Sonic Questions.
The dissensions in the Board of Di
rectors of the Equitable Lifo Assur
ance Society, it is said, have been set
tled.
While the quarrel was in progress it
was disclosed that many thousands of
dollars of the Company's money were
spent for dinners. This is not denied.
Meanwhile, although there are evi
dences of extravagant and even profli
gate management, no one doubts the
solvency of the company. The policy
holders arc perfectly safe. The com
pany has enormous assets.
If the management of the Company
has been extravagant, has it not never
theless sold insurance at as low prices
as other companies?
If it has so sold insurance, could not
the Company have sold insurance lower
than other great companies, with econ
omical management?
If other great companies have sold
insurance at prices as high as the
Equitable and their management has
been sound and economical, why have
not their prices been lower? In the
cases of mutual companies, why have
not the policy holders received larger
dividends? As a matter of fact has
Equitable insurance cost more than that
of most other companies? We think not.
If, then, extravagance in the Equita
ble has been a fact how are the policy
holders of other companies to be con
soled,?knowing that they could have
done just as well in the Equitable?
How are policy holders in "old line"
companies generally to escape the con
clusion that they are paying extrava
gantly for insurance?
Can those of us who cannot afford
$100. the plate dinners at Sherry's af
ford Delimonico insurance?
We have never had great faith in
fraternal order insurance but we arc
being submerged with explanations of
how their low rates are possible.
What are we and you going to do
about it?

By Way of a Suggestion.
A great deal is being said and writ
ten these days about the "City Beauti
ful." The Advertiser has been asked
to suggest that something be done be
fore the 10th of May to beautify and
render less unkempt in appearance the
"City of the Dead. "
This could easily be accomplished by
private parties who have plots in the
City Cemetery, having their own
squares weeded out and put in order.
If a general response is made to this
suggestion the cemetery will wear a
greatly improved appearance.

Far be it from any one not an ex
pert to question the claim that the
more rapidly oysters are gathered the
more rapidly they multiply but it would
be interesting to know whether or not
persons engaged in packing oysters are
Christian scientists?

Naturally Col. Bryan and Tom John
son enjoyed their call on Mayor Dunne.
The sight of an unbeaten politician
must have been glad to their eyes.

Mayor Dunne greeted Col. Bryan as
"the idol of his party." Shattered?

In Memory of Lamb.
L. M. Speers of Newberry has been
awarded the contract for erecting a
monument in the cemetery at Laurens
to Wm. B. Lamb, the color-bearer of
the Third South Carolina Regiment in
the Civil War. The monument is to be
a marble shaft eight feet ten inches on
a suitable pedestal. On the monument
will be an engraving of the Confeder
ate battleflag and the following in
scription, "Sergeant W. B. Lamb,
Color Bearer of the Third South Caro
lina Regiment. Born Feb. 4, 1829.
Died May 10, 1901. Erected by the J.
B. Kershaw Chapter Daughters of the
Confederacy." Sergeant Lamb's fa
mous words to Gen. Kershaw at the
battle of Chickamauga will also be in
scribed on the monument- "Just tell
me where to go and I'll go there."
The occasion of these words was the
following: While the regiment was ad
vancing the color-bearer was moving a
little too much to tho right and was in
danger of causing the Third to overlap
the Seventh Regiment. Gen. Kershaw
called out to the color-bearer, "Bear to
the left, bear to the left," but in the
noise of battle the command was not
heard. Then the general rushed for
ward and took hold of the flagstaff to
turn the line toward tho left. Ser
geant Lamb grasped the staff and said,
"No, sirree. Just tell me where to go
and I'll go there; but no man gets this
flag as long as I am able to carry it."
