Jor>es was manager for Ohio, for the North-west ern Mutual Life. Uo now holds a very responsible position as secotd vice president and agency manager for the State Mu'ual Life and Annuity Asso ciation, of Rome, G*. This is the lead ing Southern life inmrar.ee company and enjoys the distinction of being the paront Annuity Association of the South' This company commenced business, Ootober 28th, 1898, and on Juno 30th, 1901, showed a surplus of $128,527.41. This company is now en tering its 7th year and from the day of its organization up to date, it has shown a steady gain, both In assets and surplus. It has passed the expert mental stage and Is an assured success. The report for 1904, whioh will soon be published, will show that it has accum ulated over a quarter of million in as sets and over $128,541 in surplus, which Is more by $50,000 than any of the other old-line companies had at the same age. For the last half century the people of the South have been pouring Into the coffers of the great insurance com panies of the North, millions of dollars, for the protection of their wives and children. This was alright, so ion? as there was no institution at home that offered the same protection, but the necessity of sending these millions to the North to further strengthen their power of centralizing and controlling the money values of the world, has creased. It is a Yankee trick, pure and simple, for the Agents of Life In surance Companies in the North to try and perpetuate the opinions that no Southern Life Insuranco Company is worthy of consideration. Not many years ago, Northern people told us that the Southern people could not build and successfully manage Cotton Mills.They claimed that we did rot have the experience and worst of all, that we did not have anything but negro labor with which to operate our mills. The late Capt. J. H. Montgomery, of Spa tanburg, built the original Pacole* Cottm Mill. At the cad of the first year, Capt. Montgomery declared a 10 per cent dividend. This startled our friends in tin North. They discovered that, the South was the place for the Cotton Mills and from Pacolet we have ..growa to be a great cotton manufactur ing section. It is now their cry that we must send our money North for our Life Insurance. What does this mean, when boiled down? Simply this, that Southerners are fools and cannot de velope their own section. There is ju?t as much reason for a Southern man to deposit his savings in a bank in Michi gan, in Indiana or in New York, in pre ference to a wpll established savings bank in bis city, as for him to take in surance in some life insurance ooin pany away from his own section, rather than in a well established Company at home.
