LAURENS, S. C, March 21, 1906.
A LAURENS CANDIDATE.
The Manning Times remarks:
"Col. J. E. Norment, private secre
tary to Governor Heyward, has an
nounced that he will be a candidate for
the offico of Secretary of State. Nor
ment is a fine fellow and has a host of
friends throughout the State, but there
is Elbert Aull, who is also suspected of
having aspirations for that office and
he too has a host of friends nmong
Norment's friends. The two will con
flict and it would be easier to arrive at
a choice if these two charming fellows
would get together and agree which
should do the secretary, and which
should be the chief clerk. Then the
friends could help both at one and the
same time."
They are fine gentlemen and more than
willing to surrender themselves wholly
to the service of the State but Laurens
County will poll about 3,301 votes
in the primary this year and these gen
tlemen will divide the odd vote with
McCown, also a candidate and, like Mr.
Norment, a state house employee,?
which Mr. Aull was during the-Mc
Sweeney administration. The remain
ing 3,300 votes, we hope and trust and
pray will go for Col. "Mit" P. Tribble
of Anderson, formerly of Laurens and
still proud of Laurens as Laurens is
proud of him.
By the way, Governor Hcyward, a
man of judgment, appointed Col. Trib
ble a year or two ago to complete the
Confederate rolls and he did the work
well. This old veteran entered the Con
federate army from Laurens and
fought tho four years?and it is telling
no tales out of school to say that he
continued to fight for a number of
years after Appomattox?because the
necessity for fighting did not cease in
Laurens until Wade Hampton had been
firmly placed in the governor's office.
First, because Col. Tribble made a
highly satisfactory clerk of court for
Anderson county, an excellent postmas
ter for Anderson city when Democratic
postmasters were in fashion, because
he is a competent man, and, second,
because there are few left in South
Carolina who so faithfully, so bravely
and honorably and at much cost saved
South Carolina, Laurens County is for
him?and let it be to a man!
It would give us genuine pleasure to
vote for our old college friend McCown
or for Norment and Aull, our newspaper
friends, but we are for Tribble, and we
believe that that solitary doubtful vote
in Laurens is weavering.
We have no second choice in this
race?there is going to be one primary.

WARE SHOALS.
The doubling of the capital of the
Ware Shoals Company, making it one
million dollars, means much for the
improvement of the region in the center
of which the property lies. A large
and thriving manufacturing town will
be built, an increasing market is pro
vided for the farmers in the neighbor
hood and all the inhabitants for miles
around will receive benefit in one way
or another. Indeed these benefits have
been enjoyed for several years but the
doubling of the capital means that
they are to be greatly multiplied.
Through long years of. difficulty Mr.
N. B. Dial and his associates clung to
this Ware Shords proposition and their
faiti. did not fail. Mr. W. R. Richey,
Congressman J. T. Johnson and Mr. J.
O. C. Fleming of the original syndi
cate perhaps others followed Mr.
Dial's leadership and held on through
good and evil times until northern cap
italists were convinced of the magnifi
cent value of the water power and in
vested largely in it. The fact that tho
Messrs Reigel own the controlling in
terest does not take from the credit to
which Mr. Dial and his Laurens friends
are entitled for it was the initiative
and their unwavering endeavors that
have resulted in the splendid develop
ment on tho Saluda. Moreover, one of
the Messrs Reigel has become or will
become a South Carolinian, so it re
mains also through his interest a home
interprise.
Mr. Dial and the gentlemen who
stood by him in the interprise until they
had built the dam and partially built
tho mill, for then the proposition spoke
for itself, have done a great work for
the industrial developement of this sec
tion and of this work Mr. Dial has per
sonally done the larger part.

DR. IRBY'S APPOINTMENT.
In appointing Dr. William C. Irby a
member of the State Reformatory
Board, the merits of a modest citizen
who has always been active in working
for his friends and who has asked noth
ing for himself, were recognized by the
governor.
Dr. Irby dc.erves the compliment?
few men who have done so much for
their neighbors have received so little
in return. Dr. Irby was a soldier and a
veteran long before he was a man in
age, and we have never known the time
when he was not ready to do a man's
part. His medical experience as well
as his experience in practical affairs
will be of great value to the Reforma
tory Board, and Governor Hey ward is to
be praised for enlisting him. When it
comes to public positions, which most
men seek, Dr. Irby must be conscripted.
He is more interested for his friends
than for himself.

