LOCAL AND PERSONAL MENTION.
Mr. John P. Davis and Mrs. H. P.
Holeombe, of Clinton, were in the city
during the past week.
Mrs. A. R. Sullivan went to Green
ville Saturday afternoon to attend the
funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Way.
Rev. E. C. Watson has returned from
Rock Hill where he preached on Sun
day at the First Baptist Church.
Mr. J. F. Dobson, of York vi He, at
tending the city schools, entering the
tenth grade. He is a brother to Supt.
R. A. Dobson.
Mrs. E. M. Cunningham and Miss
Lena Cunningham have returned from
a three week's visit to relatives near
Walnut Grove, Ala., being accompa
nied by Mr. J. L. Harris who will spend
a few weeks in Laurens and vicinity.
In a little while every community will
be reporting the achievements of its
cotton pickers, but Mr. T. B. Childress
is, so far as known in this office, the
champion fodder puller hereabouts. In
three days and a naif he pulled, "took
up" and hauled up 800 bundles.
Rev. W. B. McCuen and family of
Honea Path, spent Sunday in the city
with the family of Mr. W. L. Taylor.
Having accepted the pastorate of Black
Creek Baptist church, Darlington Coun
ty, Mr. McCuen leaves the first of
October for his new field.
Laurens leads in the number of High
Schools to be established under the
new school law. The applications from
Laurens, Cross Hill and Mountville
have been approved, while that from
Renno is pending. Fountain Inn, lo
cated almost on the line, also gets
one.

BURIAL OF AIR. ROPER.
Funeral Exercises Were Held nt Rabun
Creek Church Last Wednesday.
The funeral and burial services of
Mr. L. Rutherford Roper, whose death
occurred in this city last Tuesday, took
place on the following day at noon at
Rabun Creek Church. Hilly five hun
dred people were present, a large num
ber going from the city.
The Church service was conducted
by Rev. E. C. Watson, pastor. In his
remarks he referred very feelingly to
the friendship that existed between
himself and the deceased, paying a
beautiful tribute to him as a true friend,
officer and soldier.
At the conclusion of this service the
casket was borne to the cemetery
where the Woodmen of the World took
charge, conducting the burial according
to the ritual of that Order in a very
impressive manner, with Messrs. C. A.
Power, R. W. Nash and .I. VV. Kellett,
officiating. The active pall bearers
were Chief W. S. Hagwell, M. II.
Stone, .1. T. Langston, W. II. Jernigan,
and Henry Dodson of the Laurens po
lice force, and Chief S. C. Reid of
Clinton. The honorary pall bearers
were seven members of the Traynhnm
Guards, J. Arthur Taylor, Marion Wil
kes, Erskine T. Babb, J. Cope Hender
son, Jeff Armstrong, f). R. Simpson
and Luther Bragg.
He Was Highly Esteemed.
Throughout the illness of the late
Mr. L. Rutherford Roper anxious In
quiries were made daily as to his con
dition and when his death was announc
ed there was a general expression of
sorrow and regret. He had the esteem
and regard of everybody and was looked
upon as one of the best officers the
city has had in a number of years. He
was next in authority to Cheif Bagwell
an/l this officer has expressed profound
and sincere regret in the less of such a
valuable man. In fact all the men on
the force feel the loss keenly and his
memory will ever be rcverrcd by them.
And the same may be said of Mayor
Babb and each of the aldermen in whose
confidence and esteem the deceased
held a high place.
