Ahead of (he World on Beating Time;
He Beats the Yankee Too.
Every year agents of some kind come
through the country with something to
sell to the negroes?books, medicine or
machines for making money -and this
year two nicely dressed young fellows,
with fine horsos and new buggies, came
through Statesburg selling watches,
nickel-plated and gold-plated, double
cased watches, costing from $10 to $20,
all on credit, secured by mortgages on
the household furniture and cooking
utensils of the purchaser, every old
skillet, fryingpan, saucepan, three
legged bench and bug-ridden bedstead
being put up to get a watch. One watch
that cost $11 stopped ticking in three
days after being bought and was pro
nounced by a jeweller to be worth
about one dollar and a half, and he said
it would cost more than that to fix it.
One man was asked the time and he
took out his double-case gold watch,
opened it, emptied the insides out in
his hand, shook them awhile, looked at
them and said he reckoned it was about
1 o'clock.
The negroes are getting about as
sharp as the agents, however, and
they are 'generally treating the whole
thing as a huge joke. Many of them
gave wrong names, others signing the
names of men who have been dead for
years. One man, who mortgaged a
gun, was afterwards asked where he
got a gun from. He laughed and said:
"I ain't buy it yet." It is said that
some of the negroes met the agents
several times at different places, and
each time gave a different name and
got another watch. The two agents,
who boasted to the negroes that they
were Yankees, and ever so much sharp
er and smarter than the people of this
State, so the negroes say, drove up to
a crowd of negroes and proceeded to
sell their wares. The negroes bought
them and signed the usual mortgage,
giving wrong names.
Before the crowd broke up one of
the negroes went off some distance and,
forgetting about the wrong names,
commenced to call aloud for "Pom
peyl Ohl Pompey!"
Pompey, who was still sitting up in
the crowd, turned from a deep black to
an ashy hue and muttered in an un
dertone: "Listen at dat d?m fool! I
would't answer 'im to save his life."
To the great surprise of the two
smart Yankees the crowd burst out
laughing and whooping. These two
Yanks will have a time gathering in
their furniture and cook pots next fall.

Morgan Iron Works. Spartanburg, was

Miss Julia Gilkerson, who has been
on a two weeks visit to Greenwood and
Ninety-Six, returned home Saturday.
Prof. T. 0. Burdette, who has been
teaching at Finger vi lie for the last two
sessions, spent a few days in the city
last week visiting his aunt, Mrs. Mag
gie Peterson.
On Saturday night, May 13th, there
was a heavy rains and a little hail in
the upper section of Laurens county,
along the Enoree River. The farm
lands were considerably washed by the
rain.

The Fortnight Sucial Club was wel
comed by Mrs. E. P. Minter at her at
tractive home on South Harper street
at four o'clock on last Tuesday after
noon. The hostess was assisted in re
ceiving by Miss Josephine Minter
Pretty Score Cards wore distributed
and the guests found their places at
tables in readiness for "Nations." A
spirited name followed and after the
game delightful refreshments. Frst
came a delicious course of ices, and
then coffee and wafers. The afternoon
was greatly enjoyed by the guests
who were Mesdames W. 11. Washing
ton, C. c. Featherstonc, M. L. Cope
land, W. 11. Anderson, W. P. Caine,
and Will Meng, Misses Annie Cilker
son, Willie Jones, Elizabeth Todd, Jose
