Mr. lllackwell, as stated In The Advbrtisek a few weeks ago is a Clinton boy and has been at tbe head of Mr. Allan Nicholson's compos ing room and job department at Union for several years. The management of this papor is conildent that the busi ness men of the city will lind his work entirely satisfactory. Concerning R. F. D. Carriers. Post Master General Payne has is sued further instructions for the gov ernment of the rural carrier service in an order to go into effect July 1 next. A few extracts are herewith given: Carriers are forbidden to solicit ordere of any person or firm, but carriers may carry packages upon the request of the patrons of tho route whenever such service shall not interfere with their odicial duties. The hire for morohan diso carried on requost of the patrons of rural free delivery must be paid by the patron and not by the seller of such merchandise. All mailable articles must have post age paid on same. Articles or packages that arc not mailable which the patron desires tho rural carrier to carry must be delivered to him in person. Maila ble matter placed in the post-ofllce or a rural lettor box Is subjoct to tho regulations governing the mai'.-i,includ ing payment of postage. Carriers must not accept anything that will delay tho delivery of mail or interfere with the efficiency of the service. They are not allowed to leave their routes nor carry splrltouB liquors either for themselves or the accommcdation of patrons. Rural carriers are required to per mit post-ofllce inspcc'or?, or other duly accredited agents of the Post-Office Department, to accompany them on their regulsr trips over their routes. They must not carry other passengers nor permit any other than authorized postal officials to rido with them or to have access to the mails. SOME Y1EW8 A8 TO FUNERALS. Thoughtful Saggestions by an Intelli* gent Observer. Mr. Editor: With your permission I want to call the attention of our people to some reforms, I think much needed in funeral customs . Ordinarily the un dertaker is requested to have the hoar.--e at the home at a certain hour. If the driver should miss the hour by fifteen minutes, those in ohargo show much impat;ence and worry, and the same parties often keep the hearse waiting after the hour appointed, thir ty minutes or more. This needs reform. Funeral services are often conducted at a church and the procession goes to grave to find it unfinished, and a wait of thirty or forty minutes is often nec essary. This could be avoided and ought to be. After the undertaker is told that, "wo will have no service at the church, only a short service at tbe grave," he goes on to find the pastor with his hook service and is often kopt thirty minutes or more by long prayers a. d longer talks when the people are standing on the cold ground or in the hot sun. Much suffering and sickness often result from such a service. This needs reform. Often tho coffin is opened to tbe gaze of a curious congregation. This needs reform. Only in extraordinary cases do I think this ought to be allowed, and only for some near relatives to view the remains. Pall bearers are expected to help bury the dead. Often we see strong men stand and never offer to assist on such occasions and allow the Pall bearers to do most of the work. This is wrong and very thoughtless. In some towns it is customary for merchants to close their stores a few minutes while the funeral procession is passing. This is respectful and ought to be regarded on all occasions. These reforms ought to be practised for the benefit of the public generally, but more especially for the family in affliotion. w. T. A. Cross Hill. June II. '04. Hugh and Calboun Wallaco and Glenn Fuller,sub8tantlal citizens of Sbiloh section were In town Saturday. Mr. B. Ratledge Fuller, a young business mm of Mountville, was In the city Friday. Capt. E. G. Mitchell, of Mt. Bethel, presented Tue Advertiser with some magnificent specimens of his crop of Irish potatoes whilo in tho city last Friday. Misses Anna, Lucy and Minnie Hud gens, little daughters of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Hudgens of Greenville are visit ing their uncle, Mr. T. K. Hudgens. Mr. Laurens D. Pitts and bride have returned from St. Louis and are at home to their friends at Rev, J. D. Pitts' on Main street. Mr. E. B. 0. Watts, of Cheraw, who has been tho guest of his Uncle, Major W. A. Watts for the past two weeks, will leave the first of July for the Sum mer Law SchoOi of tho University of Virginia. Mr. W. A. Medlock of Marietta, Ga., was in the city Thursday, greeting his numerous friends and acquaintances. Accompanied by his wife, he is spend ing a week or so with his parents, Mr. and Mrs, W. F. Medlock at Merna. Mr. Chas. B, Brooks, a gallant veto* ran and staunch farmer, paid The Advertiser a pleasant call Friday. Mr. Brooks showed us a leather pocket book, which was bought and used by his father, Mr. Barney Brooks, 77 years ago. The book is well preserved and of course is a very highly prized family relic. A Hood Negro Dies. Henry Ramage, an industrious and respected negro, died in his field from heart failure last Wednesday morning. He owned a little farm, three miles be low the city. New Depot Agent. Mr. C. H. Gasque of Yemassee has been appointed depot agent for both the roads at ttm point. Mr. Gasque took charge of the office Thursday. For awhile he will be assisted by Mr. M. L. Crisp, who recantly resigned tbe agency. Death or Dayid Pollard. Mr. David L. Pollard, an aged and highly respectable citizen, died at tho Laurens Cotton Mills Sunday morning about 11 o'clock. He had boon in de clining health for a number of years. Barbecue July 21st. at Wares Shoals. On Thursday, July 21st., the day of the stockholders' meeting at Wares Shoals, there will be a big barbecue dinner served by the neighborhood. A large crowd and a pleasant day is anticipated. News from Manila. Manila, June, 17.?Miss Julia Tur nor has returned from the Groonville Female Oollege for the summer vaca tion. Little Jennie Clayton Goddard is spending sometime with her cousin, Miss Oertrudo Hill. Mr. Mesner Babb has beon down in specting the roads. Mr Jas. T. Hill was in your city Monday. Mr. Frank Holland has returned to Atlanta, Ga. Mrs Sue Smith of Vaujrhnsvllle is spending sometime with her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Koon. Messrs. Tax Levy Voted and Committee Ap pointed to Examine School Building. In pursuance to the call of the Secre tary of the Board of Trustees, a meet ing of the citizens was held in the Court House Friday morning for the purpose of making the annual tax levy for maintaining tho Laurens Graded Schools next session. Mr. P. A. Simpson was elected Chairman and Mr. C. A. Power, Secre tary. A report from the Seoretary and Treasurer of the Board, Mr. C. D. Bark8dalo was submitted, showing the roceipts and disbursements of the paat year. On motion Iho saine lovy as last year, 2} mills was voted for the next scholastic year. Superintendent Jones was present and at tho Invitation of the Chairman he gave some interesting information as to the work of the school?, the en rollment, etc. lie stated however, that in viow of the increased attend ance from yoar to year, the problem of properly seating all who may enter the school next session, was to his mind quito a serious question. A number of the rooms are wholly inadequate for present demands. Acting on this sug gestion a resolution was adopted by the meotiug whereby a committee con sisting of throe citizens was selected to make an investigation of the sohool building and roport to the Board of Trustees the practicability of making improvements or providing additional class room accommodation. This com mittee is as follows: A. L. Hudgens, J. O. C. Fleming and J. F. Bolt. Dr. C. J. Joseph T. Johnson is expected to be present to make a Masonic address. Miss Bertha Anderson is at home from Whitmires, where she has been teaching the past year. The following young ladies and gen tlemen are at home from College: Miss Lutie Mahaffey from Greenville Female College, Greenville, Misses Eula Cheek and Lucilo White, from Llmestono Col lege, Messrs. Ivory Curry and Court ney Andorson from Wofford, Richard Harris, Algle Putman and Earle Gar rett from Clemson.
