Vance spent Monday af ternoon in Newberry. Dr. Carlisle L. Nottingham, of Vir ginia, visited in the city this week. Mr. G. W. Cunningham was in town Monday from Maddens. Mr. C. C. Featherstone spent the Fourth in Anderson. Mr. W. R. Cheek was in the city Monday from Gray Court. Roy Little spent the Fourth in the "City by the Sea." Mr. J. R. Little and family are camping at Stomp Springs. Messrs. F. F., T. E. and C. L. Mc Donald and John L. Balcntine have re turned from a visit to Knoxulle, Tcnn. Mr. Emory Machen went to Balti more Monday for treatment in one of the hospitals of that city. Mr. J. W. Eichelberger has returned from Hot Springs, apparently much im proved in health. Mrs. E. W. Kennedy of Spartanburg has been on a visit to her father, Dr. J. M. McCarley in the city. Former Congressman Stanyarne Wil son was in the city professionally a day or two last week. Miss Mazie Little, stenographer at M. S. Bailey & Sons, Clinton, is spend ing her vacation with her parents in the city. Mrs. Ben Franklin of Cokesbury vis ited her brothers, Messrs. G. P. and F. M. Smith from Friday until Mon day. Mr. DeWitt Norwood has returned to the city from an extended visit in Greensboro and other points in North Carolina. Mr. J. E. Johnson of Lanford was elected Treasurer of the State Rural Carriers' Association at the annual meeting Monday in Columbia. According to information sent out in advance there were 200 fatalities in this country yesterday incident to the celebration of the day. Col. J. H. Wharton, Chairman of the State Railroad Commission, together with the other members of the Board, attended a meeting Monday night of the Greenville Board of Trade. Tues day the Colonel was "at home," ming ling with the big crowd in attendance upon the Fourth of July celebration in the Mountain City. Mr. T. D. Darlington has been ap pointed manager of the sales depart ment for Georgia and Western South Carolina of Edmond Morthr.er & Co. sole importers of Genuine Puruvian Guano. The Trinity Sunday School enjoyed a most delightful picnic yesterday at the home of Dr. A. C. Fuller, the beloved and faithful Superintendent of the School. The Glorious Fourth. All places of business were closed yesterday in honor of the day we ccle baate. Quite a number spent the day at Harris Springs, others went out on fishing expeditions, while others went to Greenville, Woodruff, Enoree, Clin ton and other surrounding towns. Cotton Climbs Higher. The government's monthly report showing the cotton crop's condition at 77, caused the price of the staple to advance over 100 points Monday. There is no improvement in the con dition since last month and the indica tions are that the crop will not exceed 10,000,000 bales. New York sjx>ts are quoted at 10.80. Individual Communion Cups. The [First Baptist Church of Green ville has adopted the use of the indiv idual communion cup in observing the I ord's Supper. The matter wa*6 taken into advisement some time ago and t he deacons recommended the change. Bonaparte has succeeded Paul Morton as Secretary of the Navy. John D. Rockefeller has given ten million dollars as an endowment for higher education in the United States. Sparlanburg's mayor-elect is an un dertaker, but he has a mighty live town on his hands. John F. Floyd was elected mayor of Spartanburg in a second primary last Tuesday, defeating O. L. Johnson. The annual meeting of the State Press Association will be held at White Stone Springs next week, be ginning on Tuesday. The first bale of the new cotton crop was sold in Galveston, Texas, at auc tion for HO cents per pound. OLINTOJT WEDDING BRILLIANT EVENT Entertaining Description of the Marriage of Miss Sallie Hampton Copeland and Mr. Win. Beaty Farr. Clinton, July 3rd. -The marriage of Miss Sallie Hampton Copeland and Mr. William Beatty Farr. which took place on the evening of June 27th at the Presbyterian Church, was a beautiful event, witnessed by a large gathering of relatives and friends. The artistic decorations of ferns and palms made an attractive background for the wedding group. Suspended in the arch were the white hells, which Miss Amy Cope land rang in perfect time to the wed ding march, rendered by Mrs. E. W. Ferguson. First entered the garland girls,Pearle Hays, Clayte Bailey, Mary Owens, Essie Bell Hunter, Julia Owens and Frances Copeland, dressed in white, with sashes of green ribbons. The bridesmaids and groomsmen were Misses Allen Leake, Sadie Philson, Belle Farr, Ellene McCaslan, Addie Horton and Lida Carey, Messrs. R. C. Philson, J. C. Copeland, W. W. Boyd, W. D. Copeland, E. W. Stone and Ii. J. Copeland who were grouped on the rais ed platform in a half circle. To announce the bride's coming were two dainty lit tle flower girls, Mary Owens and Helen Bailey. The matron of