THE EXALTATION OF BARNES.
The President of tho United States
is not ex-ofticio the dispenser of Car
negie hero medals, and that is why
Benjamin F. Barnes, his assistant pri
vate secretary, has received no decora
tion in recognition of his exploit in di
recting the forcible expulsion of Mrs.
Minor Morris from the portals of the
White House, Washington.
But the President has done what he
could. The postmastership of Washing
ton is the reward which the President
announces ? though he does not de
scribe it as a reward?the valor and
dexterity of Mr. Barnes as an ejector
has won. Mr. Barnes is to succeed Mr.
John A. Merritt through the Presi
dent's nomination.
No serious defence of Mr. Barnes's
participation in tho Mrs. Morris inci
dent has been proposed. As sanctity
attaches to railroad rebating when it
has been indulged by a member of "my
Cabinet," so is a member of the Roose
velt household charged with counten
ancing the ruffianly treatment of a wo
man ipso facto a martyr who must not
be compelled to wait for a heavenly
crown.
We would not affirm that this Barnes
was guilty of the brutality of which
Senator Tillman accused him on the
floor of the Senate, accompanying his
charge with the tender of abundant
proof. It is possible that Barnes has
a complete defence?of which the pub
lic has been kept in ignorance. The
President exalts him and so instructs
the American people to return a verdict
of not guilty. The orders are explicit
and positive, but it is not certain that
they will be obeyed. An unpleasant
impression of Mr. Barnes is pretty
sure to linger and such gratification as
he felt on account of his promotion,
proceeds from the reflection that his
removal is for the improvement of
manners and "the good of the service"
at the White House.

NEWBERRY.
In a little town about 31 miles South
East of Laurens seven or eleven hand
some buildings to be used for stores
and offices arc under construction. There
is a College in the town which has sev
eral new buildings and numbers of new
residences have been built lately or are
nearly finished. Some of the residences
arc among the handsomest in upper
South Carolina. Notable among them
is that of Mr. L. W. Floyd, who is
well known in Laurens. Another is
that of the Hon. H. H. Evans, a former
mayor of Laurens as well as of New
berry.
Newbcrry claims a population of
7,000 but the town appears bigger.
We think we could give a class of a
dozen Newberryians valuable instruc
tion in the art of claiming.
Newbcrry is one of the most at
tractive and enterprising of Laurens'
outlying cities and of that group of
flourishing cities, Spartanburg, Green
ville, Union and Greenwood which form
the "men" in the "marble ring" of
which Laurens is the "king" or "mid
dleman" none is growing more rapidly
than Newbcrry.

Mr. P. II. Fike Resigns.
The following editorial notice ap
peared in the Spartanburg Herald
Thursday morning:
"Mr. P. H. Fike has resigned his
position as city editor of the Herald
and will be succeeded by Mr. John T.
Rhett, of Columbia, but more recently
of the Augusta, Ga., Herald.
"Mr. Fike retires from the city edi
torship of the II erald after serving the
paper in this capacity for eleven years.
Mr. Fike has a wide circle of friends in
Spartanburg city and county, and as a
jvjwspapci man his work has attracted
much attention. He knows news and
has tho 'instinct.' "

Veterans Urged to Attend the State
Reunion.
Greenville. April 9.?General order No.
16, reading as follows, has been issued,
directed to the Confederate veterans of j
the state. The order is singed by Maj. |
Gen. Thos. W. Carlisle, and Adjutant
Gen. J. M. Jordan.
1. The South Carolina Division U. C.
V. will meet in Columbia, at their an
nual re-union on the 16, 17 and 18 of
May, 1906. All veterans are earnestly
requested to attend,as this will probably
be the last time that many of us will
ever have the privilege of attending
again. Columbia, our beautiful capti
tal city, has invited you and she wants
you to come.
2. Commanders of all camps in the
state will call them together at once
and elect delegates to attend the re
union.
3. The commanding general regrets
to call attention to a large number of
camps that are still in arrears as to
dues, both to general headquarters and
also to division headquarters. Please
forward dues at once-any way not |
later than April 20. They are small
and must be paid.
4. All railroads will give the usual
fare.

The Rev. G. N. Painter, who has'
been a Missionary in China for more
than 30 years, is now in this country on
furlough, will speak at the First Pres-,
byterian Church here to-night at eight
o'clock. All are invited to hear him. j

Heifner, a young bricklayer of Staun
ton, Va., was held Tuesday afternoon
from his residence. With the excep
tion of his brother, Mr. Heifner had
probably the longest name of anyone in
this section, his full name being George
Kemper Young Eugenus Mathew Pilson
Wilson Shield Jefferson Davis Heifner.
It is saiil he has a brother whose name
is still longer.
Dr. Pell Was Re-elected.
Spartanburg, April 7.-Dr. R. P. Pell
was reeleeted president of Converse
college at the semi annual meeting of
the board of trustees held yesterday.
The trustees expressed themselves as
being entirely satisfied with the man
agement of the college.
The annual meeting will be held dur
ing the summer at which time the finan
cial affairs of college wilj be discuss
ed. Arrangements for making of ex
tensive improvements will also be dis
cussed at the annual meeting.

diver who was here last Christmas with

ried in Spartanburg a few days ago to

A Voice From Spartanburg.
A movement is on in Laurens County
to re-elect Probate Judge 0. G. Thomp
son? this time without opposition. Judge
Thompson has always been an ardent
Tillmanitc, but both factions seem to
have agreed that nobody shall run
against him this time. It is a nice coin
plimcnt to a worthy man, a capable of
ficer and a battle-scarred Confederate
veteran. To be unanimously returned
to avoid the perplexity and worry of a
canvass is nothing more than he de
serves and we hope the arrangement
will not be disturbed.?Spartanburg
