Chemists say that more or less of the alum powder in unchanged alum or alum salts remains in the food. PROHIBITION BILL KILLED IN HOUSE By a Vole of Sixly-Two to Fifty-One. Mr, Nash's Prohibition Meabure is Rejected. Columbia, January 30.?The Nash bill to provide for State prohibition was killed by the House today, the vote be ing 62 to 61. The friends of the bill had been strongly in hopes of its pas sage, and the vote was expected to be close. During the progress of the debate nn the bill a delegation of W. C T. U. members appeared in the gallery and took seats. They had open hymn books in their hands, and it was evident that they were prepared to sing hymns at the psychological moment. The atten tion of Mr. Nash was called to their presence, and at his request the Rev. A. W. Brunson, of the Main Street M. E. Church, of Columbia, went to the gallery and suggested that it would be better not to make any demonstration. Meanwhile, Speaker Whaley had in structed the sergeant-at-arms to strictly enforce the rules and suppress any demonstration at once. The ladies, however, acceded to the suggestion of the prohibitionists on the floor, and there was no expression whatever. THB VOTE. The vote on the motion to strike out the enacting words were as follows, the ayes being opposed to the Nash prohi bition bill and the nays in favor of it: Ayes ? Annual Meeting of Stockholders and the Election of Officers. The second meeting of the stockhold ers of the Bank of Ware Shoals took place on the 30th of January, pursuant to the by-laws of the bank. The bank had been in operation just 11 months, and the cashier, J. C. Gambrell, made a report that was exceedingly gratify ing to all the stockholders. The following directors were elected Tor the ensuing year: Benj. D. Riegel and E. W. Sparks, New York; Jas. F. _MacEnroe, Ware Shoals; T. J. Bea cham, Rileys; J. E. Knight, Honen Path; J. C. Martin and W. C. Cobb, Ware Shoals. I* Subsequently the directors met and elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Benj. D. Riegel, presi dent; das. F. MacEnroe, vice-president; J. C. Miss 10steile Ramagc and Mr. John Willis Abrams were married at 7:HO last Thursday evening at the home of the bride's father, Mr. Albert Ramage. Rev. E. C. Watson, of Laurens, per formed the marriage ceremony, after which an elegant wedding supper was served. Several people having timber to put into cordwood or lumber have wanted to know which would pay best. Now, a solid cord of one-inch lumber would make exactly 1,5:50 feet of lumber. In sawing inch stuff about one-half goes into slabs and sawdust, and the bark is not included in this loss. So we have used two solid cords of timber, and if these had been split into cordwood, with the bark and air spaces added, we would have four cords of timber used in making 1,5110 feet of lumber. Then a fair cordwood price for lumber should be enough that 1,630 feet should pay for four cords of wood and the amount paid for sawing it. To get at it easy, say three cords of wood and half the saw-bill should be the cordwood price for lumber. At four dollars per cord for wood and four dol lars per thousand for sawing lumber, the cordwood price for lumber would be two dollars added to twelve dollars, the price of three cords?that is, fourteen dollars per thousand. Small timber, at this figure would pay some better in cordwood. Inch stuff at live dollars a thousand feet is about as cheap as cord wood at four dollars per cord for your stove. THOS. M. WORKMAN. Columbia, February 6.?The annual meeting of the South Carolina division of the Southern Cotton Association was held yesterday. There was a large at tendance from all sections of the State, and much enthusiasm w.n manifested. The election of officer* resulted as fol lows : E. D. Smith, president. E. L. Archer, vice president. F. H. Hyatt, secretary and treasu rer. Members of the national executive committee: E. L. Archer, of [Spartan burg, and J. W. McCown, of Florence. Finance committee: E. M. William son, Wade Stackhouse, J. E. Wanna maker, J. M. Moss. The executive committee will be ad pointed now by President Smith. Hon. F. II. Weston, who has served so ac ceptably as secretary, declined re-elec tion on account of ill-health, and high tribute to his excellent service was paid by President Smith and Mr. Wil liamson. It was decided to combine the oflicc of secretary and treasurer, and Mr. Hyatt was requested to accept the new position. As delegates to the Dallas convention the following were elected: Archer, Smith and J. M. Kenard. f??At the Dallas convention, on the 18th, Mr. Smith will resign as national organizer. A resolution was adopted calling for a reduction of 25 per cent, in acreage this year, in order to meet the reduc tion of cotton purchases by manufac turers. A resolution calling for a simi lar reduction in fertilizers was also adopted. A resolution endorsing the plan of cotton warehouses was adopted, the resolution calls on local banks to assist in this effort. The repeal of the lien law was also by resolution endorsed. Dan iel Whalen died Sunday night last at the home of Jas. Medlock, his brother in-law. Whalen came over to America from Ireland when a sixteen-year-old boy. He served eighteen years in the United States army as a regular and traveled over all the States of the Union, save two. He went through the War Between the States, and was discharged from the service at Laurens court house. He located in this county and was twice married, his first wife being a Miss Terry and his second, who survives, was a Miss Lollis. He was eighty-seven years old, and for a long time had received a monthly pension from the government. W. D. S. Reason Enthroned. Because meats are so tasty they are consumed in great excess.