honor, Mrs. J. [, Copeland, wore soft white mull, with girdle of violet ribbons. Awaiting them was the groom and his brother, Mr. Robert Farr.Thc Flower Song was softly played during the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. W. P. Jacobs. The bride's gown was of white crepe de chine, with trimmings of lace medal ions and shirrings. She carried a shower bouquet of bride roses. The brides maids wore dresses of soft white silk, with girdles of green and carried pink roses and ferns. An elegant reception was held immediately after the mar riage at Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Copeland's, where were, displayed the lovely gifts given to this popular couple. Out-of town guests were Miss Farr of At lanta, Misses Lee and Carey of Ander son, Miss Bond of Baltimore, Mr. Jeter of Carlisle, Mr. J. C Copeland of Un ion, Mr. Robert Farr of Hamlet, N. C. and Mr. R. E. Copeland of Laurens. Mrs. Joe Vance and Miss Ina Vance leave today on a two months trip to Arkansas. Mrs. Geo. II. Ellis entertained on Friday afternoon in honor of her mother, Mrs. Roache of Augusta. Miss Sallie Taylor and Mr. Downs Bell were married on Sunday at the home of the bride's father, Dr. E. F. Taylor of Renno. Mr. and Mrs. Bell will be in Clinton after July the 8th. Miss Laura Vance leaves Wednesday to visit Miss Lyl Irby for two weeks. Miss Maggie Watt of Greenville is spending this week with relatives. The usual crowds will go to Enoree on the 4th and also to Stomp Springs. Mrs. W. M. McCaslan and Nancy Owens are visiting Mrs. Hazel Scaife at West Springs. Junior Order Has Election. Miss Lucia Barksdale, daughter of Mr. Downs Barksdale, of this city, has been elected teacher of the Trinity school for the next session which be gins October 16th. City and County Will Probably be Can vassed Pretty Thoroughly in Interest of the Petitions. The people of 1.aureus may soon have the opportunity of voting out tho dispensary. They will if the required nuuiber of qualified voters sign the pe titions now being circulated asking for for an election on the proposition under the provisions of the act known as tho Brice Bill. Two petitions were circulated in the city Monday and quite a number of signatures were secured. It is stated, however, that several parties declined to sign the petitions. The county will probably be thor oughly canvassed and practically every one may have the chance to place his name on the petitions. There aro about 8,600 voters in the county and iL will be necessaay for one-fourth or about 900 of the legal electors to sign the paper authorizing the county super visor to order the election. Signing the petition does not commit any one to vote for or against the dispensary. Sessions Court July 24th. The jury commissioners will draw two sets of jurors todav for the next term of Court which convenes Monday, July 24th. On account of a resolution of the County Bar Association there will be no jury drawn for the third week and if there are any jury civil cases tried it will be by consent during the second week. There is a large number of criminal I cases for trial and as Solicitor Cooper is very desirous of clearing the docket it is probable that the greater part of two weeks will be taken up with crimi nal business. The docket is an exceed ingly heavy one and the Court will prob ably be in session three weeks, the last week being taken up with equity bus iness. Judge J. C. Klugh of Abbeville will preside. Card Club Entertained. The members of the card club spent a delight fid afternoon at progressive euchre with Mrs. W. (). I'rentiss as hostess on Thursday afternoon. Mid summer meetings of the Club are not always well attended, but the mem bers were out in force at Mrs. Prentiss* pretty entertainment. Fancy post cards were used as score cards and a delightful course of refreshments served, consisting of devilled crabs, pea nut sandwiches, wafers and ice tea. Those present were: Mosdames T. D. Darlington, K. Fleming Jones, J. E. Clary, Dial Gray, W. II. Anderson, R. E. Babb, M. L. Copcland, W. II. Wash ington, W. D. Ferguson; Misses Tallu lah Caine, Lillian Irby, Alma Shell, Emmie Meng and Josephine McSwain of Decatur, Ca. Mrs. I'rentiss was as sisted in receiving by Miss Alma Shell. Cotton Fire in Dials. The cotton house of Messrs. Martin Woods an?l C. A. Babb, substantial farmers of Eden, Dials township, was set on fire by lightning Saturday night, during a terrific rain and electrical storm and completely destroyed, to gether with 11 bales of cotton and 100 bushels of cotton seed. The bolt struck a'noarby tree and extended to the building. The lire was discovered in time to save the wagons, buggies and farm im ptPifrents which were in sheds con nected with the cotton house, The loss is considerable with no in surance. W. 1..
