He was -he guest, while in the city, of bis daughter, Mrs. John M. Clardy. CONDITION OF COTTON. Qovernment Shows 74.9 Against 77 Same Time 1904. Washington, August3.?The follow ing is the report on the condition of the cotton crop issued today: The crop estimating board of sta tistics of the Department of Agricul ture finds from the reports of corres pondents and agents of the bureau that the average condition of cotton to July 25 was 74.9, compared with 77 on July 25 last year, 91.6 on July 25, 1904 ; 79.7 on July 25, 1903 and a ten-year average of 86.2. By States the averages are: Texas, 71; Georgia, 82; Alabama, 79; Mississippi, 69; South Carolina, 79; Arkansas, 69; Louisiana, 66; North Carolina, 80; Indian Territory, 82; Ten nessee, 80; Oklahoma, 83; Florida, 85; Missouri, 85, Virginia, 87. 'Squire Bailes of York. "You cannot down a working man," is as old as the hills but as true as an cient. Prof. William O. Bailes, the South Carolina 'squire who does a land office business marr 'ing people, will not down. He keeps swimming with his head above water. He boasts that he has united more than 40 couples since he had the round with the officials in Columbia. His latest cards read: "I marry 365 people a year, and want to double it. 'Squire Bailes, the greatest marrying man the south ever knew, York county, South Carolina; nearest postoffice, Pineville, N. C. "(Over.) "CaP. upon and visit the home of 'Squire W. O. Mr. Jesse Wood was in town from Brewerton Friday. Mr. Jamie Watkins of New Holland, Ga., is visiting relatives in the city. Miss Laia May Dial was the guest of friends in Greenwood during the past week. Rev. William R. Minter and family of Shelby, N. C, visited Capt. John R. Minter during the past week. Misses Maggie Bullington and Annie Parks, of Woodruff, were the guests of the Misses Dorroh the past week. Mr. T. E. Boyce, of Clinton, a valued friend of The Advertiser, gave us a pleasant call Thursday. Mr. J. O. C. Fleming and family went to Wrightsville Beach, N. C, Thursday for a months stay. Miss Lois Estes, daughter of Rev. B. P. Estes is visiting in Greenville and Anderson. Mr. John R. Gray of Youngs visited relatives in the city during the past week. Rev. and Mrs. A. N. Brunson of Manning are visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Jones. Dr. Chas. A. Ellett spent last Thurs day at Fountain Inn, as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. W. Davis. Rev. C. L. McKain conducted a very successful protracted meeting at Sandy Springs during the past week. Rev. Ray. Anderson, assisted by Rev. George Hodges, is conducting a pro tracted meeting at Brewerton this week. Mr. R. C. Davenfj.-t of Augusta, who is spending a portion of his sum mer vacation at Cross Hill, was in the city Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. P. Moore are spending a month in Virginia, with their daughter, Mrs. D. G. Ruckman, of Staunton. Rev. C. L. McKain pastor of the second Methodist Church is at Prosper ity this week assisting Rev. J. K. Mc Kain in a meeting. Mr. B. L. Jones of Newberry passed through the city Wednesday on his way to the mountains for a few weeks va ""ticn. Mrs. W. C. Irby, Jr., and her sister Miss Annie Stevenson, of Jacksonville, Ala., left Thursday for a fortnight's stay on Pawley's Island. Lawyers Patterson of Greenville, Park of Greenwood and Baxter of Au gusta were in attendance upon the Civil Court for a day or so last week. Miss Louise Folk, the beautiful little daughter of Col. John F. Folk of Bam berg, visited the family of the Rev. M. W. Hook the past week. Mrs. Wistar Wright and. Miss Lucile Wright of Montgomery, Ala., arrived in the city Thursday and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Childre3s. Rev. E. C. Watson pastor, was ably assisted by the Rev. J. R. Aiken of Spartanburg in a very interesting re vival meeting held at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church during the past week. Misses Louise Gray of Gray Court and Laurie Harris of Youngs, spent last week at Lisbon with the family of Mr. J. N. Wright. Mr. E. B. Machen has returned from a months stay in Baltimore where he went for medical treatment at the Uni versity of Maryland. His friends will be very glad to know that he derived much benefit from the treatment. Mr. William Lancaster, stenographer and private secretary to President N. B. Dial of the Enterprise Bank, is spending his vacation at Glenn's and White Stone Springs, Mr. J. T. McDill and sister. Miss Eliza McDill left Saturday to visit rela tives and friends in Abbeville and An derson counties. Mr. McDill expects to attend the Farmers' Institute at Clem son. The Gainesville Eagle of July 27th notes the total divorcement in Hall Su perior Court of Georgia of Mrs. Pearle Hughes from Zeb Hughes. Mrs. Hughes is a daughter of Mr. Dock Moore and resides at Watts Mills. You are cordially invited to attend our exhibit any day this week. Come and have a cup of coffee and hot bis cuits if you intend to buy or not. Rebuilding. Rebuilding will begin on Davis Roper & Co.'a new front this week. This will not Interfere with their Rebuilding Sale as they have arranged with the contrac tors to protect the side walk and en trance to the store so that customers can trade as usual. He is Now at the Head of a Preparatory School in North Carolina. The catalogue number of The West minster Presbyterian of Wildemere, N. C, just issued by Rev. W. K. Minter and Rev. R. C. Morrison, editors and managers, is devoted primarily to the interest and upbuilding of Westminster School, a preparatory school for boys and girls which was established three years ago by the Presbyterian churches of three counties. The trustees announce in this number the election of the Rev. William R. Minter as principal of the school, to gether with a strong corps of assist ants, including Mrs. W. R. Minter, who will be the matron. Rev. Mr. Minter, who is a son of Capt. J. R. Minter of this city, has been preaching at Rutherfordton and Shelby for the past five or six years and he has been instrumental in con tributing in a very large measure to the successful establishment and rapid growth of this institution. A feature of the next session wnich opens September 12, will be a course of lectures by eminent educators and practical business men, one of whom will be Mr. J. E. I.aureus Negro in Panama Prison. William L. Hemphill, writing from Panama July 22d, has the following item: "I visited one of the old Spanish dungeons yesterday and in looking over the prisoners I discovered a fellow countryman, John Henry Wells (col ored) from Laurens. He has been in a month, is the only American in the jail and is accused of murder. He seemed to be in good spirits-said they treated him pretty badly and didn't give him much to eat. He is in the same cell with two Frenchmen, two Irishmen, two or three natives and a number of Jamaican negroes."?Abbe ville Medium. Fraud Exposed.
