There is a gentleman living in the Western portion of this county, whose mules are cared for and they show it. If there is anything that a mule de lights to do it is to show his keep. Some times he does so at the expense of his best friend. Not long since this man's wife started to Laurens driving one of these 'peart' mules. Long before she reached [the city the mule spied a big white rock with "Davis, Roper & Co" painted on it and shied; a little further he spied a stump adorned in the same manner and cut the same dido; still further on he had the same experience with a bridge with like decorations. Ry this time the good lady was much worried with trying to keep the pam pered animal in the road, and rather warm with the exercise, as well as with her friends, Davis, Roper & Co. At this stage she drove up to the store of that well known firm and asked for a drink of water. The polite clerk made haste to fetch her a think that was cool and refreshing anil just as she was in the act of putting it to her lips behold there was Davis, Roper & Co. painted in the bottom. No! she exclaimed, there are on every tree, every rock, every stump and every bridge be tween here and home and 1 will die be fore I will drink off them. THEY NEVER FAIL. Shands of Clinton was the guest of Mrs. B. W. Ball for sev eral days last week. We are glad to note that "Uncle" John Copeland is up again. He went to Stomp Springs on Saturday. Rev. Henry Thomas is at Anderson tins week, attending the Greenville Convocation. Mrs. Josephine Watts and Mr. W. D. Watts of Denver, Colo., who is on a visit to Laurens, have been spending a few days at Kinards. Dr. R. E. Hughes has gone to Greensboro, N. C., for the meeting of the Tri-State Medical Association, in which he holds the ofiice of Secretary. Misi; Mary Miller, one of the most faithful of the graded schools corps of teachers was taken sick on Friday, but hopes to report for duty again in a few days. The Rev. Dr. W. G. Neville, Presi dent of the Presbyterian College at Clinton, will occupy the pulpit of the First Presbyterian Church here next Sunday morning and evening. Misses Hannah and Mamie Talbert entertained a number of their friends at a Colonial party on last Friday night. The young belles and beaux in costume enjoyed a delightful evening. We hear that a good many residences will be built this spring in different parts of the city. Messrs. Lake, Bobo and Christopher on West Main Street, Terry, Machen and others on South Harper and one or two more. What has become of the Committee ami the new, or at least enlarged, pas senger station? A flagman is now sta tioned at the crossing on East Main Street during the day and this is well, but we also need better and larger waiting rooms as well as protection from wintry winds and rains and July suns at the Union station by means of sheds there. Mr. W, F. Rice, who moved to High Point, N. C, about a year ago having decided to give up his position as Fore man-Finisher for the Furniture Factory to travel for a Chicago Varnish con cern, has returned with Iiis family to Laurens to live. A drummer's life, says Mr. Rice, is like Port Arthur was a few months ago?those who are with out are trying to got in ami those with in are trying to get out. President Smith Coming? E. D. Smiih, President of the South Carolina Cotton Growers Association has been invited to make an address at Laurens. The invitation will be ac cepted and as soon as the date is fixed notice will be given through the county papers. Ralph Bingham was tho best one man attraction that has been heard in Laurens for sometime. Mr. Bingham is u versatile genius and tho many things he does are all done well. De cidedly the most delightful part of tho program was the musical numbers.? His violin solos "Thc-Prayer-Cavaleria Rusticana," a selection from "II Tro toro" and a little gem of an encore charmed the audience. Mrs. Lucas as his accompanist is entitled to an equal division of the honors. Mr. Bingham considered himself fortunate in secur ing on no notico at all, so capable, truly ["sympathetic and competent an assistant. Mr. Bingham has a full powerful voice and his descriptive song "Shakespeare's Seven Ages" was also enjoyed. We must compliment this audience on their quiet attention. Tho coughing, restless, noisy ones were conspicuously absent. The late comers were perhaps too ill with the grip to get out. Of the readings the selection from Whitcomb Riley would perhaps receive a majority. The Negro Picnic at Louisville was nevertheless a close second, Having written ourselves down as one in love with Mr. Bingham there is just one criticism we would make and it is this: Let the audience do mere of the laughing. Mr. Bingham does not want to be considered 'a lecturer. He is an entertainer worthy of the title and having gained the sympathy of his audience can well afford to trust them. The contagiousness of laughter is well understood and its aid may have to be invoked by some less gifted than Mr. Bingham but in our opinion he not only does not need to invoke the aid of this human weakness?it even detracts af ter a time from the full enjoyment he would otherwise create.
