The first engagement of the
1904 Primary election was waged
at the polls yesterday from 8
o'clock a. m. to 4 p. in,
The second and probably the
final charge will take place Tues
day, September, 13.
^The dispensary and beer sa
loon were closed all day.
The vote in this Township was
unusually large and the returns
show that throughout the county
the vote is the fullest since the
Primary was adopted.
No disturbance of any kind
has been reported.
The weather was ideal and the
candidates and their ardent sup
porters were on the alert all day
long.
Returns from twenty-nine
boxes out of a total of thirty-two
precincts show that Cooper re
ceived 1,835 votes, Sease 1,126
and the election of McGowau
senator; Irby, Boyd and Miller to
the legislature; Bolt, clerk of
court; Nash superintendent of
education; Powers, auditor; Cope
land, treasurer; Duckett and
Peden lead for sheriff; Humbert
and Drummond for supervisor;
Hairston and Watts for coroner;
Roberts, Bailey, Deck and Babb
for county commissioners.
The three missing boxes will
not chauge the result of those
elected but .t may affect the re
lative position of some of the con
testants for sheriff, supervisor,
coroner and county commission
ers.
The blank spaces appearing
in the tabulated returns show
that no report was received.
Only nine boxes were reported
last night for State officers. Th ese
gave Cansler for railroad com
missioner, 361 ; Karle, 306 ;
Evans. 76 ; Garris, 290 ; Gignial
jiat, 69 ; Mobley, 227.

Woman's Missionary Society of
the Spartauburg District met
last Friday with the Methodist
Church at Gray Court and con
tinued until Sunday night, con
cluding; with a sermon by Rev.
R. S. .Truesdale, pastor of the
Green Street Methodist, Church,
Columbia.
The sessions of the meeting
were presided over by Mrs. A.
B. Mulligan of Spartauburg. who
is District President of the So
ciety.
Mrs. Mulligan reported the
progress that was being made in
mission work all along the line
as did Mrs. W. L,. Wait, Corres
ponding Secretary of the Dis
trict Society.
The missionary sermon was
preached Sunday morning at n
