PROHIBITION BILL
KILLED IN HOUSE
By a Vole of Sixly-Two to Fifty-One.
Mr, Nash's Prohibition Meabure
is Rejected.
Columbia, January 30.?The Nash
bill to provide for State prohibition was
killed by the House today, the vote be
ing 62 to 61. The friends of the bill
had been strongly in hopes of its pas
sage, and the vote was expected to be
close.
During the progress of the debate
nn the bill a delegation of W. C T. U.
members appeared in the gallery and
took seats. They had open hymn books
in their hands, and it was evident that
they were prepared to sing hymns at
the psychological moment. The atten
tion of Mr. Nash was called to their
presence, and at his request the Rev.
A. W. Brunson, of the Main Street M.
E. Church, of Columbia, went to the
gallery and suggested that it would be
better not to make any demonstration.
Meanwhile, Speaker Whaley had in
structed the sergeant-at-arms to
strictly enforce the rules and suppress
any demonstration at once. The ladies,
however, acceded to the suggestion of
the prohibitionists on the floor, and
there was no expression whatever.

Many Sleepless Nights, Owing to a Per?
sistent Cough. Relief Found at Last.
"For several winters past my wife
has been troubled with a most persist
ent and disagreeable cough, which in
variably extended over a period of SOV
oral weeks and caused her many sleep
less nights," writes Will J. Hayner,
editor of The Bulletin, Hurley, Colo.
"Various remedies were tried each
year, with no beneficial results. In
November last the cough again put in
an appearance and my wife, acting on j
the suggestion of a friend, purchased a
bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
The result, was indeed marvelous. Af
ter three doses the cough entirely dis
appeared, and has not manifested itself
since. For sab; by Laurens Drug Co.
Lumber ami Cordwood.
MR. Ed*.roi>.: ? Several people having
timber to put into cordwood or lumber
have wanted to know which would pay
best. Now, a solid cord of one-inch
lumber would make exactly 1,5:50 feet
of lumber. In sawing inch stuff about
one-half goes into slabs and sawdust,
and the bark is not included in this loss.
So we have used two solid cords of
timber, and if these had been split into
cordwood, with the bark and air spaces
added, we would have four cords of
timber used in making 1,5110 feet of
lumber. Then a fair cordwood price
for lumber should be enough that 1,630
feet should pay for four cords of wood
and the amount paid for sawing it. To
get at it easy, say three cords of wood
and half the saw-bill should be the
cordwood price for lumber. At four
dollars per cord for wood and four dol
lars per thousand for sawing lumber,
the cordwood price for lumber would be
two dollars added to twelve dollars, the
price of three cords?that is, fourteen
dollars per thousand. Small timber, at
this figure would pay some better in
cordwood. Inch stuff at live dollars a
thousand feet is about as cheap as cord
wood at four dollars per cord for your
stove. THOS. M. WORKMAN.

Columbia, February 6.?The annual
meeting of the South Carolina division

The election of officer* resulted as fol

A weak stomach means weak stom
ach nerves always. And this is also
true of the heart and kidnevs. It is a
pity that sick ones continue to drug
the stomach or stimulate the heart and
kidneys. The weak nerves, not the or
gans themselves, need this help. This
explains why Dr. Shoop's Restorative
has and is promptly helping so many
sick ones. It goes direct to the causes
of these diseases. Test this vital truth
and see. Palmetto Drug Co.
