SONS OF VETERANS UliOED TO ORGANIZE An Appeal to (lie Sons uf Confederate Veterans. To the Sons (if Confederate Veterans. Comrades: At a meeting of a special committee appointed by the South Car olina Division United Sons of Confed erate Veterans, which was held in Co lumbia June 3rd, the undersigned were appointed a sub-committee to prepare an address to those in South Carolina who have the right to join the organiza tion known as "United Sons of Confed erate Veterans." All male persons are eligible to mem bership in this order who are them selves of good moral charscter and who are the direct descendants of men who were regularly enrolled in the army or the navy of the Confederate Stales of America, and who were killed or died in the service or were honorably disc barged therefrom or who served to the end of the war. It seems that it should not be neces sary to urge upon one whose ancestors had a pari in the glorious record for courage, endurance and patriotic devo tion to duty made by the soldiers and sailors of the Confederacy, the duty to join an organization designed t erpel uate the story of their heroic de? and to preserve for the future histon. the information upon which shall be predi cated a truthful history of the motives which led them to war and of their con duct in tin' prosecution of that war. The Society of Cincinnati, the Sons of the Revolution,- the Aztec Club and similar organizations are designed to perpetuate the memory of those wdio served their country in the cause of freedom and the maintenance of the honor and integrity of the government. Membership in these organisations has come to ho a badge of honor much sought after by those entitled to it. The day will come, aye! it. has already come, when to be known as a son of a Confederate veteran is a distinction which brings (he proud blood to the cheeks of him who may claim it. As tho years go by and the world knows more and more of the marvelous his tory of the greatest armies that ever fought under any banner this distinc tion becomes more and more honorable. Is it not, (hen, a simple duty of those who inherit the fame of the Confed erate soldier to take all necessary steps lo perpetuate that fame and to do honor to his name'.' It has been determined to organize a central camp to be known as Camp South Carolina, United Sons of Confed erate Veterans, so that those who live in communities where no local camps are established may join this general camp. Indeed, anyone may join it. It is desired that there shall be a grand revival of interest in this order and that at the re-union which is to be held in Greenville August 8th, there shall be a great gathering of IIa? Sons of Vet erans. To this end wo earnestly urge the organization of local camps and the reorganization of those which have been allowed to fall into a condition of disorganization. If it bo impossible to organize or reorganize these camps then let all Sons of Veterans join the central camp, Camp South Carolina, but above .;ll l"t there be a great out pouring of the Sons of Veterans at Groenvillo whether they be members of any camp or not. Comrades, shall he call in vain? Shall we appeal in vain to your pride of ancestry'.' To the veneration for your forefathers? To your admiration lor courage, fortitude and devotion to duty? Are you unmindful of the won derful heritage of honor and glory which is yours, and are you unmindful of the sublimity of the duty which de volves upon you to perpetuate the fame of those who won this undying honor We do not believe it. ,Vo have faith that the spirit which nade your sires illustrious as patriotic soldiers, as he roes, burns and lives in your breasts and will manifest Itself in the determi nation to do the duty Which lies before you. Washington, July 13.- A Laurens man conducted a revival in Washing ton some weeks ago which attracted considerable attention at that time and the results of which are still talked ubout. He was Dr. Lewis Murphy Roper, pastor of the First Baptist church in Spartanburg, but a native of Laurens and a graduate of Furman University. Dr. Roper conducted a meeting in the Fifth Baptist church in Washington, which ranks considerably above the First in influence. The pas tor of the church is very fond of Dr. Roper, with whom he became acquainted while the latter was pursuing a course of study here in the Columbian Univer sity, which has now become the George Washington University. Mr. J. J. Darlington, the leader of the Wash ington bar, is also a great friend of Dr. Roper, and is a member of the Fifth Baptist church. Mr. Darlington is a graduate of Erskine College and has been for a number of years regarded as the foremost lawyer of the nation's capital. The members of the church at which Dr. Roper preached twice a day for several weeks are anxious that he re turn in the future and give them the benefit again of his superior power as a revivalist and evangelist. Culbertson and wife spent the 4th at their old home near Ekom. Misses Omega and Tennie Madden are visiting their aunt, Mrs. Memus Hudgens, at Edgefield. Miss Juanita Martin has returned from a pleasant visit to relatives at Clinton. Mrs. M. T. Allison and Master Ryan Martin are spending this week with Mr. John Brown's family. The International Congress on Tuber culosis, which is to be held in Washing ton Sept. 21st to Oct. 12th, meets every three years, and this is the first time it has come to this country. The last meeting was held in Paris, France, in 1905, and three years before that the gathering took place in London. It is not likely that the congress will con vene in the United States for a great many years as the honor of entertain ing it is eagerly sought by the countries abroad.
