NEGRO KILLED SATURDAY NIGHT.
Albert Boyd, Alleged Murderer of Sam
Clcaton, Lodged In Jail.
According to eye-witnesses who testi
fied at the coroner's inquest, Sam Clca
ton, colored, was shot and killed late
Saturday night by Albert Boyd, also
colored. The shooting took place at a
negro party on the premises of Mr. W.
N. Austin, five miles from the city.
It appears that a row was begun be
tween Boyd and several other negroes
in which Boyd was worsted. Getting
away from his assailants Boyd is said
to have gone to his home a mile or so
distant and returned with his gun. He
was evidently bent on spilling blood.
Encountering a party of the merry
makers in the yard, some of whom had
been in the general mix-up earlier in
the night, Boyd is alleged to have lev
eled his gun on Cleaton. Gleaton plead
for his life, and another negro ran in
between the two before Boyd could or
did fire. The third party, however, was
ordered to get out of the way or take
the consequences, whereupon Boyd fired
and Cleaton fell dead, with a ghastly
wound in the chest. Not satisfied with
this, Boyd then fell upon his victim
with the stock of his gun, breaking the
fire arm over the prostrate form of
Cleaton.
Sunday afternoon Coroner Watts held
the inquest and issued a warrant for
the apprehension of Boyd. Meantime
Deputy Sheriff Sullivan and Special
Constable Owens were on the trail of
the accused, whom they found about 3
o'clock in the morning, asleep in the
woods, near Mr. Carl Fuller's. Ho was
aroused by the approach of the officers,
but offered no resistance. He was
brought to jail. Boyd claims that he
did not shoot Cleaton. He shows evi
dences of the fight and ia suffering
from hia injuries.

feature of the afternoon, the game
proving most interesting. In addition

visitors?Mrs. Willard, of Ware Shoals;
Mrs, C. F. Rankin, Misses Eva Brown
lee, Willie Gray Harris, Strickle'* and
Janie Colvin?were included in the

Beware of Ointments for Catarrh That
Contain Mercury,
as mercury will surely destroy the
sense of smell and completely derange
the whole system when entering it
through the mucous surfaces. Such ar

prescriptions from reputable physicians,

to the good you can possibly derive
from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manu

Necklaces
The Manufacturing Jew
eler declares that artistic
novelties for the neck are as
much in favor this season as
they were last spring and
summer, and there seems to
be a perfect craze just now
for necklaces and styles that
match gowns with which
they are worn.
One style that is popular
is a slender necklace of gold
with pendant of colored
stones.
The most popular stone
used is the pear-shaped sec
tion of pearl or drops of
mother-of-pearl as this does
not conflict with the color of
the dress worn.
We carry a full line of the
latest styles.
