LAURENS, SOUTH CAROLINA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, IMOcS. NUMBER 4 GREATEST FLOOD IN HALF CENTURY Property Loss In Laurons County Unparalleled. It. It. TRAFFIC CU P OFF Mouses and Bridges Swept Away, Crops Submerged and Farm I.amis Terribly Washed. Not since the memorable flood of 1oT>2 has tins section been visited by a great er water fall than thatof Monday night and Tuesday, and the damage wrought to crops, farm lands, roads and bridges and railway property cannot be even approximately estimated. The heavy rain of Monday night, followed by the unprecedented downpour Tuesday af ternoon, caused all the streams to rise rapidly and by G o'clock the high water mark of over a half century standing was broken and the greatest Hood this generation ever witnessed had things in its grasp. As a result practically all railway Ira Hie in this section had to be aban doned before nightfall and travel over the public roads and bridges was ren dered impracticable and dangerous. Three benches under the Columbia, Newberry & I,aureus railroad trestle over Little Kiver hero were washed away and the last train to pass over ????is the return train to Columbia be tween 4 and 5 o'clock after making a I trip up the Greenville road in or der to make a transfer connection with t lie regular passenger from Greenville \ which >vas cut off by reason of several washouts. Moth the North Harper street and Bast Main street bridges <>\er Little river were slightly wrecked und team travel over them was stopped Wednesday morning. Practically all the bridges over Kabun creeks and some on Itocdy river are reported l^olie, while the gin houses at McDanicl's mill. OU Kabun creek, and Culbortson's, on Reedy river, wore . wept away. It is also reported that the dwelling of Mr. Klmorc, the miller at Culbortson's, met a similar fate. The trestle over Saluda river on the C. ? W. C. road was put out of commis sion early Tuesday night as was the public bridge at Kimree. Neither was washed away but both wen; rendered linsa fe. Travel to the city yesterday was cut olT from almost every quarter and full particulars of the Hood's damage, of course, could not lie ascertained. How ever, enough is known to show that the , property loss in Laurens county alone BUY AN CAMPAIGN CONTINUES TO UKOW Forty-two dollar.*, and BCVCIlty-fivo cents have so far been contributed l?y the Democrats of Laurcnsto the Demo cratic National campaign fund, most of winch has been voluntary contribution as the committee have as yet made no active canvass. Dispatches from Columbia early Wednesday morning predict the cer tain election of Ansel over Bloasc. The returns were very incomplete and little over half the polled vote had been received. From the meagre returns Ansel received 28,83-1 against 18,740 for Blease. It appears that Smith and Fv.ms will be in the second race for the senate with Khett a close third. Very little of the Spartanburg and Charles ton vote is contained in the following figures, which were received as the latest returns Wednesday morning: Evans, 11,000; Grace, 279; Johnstone, 5,000; Lumpkin, 1,993; Martin, 1,999; Khett, 0,529; Smith, 12,198. The city was stirred Monday morn ing by the news that some time during the night Mr. C, ('. Wilson, white man about "fifty years old, had com mitted suicide in the police4 station house by hanging himself with the blanket from his hunk. Patrolman W. II. Dodson discovered the pendant body at about l o'clock in tho morning on a casual stroll through the building. Life was extinct, the neck having been broken. Inquest was held at 0 o'clock Tuesday morning. Mr. Wilson had been taken in charge by the police yesterday afternoon at about r> o'clock for being drunk and dis ly; he has been arrested frequent for the same canst-and detained over itij hi. bast night ho called for a blanket and ch ef Bagwell attended to lum. SOME OF THE WINNERS In Other Contests n Second Election Will Have to Settle It?Forecast of These Racers. Pursuant to tin* rules of the Domo cratic party, the first primary election was held ill I,aureus county Tuesday, August 25th. The day was ono of the most disagreeable that have ever boon known and doubtless hundreds were kept away from the polls. In Lnurcns county the total voto will not exceed 2,SOU. Returns from the various pre cincts were secured with unusual and unprecedented difficulty owing to the heavy rains and the damage done bridges and wires. 't he vote in tabulated form printed today is all that could he secured Up to the last moment Wednesday afternoon. While there are not many definite re sults that can he gleaned from this vote, still it will he seen that Mr. R. D. Lloyd is elected to the Mouse of Rep resentatives, and that Mr, W. C. Irhy whose election is not. assured, has a lead over the others that will not likely lie changed. It seems to he altogether unset t led among Messrs. Richoy, Sul livan ngd Todd! Mr. Cunningham is out. of the running. Mr. John 1'". Molt is undoubtedly elected clerk of court, over bis one oppononet, Mr. C. A. Power. Messrs, ifairston and Watts will run it I over for Coroner. The race between Messrs. Cannon and Wharton is very close and tin- i -turns yet to come in may effect the present standing. Messrs Pitts and Nash run over superintendent, of education. For county auditor it. appears that the second race will be bo t ween Messrs. McCravy and Dor roh. Messrs Roper and Maily are elected commissioners. Mr. J. D. Mock is re-elected treas urer by a good majority over his one opponent, Mr. J. Wade Anderson. In Laurens township Mr. J. M. I lud gens for magistrate defeated Mr. W. R. Richoy, Jr., by a small majority. Returns have been secured from only twenty-two IkiXCH giving the vote on State offices. Ansel and Blcase ran together in this county much more closely than was expected, there being not two hundred VOlCS between them. Boyd, Swearingon, Canslor and Cauglt man seemed to be favorite.-, m Laurens. following is the total vote up to late Wednesday afternoon: Kvans, to?; Grace, 3; Johnslone, !MM); Lumpkin, 180; Martin, 255; Illicit. ?51; Smith, -1-4-1; Ansel, 1,052; Blcase, 1,245; Brooker, 4515; Jones, 1,850; Boyd, 1,571; Thompson, Ij'Kt; lOhnoro, KlO; Melli champ, 215; Swearingon, 1,130; Cans lor, 1,205; Caughman, 247; Fishburno, Richardson, 105; Summcrsclt, .'isl*.
