One of the most beautiful entertain ments of the holiday season was the reception given Friday afternoon by Misses Grace Simmons and Zaline Gray at the home of Miss Simmons in honor of Miss Tew of Columbia and Miss Na bora of Spartanburg. The reception rooms were lovely with mistletoe, holly and Christmas bells and idled with happy and beautiful girls af forded a scene of rare beauty and fes tivity. The guests wore greeted at the door by Miss Louise Simmons, in the recep tion hall by Miss Annie Gilkcrson, in the parlor by the hostesses, guests of honor and Miss Pauline Anderson, Mrs. Willie Anderson invited the guests into the dining room, where a delicious menu was served by Misses Susie Gray, Ethel Simmons and Marguerite Tolbert. In the hall Miss Charlotte McGowan poured coffee. Christmas favors from a Christmas tree laden with pretty things were distributed by Santa Claus. Tlio marriage of Miss Emms La'/.olle Anderson and Mr. Oscar Carroll Beam, of Covington, Ca., will lake placo this morning at 9 o'clock, .-it tho home of Mr. and Mrs. I.. A. McCord, South Harper street. 'The vvcddihg march will bo rend red by Misse? Leila and Mae Dell Rarrc, and tho ceremony will be performed by Rev. \V. E. Barre, uncle of the biido. The bouse has been very attractively decorated for the occasion in white and given, with pink carnations. Mrs. McCord will be the matron of honor, and will wear a white silk and cloth costume and, carrying pin': carnations, will enter first, followed by flic bride and groom, who will take their positions under the white bell for the ceremony. immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Beam will leave for Clinton, thence to Atlanta and other points. They will reside at Covington, Gft. A Tiling Plant. Mr. C. II. Mayhew was in the city a fow days ago, prospecting for a new location for his "hexagonal tiling" plant. Mr. Mayhew came to I.aureus at the suggestion of Mr. .1. N, Hudgons, who is always on tlx.' lookout for some thing to advance the interests of his home city. The tiles which Mr. Mayhew manu factures are especially designed for sidewalk paving, but, are suitable for heavy (loot's as well. He is now en gaged in putting down a job al Seneca, and it is, his purpose to then come to Laurens, if sulliceint properly holders will agroo to use his product to warrant the move. Wilkcs, was badly burnod yesterday afternoon, while playing at burning grass on the plot of ground around the Prresbyter ian church. Fortunately, Col. H. V. Simpson and a Mr. Williams, from the country, were passing at the time and rushed to put out the flames. Mr. Wil liams was thoughtful enough to imme diately pull off his coat and throw it around the child. The child's mother was attracted by Its cries and was on the scene almost immediately, and both she and Col. Simpson had their hand:, severely burned, as did Mr. Williams. It is thought and hoped that the child is net seriously injured. Pretty Home Wedding. On Dee, 26th, at 4.30 p. ri., at the olegant home of Mr. T. .1. Weathers, one of Laurena' most prosperous and successful farmers, Mr. Cnesley Eugene Rowland was married to Miss Mittie Leafo Weathers, Rev. E. C. Watson officiating, After the marriage elegant and elaborate refreshments were served in the old hospitable country stylo. The marriage party consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar L, Blakely, Mrs. Sam Compton, Mr, M. A. Summorol, Mr. Theodore Summered, Misses Ola Rlake ly, Nannie Rowland, Lillie May Bailey, Rosa Lee Railoy, Messrs. Earnest and Rush Rowland. On the 27th the party at tended a bountiful reception at Mrs. Rowland's, the mother of the groom. A QUEST. Special Teachers' Examination. The State Board of Education has ar ranged to hold a Special Teachers' Ex amination at Laurens Court. House on the third Friday in January, 1008, which is the 17th day of the month. Miss Ida Taylor entertained at a "Tacky Parly" last Thursday evening which was one of the most delightful affairs of < brist mas week. L. Teague. Mr. W. F. Milam spent Sunday in Waterloo. The Woodmen banquet Thursday night was one of the most enjoyab e evonts of the Christmas holidays. The local camp extended an invitation to the whole town and everybody turned out in full force. Fun, frolic, jokes and music made the evening one grand, sweet song. County Superintendent of Education Nash, Auditor Power and Col. J. IL Wharton, all enthusiastic choppers, made appropriate addresses on woodcraft. A magnificent banquet supper was served during the evening. Rev. Jas. Ii. Thornwcll Dead. Rev. Jas. H. Thornwcll, D. I)., died at his home at Fort Mill at 4 o'clock the morning of December 30th. His death was caused by neuralgia of the heart and was entirely unexpected. Dr. Thornwcll was a distinguished Pres? byterian divine and very prominently identified with Pylhianism, Mnsonry and other fraternal orders. For the past eight years he has been Grand Keeper of Records and Seals of the Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and was also Grand Secretary of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of South Carolina. He was a Con federate veteran, having served the Confederacy as quite a young man. SI00 Reward, $100. Cole visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Sanders, recently. Christmas at Cross Hill. Cross Hill, Dec. 30. ? Christmas thus far has passed quietly here. Many vis itors in town. All our boys and girls who have been away at school and col lego are at home, and happiness and good cheer prevail. Mr. J. C. Austin formerly of this place but now of Vidalia, Ca., was married to Miss Pearl Meadows of that place on the lKth, inst., and ho and his bride are visiting relatives here. Mr. Frank Owens of Landrum was married to Miss Adaline Smaulay on the lHth, and they are hero visiting Mr. A. D. Owens, father of the groom. Prof. II. Z. Nabers and family arc here visiting the family of Mr. R. A. Austin. Our merchants arc taking stock and preparing for another ycars's business. Collections have been good and all will begin the New Year hopofully. About 3,500 bales of cotton have been sold here up to this time, against 3,900 bales last season. Mr. W. W. Lowe, a Confederate vet eran, is quite ill at his homo near town. The new school building is not quite ready, so the old building will be used for a few week longer.
