CROSS HILL NEWS LETTER. Wreck on the Seaboard Road-.-Several Business Changes. Cross Hill, January 13.?There was a wreck on the Seaboard road, just below this place, last Thursday evening. Some freight cars jumped the track, and one car loaded with cotton seed is a total loss. The road was cleared and trains I were able to pass by 9 o'clock Friday. No one was injured. Mrs. Matilda Colcman suffered a stroke of paralysis last Wednesday and has been seriously ill since. She is some better today. Dr. Miller will leave for Columbia to day to be on hand at the opening of the session of the Legislature. Mr. Louis Hanna has accepted a po sition with Dr. Miller, at the drug store. Mr. John Lona will be with Mr. C. D. Nance this year. Rev. Mr. HollingswoJth will preach at the Presbytciran church Sunday next. Mr. L. F. McSwain and family are visiting his mother, Mrs. Jane Mc Swain. He has been in poor health for some.weeks, and will have to take a good long rest from his work to recu perate. D. 1908, to wit: For Foot Peddlers, Ten Dollars. For Peddlers traveling in one horse1 wagon. Forty Dollars. Peddlers in two horse wagon, Sixty Dollars. For Vendors of Stoves or Ranges, for ! the first wagon, Sixty Dollars; and for each additional wagon. Forty Dollars. Vendors of Clocks, Fifty Dollars tor the first wagon and Thirty Dollars for | each additional wagon. Vendors of Lightning Rods for the | first wagon, Twenty Dollars, and for each additional wagon, Ten Dollars Peddlers of Spectacles on foot, Ten Dollars; same with team, Fifteen Dol lars. For peddling Sewing Machines for the first wagon, Fifty Dollars; and for each additional wagon Thirty Dollars. Duncan, the Methodist minister at Rock Hill, had performed 25 marriage ceremonies this year, and this was re ferred to as a record breaker. The writer of the paragraph is evi dently not familiar with the widespread popularity of Rev. A. A. James, the Presbyterian minister who resides at Pacolet. Mr. James informs the Progress that he has made eighty hearts heat as one; in other words, to solve this seemingly impossible mathematical problem, ho united in marriage forty couples during the year 1907. During his long service as a minister he has married moro than 030 couples, and, in mentioning this fact recently said that he then "had two more on deck." ?Union Progress. Preparations aro making for the sec ond trial of Mrs. Ethel Blair, the hand seme North Carolina woman who shot her husband to death in their home on ' Marion street a year ago. The case comes up for another trial at the term of the Court of Sessions convening here February 17. The jury in the former trial brought in a verdict of manslaugh ter, but she was granted a new trial by Judge George Johnstone on the ground that the jury was kept over night in a hotel in separate rooms. Mrs. Blair se cured bail in $2,000 shortly after s'.io was granted a new trial, and before that she had been appointed executrix of her husband's; estate, but so far has been unable to collect on a policy of in surance held by her husband in the Metropolitan.
