"I know something about the ups and downs of the mail rider," observed Mr. Jesse V. Fuller the other day. "I tried it one winter," he continued. ' 'In the days of the old star route and no railroads to speak of in this section I rode the mail from Ninety-Six to York via Laurens, Tylers vi lie. Cross Keys, Union, making one trip a week. Rode horseback. Had a good horse, too, one of the best saddlers I ever saw. He was well trained and knew every stop as well as I did, better, too, on the first trip, for I had never been over part of the route before and he carried me to each office, some which were reached late at night. Had to ford Enoree river and on one occasion I made my horse swim it after waiting over a night for it to run down. In the win ter, too, remember." When a citizen takes his hands and teams and repairs the public road for a mile or so without presenting a bill to the County Supervisor he deserves hearty commendation. Of course, in an instance of this kind of which we know about the public did not receive all the benefit. But when one unsel fishly helps himself it usually results in common good. "This is a great country," com mented a local banker the other day on the fact that the ginneries of the city were running in full blast during a por tion of tho second week in March. What about a city clock, Mr. Mayor and members of council? There is a city ordinance against reckless or careless driving, bicycling and automobiling. It is not often vio lated but any tendency in this direction should be effectually checked. The Traynham Guards are busy pre paring for the annual inspection which will take place on April 3d. Dispensary Auditor West, who re cently thoroughly examined the Lau rens dispensary records, has written Secretary Nash, of the board of con trol, a very complimentary letter on che manner in which the affairs of the local dispensary are conducted. There seems to be an impression nbroad that a local organization of the Anti-Saloon League of America was formed at the First Methodist church Sunday before last when Dr. Hare, representing the American League, de livered two addresses on the subject of exterminating the sale of strong drink and appealed to the people for their aid in carrying on the work just launched in South Carolina. A State League >as been organized, but so far no county or subordinate organizations have been effected. The month of March, so far, has been very propitious for garden and farm Wv^rk. Resisting a blue-coat in Laurens is mighty poor business. Years ago the late Rev. W. W. Jones, the aged Methodist minister who died last week at Waterloo, was located on what is now the Laurens cir cuit and resided with his family at Clinton. Mr. R. O. II airs ton was one of Mr. Jones' members. Speak ing of the deceased the other day Mr. Hairs ton paid a line tribute to his powers as a preacher, worker and or ganizer. He preached for a period of forty nine years. During that time he prob ably served on twenty-five different circuits and stations of the South Caro . lina Methodist Conference. A few years ago, by reason of his advanced years and faithful services, the Rev. W. W. Jones was superannuated. Then he bought a little home at Waterloo, to which he carried his aged wife and spent the rest of his days quietly with comfortable surroundings. After his death, which occurred on the 7th inst., the fact was revealed that Mr. Jones had left a comfortable fortune in cold cash which he kept in his house. This treasure, which consisted of $1,800 in $20 gold pieces and some currency, was brought to Laurens by relatives and deposited in one of the banks. It is said that Mr. Jones prncticed the strictest economy throughout his long career and his savings doubtless run back to the war period. Union Meeting. The Second and Third Sections of the Lavrens Association will meet in union meeting with the Rabun Creek church on Friday before the fifth Sunday in March. Every church in said sections is urged to elect delegates who will at tend. An adjourned congregational meet ing was held at the Pint Presbyterian church Sunday, immediately after the regular morning services, for the pur pose of concluding the election of new deacons, Mr. E. P. Minter having been chosen at the first meeting a week be fore. On Sunday last Messrs. L. B. Blackwell and R. Fleming Jones were elected. The new deacons will be in stalled later. JUDOE BUCHANAN DEAD. Result of Shot Received While on Train to Augusta. Columbia, March 17. ? Ex-Circuit | Judge O. W. Buchanan, of this State, died in an Augusta hospital today, as the result of being shot in a Pullman, while a passenger between here and Augusta yesterday.
