Miss Shell proved one of the most charming hostesses who have yet entertained the club, the reception Fri day afternoon being of unusual pleas ure. Nations was the game of the day and a great source of pleasure it was, too. A delightful time was had and then a delicious salad course was served. Holt. Miss Tilhnan is teaching in Elizabeth City, N. C. Miss Grace Simmons after visiting her cousin Miss Blanche Simmons in Greenwood, returned home Monday. 0 0 0 The society news of Laurens which appears from week to week in the daily papers of the state is handled in The Advertiser office. It is the desire of the correspondent to give due notice to all the social events in the city. Mr. W. C. Irby's Statement. To the Editor of The I.aureus Adver tiser: My attention has been called to an article in The Advertiser of the 2nd inst. entitled "Mr. Kelly Howell's State ment" which requires a reply. I re gret that you seem determined to mis quote me and use other methods to place me in a false light before the good people of my county. I do not care how much you light me if you will only confine yourself to the truth. The following is the statement you claim Mr. Howell asked you to make for him. I "In last weeks advertiser appeared the following: 'In the course of his speech last Fri day Mr. W. C. Irby, Jr., gave expres sion to a rather serious charge. He said it had been told him that the had er of the Prohibitionists in Union was running three blind tigers; whereupon Mr. Richey asked him to name the man. Mr. Irby replied that Mr. Howell. at Phllpot's store, would tell him. This matter is respectfully referred t<^ the police authorities in Union. It see ns that the violation of the law must be very open and flagrant for it to be, known here. We have no idea who \ 'the leader of the prohibitionists in Union' is, neither do we care we1 n. c'y wish to call attention to the in- ] cid here.1 I. Howell called at the Advertisers office Thursday and requested tha: we publish a most emphatic denial of the alleged utterances. He made verbal statement to the effect that he ha.: not told Mr. Irby that 'the leader of the prohibitionists in Union was running three blind tigers' ar.d denounce.: the charge as maliciously false.' Rice was the leader in tho fight for prohibition ami any statement that 1 said that Rev. L. M. Rico was selling whiskey was absolutely false." (signed) R K HOW Kid,. When Mr. Mowed says over his sig nature that I was mistaken as to the number of blind tigers I must admit that I could have been mistaken. When I saw that you had misquoted me, I went to see Mr. Howell to toll him that I would demand that you cor rect the mistake as I knew that he did not mean Mr. Rice and 1 would not have quoted what he told me if 1 had thought he referred to him. He told | me that he had already demanded that yOU correct the mistake ami i waited to see what you said. You said you did not know who "the leader of the prohibitionists in Union is." If you do not you ought to, for if I mistake not you was working for bis ' paper at the time and it looks like you were determined to twist my language into a reflection upon a minister. No one could blame Mr. Howell for | being indignant when he was reported as reflecting upon his minister. W. C. IRBY .1 R. Lauren*. S. (.'.. Sept. 7. 1908. Editor's Note: As the reading public will readily discern the purpose and in tent of the above statements, when considered With all the preceding arti cles on the subject, very little comment by us is necessary. Tho matter re solves itself into this form: The Adver tiser reported Mr. Irby as saying "THE leader of the prohibitionists" and Mr. Irby claims ho said "ONE of the lead ers." We credit Mr. Irby with hon-; esty in his claim, and so doing have no hesitancy in granting htm the above space to make it. Our version has ap peared in a previous issue. Concerning what Mr. Howell told Mr. Irby.it is not in our province to discuss: we were to deal with Mr. Irby's PUBLIC DEC LARATION only. Mr. Howell's ver bal statement to The Advertiser con forms in substance with his signed statement above if we read it aright. There is but one point at issue, namely: whether or not Mr. Irby said "the" or "one of the" leaders of the prohibi tionists, and Mr. Irby's foregoing card closes the discussion in The Advertiser.
