Troubles of an Ice Man.
Not long ago in one of the semi-trop
ical climates the writer happened to be
spending the month of June. The
weather was fearfully hot and the
>'iotel in which ho found lodging was a
very well kept hostelry indeed, in a
small city of 7,000 souls. On one occa
sion during his stay it happened that
the city's supply of ice ran short and
there was no indication of any imme
diate relief. The ice plant was tem
porarily out of commission and it was
too late to get any from a distance by
freight. The local dealer was in a
quandary and his patrons were cla
morous. The writer happened to have
been at the place long enough to get
pretty well acquainted with the dealer
and said to him, "Why do you not wire
h and have 1,000 pounds or so come by
* -express, to tide. you over until to
? morrow?" The dealer showed by his
reply that he was not in a pleasant frame
of mind, for we had given him no cause
for anything but a civil answer. He
said, "Tide over the devil; you know
nothing about the ice business. The
best thing you can do if ice runs short
is to turn your delivery horses into the
pasture and hide yourself. You can't
keep down a row with your customers
when the odds aro all in your favor

for ice that you cannot deliver. A
satisfied customer in the ice business is
a rare individual and I have yet to find
the man who has made any money by
handling it. One of the peculiar things
about the ico business is the fact that
overweight is received as a matter of
course and ono pound underweight,
valued at lcs3 than one-half cent, is
kicked about most strennously. They
want it cut to fit the refrigerator and
want no little piece to make up short
weight; they want the wagon to come
on schedule time and want the driver
to take the ice to the cellar and bury it
in the saw dust. Strange, too, that
these same cust omers would never com
plain if their grocer sent them one-half
pound short weight in a piece of bacon
worth 10 cents the pound, or 1 pound
short in a bushel of meal worth 90 cents
the bushel or 2 cents the pound.
"They will pay the same price for a
poor chicken as for a well fed one, and
the price of a hen is 40 cents, whether
it weighs 3 pounds or 6 pounds. No,
the kicks come mostly *rom the house
keepers and are about as unreasonable
f\s possible.
"1 sometimes wish that I had never
seen a block of ico, and yet on occa
sions like this, it takes about two cock
tails and a mint julep to bring me
around and it takes ice to bring that to
perfection. May be that is why the
customers are so troublesome."?Ex

Base Ball tor Laurens.
Laurons has had one solid week of
baso ball. Monday, Tuesday and Wed
nesday afternoons were taken up with
games between the home team and the
Spartanburg Y. M. C. A. team. Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday afternoons
witnessed the tug of war between Lau
rens and Ninety Six. In tho first series
the odd game was won by Laurens and
in tho second by Ninety Six.
Our ball reporter was away and did
not sec the games but our information
is that they were all poor. Bum. We
confess that we would not know a good
game from a poor one. There was a
lot of hitting, and throwing of the
^#flalls; n deal of running and hallooing
1 >nnd from our viewpoint that would be
.the best game. Wo don't know what
Tw;is the matter but thoro was evidently
a lack of interest in the games and the
tendanceurather slim.

Ladies and Society Make It a Success
Historical Notes.
Mr. Editor: A most delightful bar
becue was served at Lisbon on last
Saturday, August 3rd., by the "Ladies
Aid Society of that church. Congress
J. T. Johnson and ex-Senator C. R.
Wallace had been invited to address
the people but as they failed to appear,
the committee on invitations called on
F. P. McGowan, John F. Bolt and
Judge Thompson who made impromptu
addresses. According to the statement
of the speakers on that occasion, Lis
bon appears to be a historic place in
Laurens county. It took its name from
Lisbon, the port in Portugal, from
which many of the settlers of this com
rvAinity sailed when they left the old
'world to seek their homes in America
such as the Simpsons, the Wrights,
Nickolses and other. The grand-father
of Gen. Geo. P. McClellan of the fed
eral army, once lived in this community
and emmigrated from this place about
seventy-five years ago for Illinois.
Dr. Nickols some fifty years ago
brought to this place and county, the
first spriggs of Bermuda grast in his
saddle-bags from Georgia. The grand
father of Ben Jones brought to this
place, the seed of the cedar tree from
Virginia. Where do you see such Ber
muda grass and such cedar trees as you
see near Lisbon. The speakers paid
a fitting tribute to the founders and
pillars of Lisbon Church.
Rev. Z. L. Holmes the first pastor,
Dr. William Wright. Capt. Edward
T. Presley and Mr. Rodger Q. Brown
were the first settlers. A high compli
ment was' paid to the ladies who are
always first and foremost in every
good word and work, in the home, in
society and in the church, and her influ
ence is always potent for good.
The place is also noted in a political
sense. It was here that a democratic
club first suggested the names of the
leaders after the democratic campaign
of 1876. Wade Hampton and W. D.
Simpson for Governor and Lieutenant
Governor.
It was here that the doctrines of labor
reform and and anti-cotton crop, as
advocated by the Rev. A. W. Moore
first took organized form and was put in
practical oporation. One of the speak
ers said that he had been told that he
could not speak on religious subjects,
but that he thought he could as all
things great, noble and good are the
fruit of pure religious sentiment?that
religion is the source of all things good.
It was a delightful occasion. Thanks
are returned to the public for their
large attendance and liberal patro
nage'.
Premium Squash.
Miss Jane Starns, Matron of the
County Home, brought the premium
squash of the season to the Advertiser
office Saturday. It was of the potato
variety but very unique in shape, re
sembling a huge bull's horn. The
Bquah was sufficient for the dinner of
everybody connected with this office.
