Farm and Fireside. h - A Rabbits in Australia. In 1852 two rabbits were imported into Australia from England. These arrivals in that continent now number billions and are a great pest. Five rab bits eat as much grass as one sheep. From 1878 to 1888 the Australian gov t*>'nmont paid out $5,888,015 as bounty for the noxious animals at the rate of 25 cents each, and from 1883 to 1880 $2,200,000 for the same purpose. For some years the rabbits died by millions owing to the drought, but since 1904, with the rainy seasons increasing, they have again come into notice and bid fair to become as great pests as in the past. ? ? * A I.aureus county housekeeper has has sent the following excellent recipes which appear in the Farmers' Union Sun: TOMATOES, CORN AND OKKA CANNED TOGETHER, (lather all your vegetables in the morning and can the same day; they keep better when fresh. Scald, peel and cut all hard places from the toma toes, then measure four quarts; add to these tablespoon salt, but no water. Cook for half an hour. Cut corn from the cob, measure two quarts, add to this one pint boiling water and salt to taste. Cook for one hour. Use only tender okra; cut in small pieces, meas ure two quarts, add to this one pint boiling water and salt to taste. Cook for half hour or just barely doXe, then put all together, tomatoes, corn and okra, and cook for 20 minutes. Use quart jars and have them ready, tops, rubbers and cans in hot water; fill the cans brimming full and run a knife to the bottom to let out all air bubbles. St rew tops very tight and set the cans upside down to see if they leak. If any should leak they will not keep. When entirely cold wrap old newspa pers around each jar and put away in a dark place. I seldom lose a jar when di reel ions are carefully followed. TO CAN BEANS. Gather fresh in the morning, string and break in short lengths. Measure one gallon and put into enough boiling water to cover them well; boil fast for one hour, then add to this a level table spoonful salycilic acid (the powder, not liquid). Cook 20 minutes longer. Then proceed with hot cans as in above recipe. TOMATO CHUTNEY. To four quarts peeled tomatoes add tablespoon level full of salt, one pint vinegar, one-half teacup sugar, three pods red pepper cut in small bits, and si.\ good size onions sliced. Add mixed spices to taste and cook for 30 minutes. Can as above directed. * ? ? The Ten Commandments. At. an early period it was found nec essary to evolve from the mass of ethi cal teaching a few general rules for living called "The Ten Command ments," by which a man could be moral without, going through a course in the ology. Just so in order to instruct the average f irmer how to successfully conduct his farm operations so as to secure ,: greater net gain from the farm it is necessary to first deduce from the mass of agricultural teach ings a few general rules of procedure. They are called "The Ten Command ments of Agriculture," by the practice of which a man may be a good farmer in any State without being a graduate from a college of agriculture. Tili; TEN COMMANDMENTS OF AGRICUL TURE 10. (1) Prepare a deep and thoroughly pulverized seed bed, well drained; break in the fall to the depth of 8, 10 or 12 inches, according to the soil, with im plements that will not bring the subsoil to the surface; (the foregoing depths should be reached gradually.) (2) Use seed of the best variety, in telligently selected and carefully stored. ('.]) In cultivated crops give the rows and the plants in the rows a space Buitcd to the plant, the soil and the cli mate. ( I) Use intensive tillage during the growing period of the crops. (5) Secure a high content of humus in the soil by the use of legumes, barn yard manure, farm refuse and commer cial fertilizers. (<>) Carry out a systematic crop rota lion with a winter cover crop on south ern farms. (7) Accomplish more work in a day by using more horse power and better implements. (8) Increase the farm stock to the extent of utilizing all the waste pro ducts and idle lands of the farm. (!t) Produce all the food required for the men and animals on the farm. Following is an interesting letter to the Farmers' Union Sun from a Lau rena county girl: Dear Headers: I feel like 1 want to write and tell the boys and girls how I am spending my vacation. I have been enjoying myself helping mamma and learning how to cook, sew and do all kinds of house work. We have had plenty of fruit and I have been real busy lately canning, preserving and drying it for the winter. How many of you boys and girls have flowers to work with? I always find that one of my most pleasant duties. I have read sev eral good books since school was out. I read a while in the afternoons after most of my work for the day has been finished. I haven't been anywhere on a visit this summer, but I am looking forward to a pleasant trip to the coun try and several other places. I love to visit the country, for you always get to go on picnics and other all-day excur sions of pleasure, and you can always feel sure of a hearty welcome from every one. Well, I won't write a long letter this time, but if this one is ac ceptable I will write again soon and 1 hope to have a pleasant trip to tell you about. Wishing all a happy vacation. Palmetto Drug Co. Peonage Case Dismissed. M. B. Poole, one of the largest land owners in Laurens county, was given a preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner Atkinson on the charge of peonage, which resulted in the case being dismissed. The charge was brought by a colored man named Press Law, who worked for Mr. Poole. There was no evidence to sustain the charge and the ease was dismissed. This is the first case of this character that has been investigated in this sec tion for some time. ? Spartanburg Jour nal. Sold by Palmetto I)rug<'o. Improvements at ChJcora College. The interior of the dormitory, the parlors, halls and recitation rooms of Chicora College arc undergoing much improvement. A number of carpenters have been at work on the different rooms for several days ami the building will present quite an attractive appear ance on the interior when the work is completed. The floor of the entrance hall has been raised on a level with the parlor doors, the back ball separated from the front and the walls beautifully calci mined. Last summer a large addition was made to a part of the building and this additional room was soon taken up. This summer the prospects are much brighter for a larger attendance than last year. Applications from new pu pils are being received daily and the number of applicants at present ex needs anything in the past at the same date. Last year tin- college had an at tendance of two hundred anil eight but the number for the coining session will exceed this by far. The trustees recently purchased that piece of property facing Pcndlcton street. Heretofore the college has been cramped for room but Ibis lot will give them ample space.