INSURANCE.
Insure against over-production of
cotton. The way to insure is to pro
duco corn, peas, grain, other forage
crops, vegetables, pork, poultry and all
supplies. This is the the only insurance
against the possible disaster of low
priced cotton.
If you have a barn full and a crib full
and a smokehouse you will be able to
hold six cents cotton until it brings
twelve r?.-nis perhaps.
For a farmer, a smoke-house deposit
is better evon than a bank deposit.
ADVANTAGES OF A NEW COUNTY.
A new county would make more of
fices and more candidates. That would
make things a little more lively during
election years, but how is that to help
the tax payers? County officers have to
bo paid and the expenses of the adminis
tration of county affairs have to be met.
Increased exponses must mean increase
of taxes.
Why is it that newspaper* and politi
cians who supported Col. W. J. Tal
bert, who said in Edgefield last summer
that he had been a prohibitonist twenty
years and who opposes the dispensary,
are now so enthusiastic in advocating a
Dispensary candidate for Governor?
Col. William Jennings Bryan was,
has been and is twelve thousand miles
from "The Commoner," Washington
and tho Railroad Rate bill since Sena
tor Tillman was placed in charge of it
by Senator Aldrich and other friends of
the railroads. Col. Bryan went to Asia
months ago.

MEETING OF THE BRIARS.
Survivors ol Company G, 3rd S. C. V., to
Hold Reunion April 14th.
The Twentieth Annual Reunion of
this command will be held at tho Gray

For these nineteen years, no matter
how far behind with work, nor how
unfavorable the weather, we have not
failed to have a good meeting. We
will not fail this time. Old comrades

Don't fail to bring something to eat.
Veterans, let us answer to roll call on

It's a significant fact that the strong

of Port Williams, O., has learned how
to do this. She writes: "Three bottles

A clergyman was very fond of a par
ticular hot brand of pickles, and finding
great difficulty in procuring the same
sort at hotels when traveling always
carried a bottle with him. One day
when dining at a restaurant with his
pickles in front of him, a stranger sat
down at the same table, and, with an
American accent, presently asked the
minister to pass the pickles. The min
ister, who enjoyed the joke, politely
passed the bottle, and in a few min
utes had the satisfaction of seeing the
Yankee watering at the eyes and gasp
ing for breath.
"I guess," said the latter, "that you
are a pardon?"
"Yes, my friend, I am," replied the
minister.
"I suppose you preach?" asked the
Yankee.
"Yes, sir; I preach twice a week,
usually," said the minister.
"Do you ever preach about hell
fire?" inquired the Yankee.
"Yes; I sometimes consider it my
duty to remind my congregation of
eternal punishment," returned the
minister.
"I thought so," rejoined the Yan
kee, "but you arc the first of your
class I ever met who carried samples."

He was a Gentleman.
A few days ago I was passing through
a pretty, shady street where some boys
were playing at baseball. Among their
number was a little lame fellow, seem
ingly about twelve years old?a pale,
sickly-looking child, supported on two
crutches, and who evidently found much
difficulty in walking, even with such as
sistance.
The lame boy wished to join the
game; for he did not seem to see how
much his lameness would be in his own
way, and how much it would hinder the
progress of such an active sport as
baseball. His companions very good
naturedly tried to persuade him to
stand at one side und let another take
his place, and I was glad to notice that
none of them hinted that he would be
in the way, but that they all objected
for fear he would hurt himself.
"Why, Jimmy," said ore, "you can't
run, you know."
"Oh! hush, said another, the tallest
in the party. "Never mind; I'll run
for him," and he took his place by
Jimmy's side, prepared to act. "If
you were like him," he said to the
other boys, "you wouldn't want to be
told of it all the time."
As I passed on I thought to myself
that there was a true gentleman.

"Oh, I AM SO TIRED!"
Is board daily from old and young, rich and poor. Did you ever stop and considc
the cause of this remark? We will venture to say nine cases out of ten are
caused by improper digestion. This, or other symptoms of Indigestion such as
nervousness, nausea, heart-bum, sour stomach, flatulency and despondency,
should be a warning to you who are in danger of having indigestion, the great
est enemy of American health to-day, fasten its merciless fangs on your health.
Remember, "A Stitch in time saves nine", and a bottle of the celebrated
