State, com
posed of the most reliable, best be
haved, most intelligent young men ol
the community. To this end he issues
a call for at least a dozen men, whom
he hopes to enroll by Christmas. This
time limit is set because according to
the above order those enrolled under
six months before the time of encamp
ments will not be permitted to partici
pate.
Traynham Guards is already one of
the finest companies in South Carolina,
but some more men are needed; sober,
well-behaved, intelligent men. It is
hoped that such as these will enlist as
early as possible.
