SENSATIONAL PLAY COMINU.
"The Clansman" to be Seen Here with
Big New >ork Cast and Production.
That much talked of play, "The
Clansman," is booked for a date at the
opera house here. It will appear on
Friday night, October 16th, with I lie
big New York cast of favorite actors
and a splendid metropolitan production.
Lovers of American drama at its best
look forward with pleasant anticipation
to this engagement, which is among
tho most noteworthy of the season.
The play is as celebrated as any dra
matic ofFering of the past fifty years.
Founded on those famous novels. "The
Leopard's Spots" and "The Clansman," ]
it is in character and treatment an or
iginal work. No scene which could ,
justly give offense from a dramatic or
moral standpoint has been retained;
but it is rich in comedy, in love interest
and full of tragic power, particularly
in its delineations of the terrible Ku
Klux Klan. Among the chief scenes
that are utilized are those of the Ku
Klux Klan den, avast ill-lighted cave J
in the mountain side; the rose garden I
of the Cameron home; the interior of
this historic South Carolina mansion;
and the library of Lieutenant-Governor
Lyncb's home. The action of the play
does not lag for a moment. Pictures of
Southern life pass and repnss while the
thrilling reconstruction story is heing
enacted. Indeed, "The Clansman" has
been highly praised for its fidelity to
the Southern atmosphere. Whether
one cares anything nbout the political
struggles between the Carpetbaggers
and Conservatives or not, he is en
thralled by it simply as a play. The
best prooi of this is that " the Clans
man' has been recoived with equal en
thusiasm in all parts of the country
regardless of sectional lines. Its suc
cess was as great the past three sea
sons in New York, Chicago and other
great Northern cities as in its whirl
wind tour of the South, tor "Tnc
Clansman's" initial visit to the Pacific
coast the original production and com
pany has been secured, including such
well known actors as: Arthur DeVoy,
Evelyn Faber, Ahner H. Symmonds,
Edward B. McGuinncss, M. A. Carpen
ter, Irving L. Quimby,Joseph It.Garry,
John F. Carl ton, las. K. Lorraine, Wil
liam Levis, James O. Sanders, Willard
Tracy Flanagan, Georgie fester Woods
ami Jessamine Woods.
Orphan Work Day.
There is a family of 250 orphan chil
dren at the Epworth orphanage, Colum
bia, S. C, Methodist.
There are 250 orphans at the Connie
Maxwell, orphanage, Greenwood, S. ('.,
Baptist.
'1 here are 250 orphans at the Thorn
well orphanage, Clinton, s. c., Presby
terian.
There are 60 orphans at the Church
home, Charleston, S. ('., Epi-i opalian.
The Lutheran Church home is at Sa
lem, Va.
The Hebrew home is at Atlanta, Ca.
The Roman Catholic homes are in'
Charleston, s. c.
The support and care of all these va
rious denominational institutions, with
their largo body of fatherless children,
is a sufficient appeal to every heart.
Some years ago it was suggested, by
Rev. Howard Crumley, of Atlanta, Ga.,
that on the first Saturday and Sabbath
of October all those who love children i
set apart those days forgathering funds
to relievo the needs of the fathorlcss.
On that Saturday let ovorybody, old and
young, rich and poor, devote tho day to
the orphanages, each man sending Ids
gift to the orphanage he loves the best
or that lies nearest his heart. The
Georgia scheme worked well. For sev
eral years an effort has been made to
rouse an equal interest in South Caro
lina, and Alabama and Florida have also
taken it up. In every community some
zealous brother might take up the mat
ter and push it and the day's work from
everybody would go to the orphans.
This proposition is not in the inn rest of
any one orphanage; it is intended for
each one to give to the orphanage near
est his heart. Civ.- Saturday'.-- wages
to tin? orphans. Gather the proceeds
on the Sabbath ami forward to tho in
stitutions above named. It will besure
to reach the right spot if drafts and
checks are made out to the name of the
institution itself and provisions shippi (I
to the same. We have no doubt that
when an individual community makes
special request of the railway authori
ties Hour and rice and molasses or any
other products would lind them willing
to deliver w ithout charge.
Notice that this is simply it state
ment. Urgent appeals are "not nee<
sary. The orphans need help. The in
stitutions are unable to give it without
the backing of the people. At this sen
."-on all their treasuries are greatly de
pleted. Do not overlook the day.
A Traveling Man's Experience.
"I must tell you my experience on
an East bound ?. R. & N. R. It. train
from Pendlcton to Lo Grande, Ore.,"
writes Sam A. Carher. a well known
traveling man. "I was in the smoking
department with some other trav< ling
men when one of them went out i lo
the coach and came back and sold,
'There is a woman sick unto death in
the car.' I at once got up and wcnl
out, found her very ill with cramp
colic, her hands and arms wa re drawn
up so you could not straighten them
and with a death like look on her face.
Two or three ladies were working with
her and giving her whiskey. I went te
my suit east; and got my hot tie of Cham
berlain's Colic, Cnolera and Diarrhoea
Remedy (I never travel without it),
ran to tho water tank, put a double dose
of the medicine in the glass, pound
some water into it and stirred it with a
pencil, then I bad quite a time to got
the ladies to let me give it to her, but
I succeeded. I could at once see the
effect and I worked with her, rubbing
her hands, and in twenty minutes I gave
her another dose. By this time we
were almost into Le Grande, where i
was to leave the train. I gave the bot
tle to the husband to be used in CH 0
another dose should be needed, but by
the time the train ran into Le Grando
she was all right and I received the
thanks of every passenger in the car."
