EVENTS OF A WEEK AHOUND MADDEN Death of Dr. (ioilfrey Deeply Regretted. Successful Revival Meeting At Prospect. Madden, August 18th.- The revival meeting closed at Prospect with tho addition of 17 members. Much interest was manifested and we hope great and lasting good was done. The candidates will be baptized next 4th Sunday. Mrs. Clyde Martin is spending a month with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. .1. ft. Finley, hoping the change will prove beneficial to the little babe, which seems to be somewhat improved. Misses Azile and Myra WotVord left Wednesday for a short stay with rela tives at Woodruff. Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Teague spent last Sunday with Mr. Will Teague, of the lleaverdam section. Mr. W. F. Cunningham, of Kinards, paid us a Hying visit last Thursday. He was accompanied by his sister, Mrs. M. T. Allison, and they visited relatives at Cold Point Thursday night. He "smole a smile" when he told us that be was now "grandpa." Dr. Culbertson and wife, of Georgia, have been the quests of Mrs. J. I). Culbertson. Master Ryan Martin is enjoying a ten days' outing at Stomp Springs. Dr. G. W. Cunningham left last Fri day for Ithaca, N. Y., where he will spend one month perusing the library. 1' com there he goes to Vermont to as sume his duties in Middlobury College. His many friends and relatives wish him abundant success in his "far away" home. Miss Josle Martin is spending :i while with her grandmother and other rela tives. Dr. B. F. (Jodfrey was well known in this community anil his many friends were shocked to hear of his tragic death. Especially do we sympathize with his young wife and aged mother. Miss Ethel Bryson left last week for a short stay with relatives at Cross Hill. She will go from there to assume her duties as trained nurse in a sanita rium in Columbia. Mrs. Simpson Bailey, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Ettie Cun ningham, has returned to her homo in Union county, near Scdalia. Mrs. Ettie* Cunningham came near losing her residence by lire Saturday afternoon. Had it been at night it would most assuredly have been de stroyed. It is supposed to have been started by rats, as a box of rags in side the closet were ablaze and the room full of smoke when it was dis covered. The drought and intensive hetit of the past week was broken yesterday by re freshing showers. .Misses Josie and Juanita Martin left yesterday afternoon to attend a bouse party given by their cousin, Miss Janie Brown, in honor of two of her young lady friends from Spartanburg. Mr. W. H. Hudgens and family spent yesterday at Mr. T. S. Langs ton'a. Mr. It. J. Langston seems to enjoy "scursions" as he "took in" both the Charleston and Ashevillc. Notice of a Special Election To be bold in the School District of the Town of Luurens for the Purtuise of Voting Upon the Question of Whether or Not the Hoard of Trustees of Said School District Shall Issue Honds to the Amount of Ten Thousand Dollars for the Purpose of Erecting a New Graded School Huilding in the Said School District. Notice is hereby given that an elec tion will be held in the School District of the Town of Luurens on Thursday, the 17th day of Sept., 1908, for the purpose of voting upon the question as to whether or not tno Hoard of Trus tees in said School District shall issue bonds to the amount of Ton Thousand Dollars for the purpose of erecting a new Graded School Huilding in said School District. The polls will be open at the Clerk's ollicc, In the City Council Chamber in the City of Laurens, from 9 o'clock in the forenoon until 4 o'clock in tho af ternoon. At said election the residents of said School District, which embraces the corporate hunts of .the City of Laurens, who are duly qualified to vote under the constitution and lajvs of the State of South Carolina, shall be allowed to vote. Those voting in favor of the issuing of said bonds shalj vote, a written or printed ballot, upOn which the words "for the issuing of bonds" are written or printed thereon, and those opposed to the issuing of said bonds shall vote a similar ballot, upon which the words written or printed thereon. Said election has been ordered by the Hoard of Trustee's of the said School District and will be held pursuant to the order of the said Hoard of Trustees of said School District, and in pursu ance of an Act of the General Assem bly of the State of South Carolina, passed at the session of 1008 and ap proved Feb. 20, 1908.
