In pursuance of an order from Gover nor D. C. Heyward, and in conformity to a recent Act of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, providing for a special election for Solicitor for the Eighth Judicial Circuit, notice is hereby given that an election will be hold at the several precincts established by law in Laurens County, on Tuesday, April U.A. D. 1905, for a Solicitor for Eighth Judical Circuit. Polls at each voting place will be opened at seven o'clock a. m., and clos ed at four p. m. On the day of the Election the Mana gers must organize by electing a ('hair man, and also a Clerk, if necessary. The Chairman so elected is empowered to administer oaths to the other mana gers and Clerk, and to fill any vacancy if one exists from among the qualified voters who, after being sworn, can eon duct the election. At the close of the election the Mana gers must proceed publicly to count the ballots, and continue without adjourn ment until the -amc is completed, ami make a statemc.it of the result thereof, and sien the same. Within three days thereafter, the Chairman of the Hoard, or some one designated by the Hoard, must deliver to the Commissioners of State and County Election the poll lists, the boxes containing the ballots and signed state ments of the result of the election. One of the aboved-named Managers for each precinct must call upon the Hoard of Commissioners at the Court House, Salesday. April :?rd. Miss Willie Harris of (hay Court was tl?e guest last week of Mrs. W. L. Gray, The little folks of the first and third grades of the City Schools had a glo rious time on Friday afternoon, picnic* ing at Holmes Park. Miss Lillier Stevens, Helen Goggans, Hertha Wells anil Emmie Meng were in charge of the children and gave them a merry af ternoon. The ladies of the Wednesday Club were entertained by Mrs. W. II. An derson on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Anderson added a most enjoyable fea ture to the regular program by serv ing a dainty course of refresments. The election of a delegate to the State Federation of Clubs was disposed of at this meeting, Mrs. W. E. Lucas being the unanimous choice of the Club. DEATH OF JOHN ADAMS. A Former Resident of Laurens, and a (hillant Soldier of (lie 3rd Regiment. BEAUFORT, April 1. Mr. John s. Adams, a gallant Confederate Vete ran, who had been sick for some lime, died here Friday evening, aged 60 years. This simple announcement is as feelingly made as if d?.ath instead had invaded the mansion of an opulent or more pretentious citizen. He was a son of the late William Adams, who lived in Laurens County. His mother was a daughter of Mr. John Simmons, a highly respected citizen, who before the war was proprietor of the hotel at Laurens Court House, and her mother. I Elizabeth Vance, daughter of the late Sam'l Vance, of the same county, were all family connections of the deceased, who also has a brother, Mr. A. L. Ad ams in Greenville. Mr. Adams was a member of Com pany A., Capt. Hance'scompany of the 3rd South Carolina Volunteers, and was pronounced by bis colonel (Col. Nance) as one of the bravest men of his regi ment. At the battle of Eredericksburg, fought December, 1862, while charging the enemy, he was severely wounded, the ball entering his mouth, shattering the right jaw bone, and coming out of the bone, just behind the right ear, from which wound he lay for three months. He returned to his command after convalescence, but with perma nently impaired health, he never sufli cently recovered, and served to the end of the war with distinguished bravery Unfaltering courage, truth and sincer ity, were recognized and distinguishing traits of his character. .No one ever knew .John Adams to falsify, by word or deed, his honest convictions. He always wore conspicuously upon his breast his well-earned Confederate Veteran's badge. By a singular coincidence, while your correspondent knew that he was a mem ber of the gallant 3rd South Carolina I regiment, of his having been wounded and of his distinguished bravery throughout the war, he could not locate to which company he was attached, until the list of the killed an 1 wounded of the regiment in the battle of Ered ericksburg, as reported by Adjt. Y. J. Pope and published in the Columbia Guardian, December 25, 1865, reap peared in The Sunday News of last Sunday, while he lay speechless and un conscious. It will be a satisfaction to his sur viving comrades in arms to know that surrounded by some faithful friends the old man passed away peacefully, and his funeral obsequies will be at tended by Veteran comrades. A Dinner for the Veterans Planned. Joseph B. Kershaw chapter Daughters of the Confederacy, met on the after noon of the 28th, Wade Hampton's birth day with Mrs. J. D. Watts. Quite'a number of the "Daughters" were pres ent and the meeting proved unusually interesting. Mrs. It. H. Hell read a beautiful and carefully prepared paper on the life and deeds of General Hampton, which was greatly enjoyed. After the literary feature of the programme came a dis cussion of arrangements for Memorial Day. It will be recalled that last year at the eleventh hour it was decided to give a dinner to the veterans but so late was it when the affair was determined upon that many of the veterans were not notified. It is the earnest desire of the Chapter that every veteran in the coun ty be present this year. The dinner will be served on the lawn of the old Gnrlington residence on North Harper Street and Col. Armstrong will make his address in the afternoon from the piazza, which will servo as a rostrum. All of the "Daughters" of the Con federacy, whether enrolled as members of the ehaper or not will be given the opportunity to contribute to the lunch and the Chapter feels assured that it is an opportunity that will be gladly em braced. It is urged that*the different Camps, in the county send the names of their members who will probably attend, to Mrs. J. A. Copeland in order that the ladies may form an estimate of the prob able number of their guests. The Chapter is very anxious for the day to be pleasant for the veterans and will count trouble a small matter if the old soldiers are pleased. NEW CURE FOR CANCER.
