THE PROHIBITION
LAW IS EFFECTIVE
tellers From City and County Officials
Showing the Good Effects in
Different Counties.
There seems to he no question as to
tho good effects of prohibition laws,
judging from the letters below from
the clerks of court of the various coun
ties named. These inquiries were sent
out by those in charge of the State
prohibition movement and the answers
received are as follows:
STATEMENT PROM BDOEFIELD county.
1. How long has your county been
dry? Ans. About 24 years.
2. What effect has it had on business?
Ans. I think the general impression is
that business is more satisfactory.
3. Have you been able to enforce the
law? Ans. I think the law is pretty
well unforced; as much so as was cx
pectcd. Of course there is occasionally
some whiskey sold here and in the
county, but I think the sale of it in the
town and county is on the decrease.
I. What effect has it had with refer
ence to sobriety and good order? Ans.
It has had wonderful effect in improv
ing good order and decreasing drunken
ness.
5. To what extent has the sale of li
quor and drinking been reduced. Ans.
1 do not think there is more than 10 per j
cent, of drinking and drunkenness now
as when whiskey was sold in town of j
Fdgelield.

('. ('. P. of Kdgelield County.
STATEMENT FROM CLERK OK CHEROKEE
county.
1. How long has your county been
dry? Ans. Since Dec. 1st, 1001.
;i What effect has it had on business?
Ans. it think business has increased 25
to T.IJ j.>e.r cenl.
'?'<. Have, you been able to enforce the
law? Ans. Yes. Occasionally we have
a few eases in the courts for violation
tof the law, but no more than formerly.
I. What effect has it had with refer
>enco to sobriety and good order? Ans.
A most wonderful effect. I think
?drunkenness has decreased 50 to 75
per cent.
6. To what extent has the sale of li
quor and drinking been reduced? Ans,
No liquor is sold in the county except
occasionally by parties who open up
blind tigers and they arc soon caught
ami dealt with. A considerable amount
of liquor is shipped in during the fall
and winter months. My opinion is that
the entire sale from all sources has de
creased lit) to 76 per cent, and possibly
mere and the drinking reduced in the
isamc proportion.
Yours very truly,
J. E. JEFFRIES,
Clerk Cherokee County.

The Farmers' Union Sun, Columbia, S. C.
Is a weekly newspaper published In
the interest of the Farmers' Union in I
South Carolina. The Executive Com-1
mitteo the early part of the year saw]
that the Union, in order to do efficient!
and lasting work, must have a paper, j
There must be a means of regular and
cheap communication, and the paper is
the best medium for that. Looking at
it in that way, the Executive Commit
tee and the President and Secretary
TreaBurer authorized Brother S. Frank
Parrott, of Gaffney, an experienced
newspaper man, to organize a company
for publishing a weekly paper. Before
the company was organized, however,
the Farmers' Cotton Union News, pub
lished at Greenville, S. C, came into
the possession of the Union and Brother
Parrott was appointed editor and au- j
thorized to take the paper to its present
headquarters and change its name to
that of the Farmers' Union Sun. The
price of the paper is only $1.00 a year,
easily within the reach of all. Every
member is urged to subscribe to it and
keep up with the Union happenings.

Calomel For Pear Blight.
Dr. W. H. Dial, of this city, made
an experiment about ten years ago that
is worthy of notice by fruit growers.
The matter was brought to mind last
Wednesday by the discussion at the
Farmen*' Institute of blight on pear
and apple trees. Dr. Dial had in his
yard a fine Leconto pear tree affected
seriously with blight which he had al
most given up as lost. However, he
tried this method of destroying the j
blight: About a foot from the ground
was cut a cross slit in the bark, which
was folded hack, about 20 grains of
calomel put in the cut and the hark re
placed. Today the pear tree is one of
the finest and most prolific to lie found
anywhere. Dr. Dial had three of the
pears from this tree on exhibition at
the Peoples Loan and Exchange Bank
Thursday.

Every farmer in Laurens county
shouldhavo hoard the speakers at the
Institute Wednesday. The lectures
were instructive.

Sonic Fine Millet.
Mr. IL L. Senn, a young farmer of

It had grown to a height of feel 1"
