All of tho tins'1 packages have been sent out through the malls and will have been reo? i-ed before this pa per has been read. The bag was not iargc and it is not to be understood thut the amount was sufficient to send to more than a small portion of the people of the county. Louisville, Ky., Feb. 15.?Over 500 farmers in that part of Kentucky known as Jaokson's Purchase, lying between the Tennessee and Mississippi rivers, .and the Tennessee State line have agreed to plant only 50 per cent, of th' aoreage in tobacco thfs year and instead will try experiments in cotton. Cotton is no real experiment in this part of the State, but the richness of the soil and the previous good prices for tobacco have caused all energy to be devoted to tobacco. Now, however, with 20 cents cot'on talked of and the prospects in favor of 10 cents cotton for several years, and with the tobacco trust steadily reduc ing the farmers' return from the rais ing of the weed, the five hundred odd farmers who attended a mass meeting at Maylield Saturday afternoon unan imously agreed to plant only 50 per cent, in tobacco this year and to de vote the romalnder of the acreago to rottton. Gordon was ap pointed lieutenant-general by Presi dent Davis just after his brilliant cap ture of Fort Stedman, bat his commis sion did not reach him before the evac uation, and although he commanded a corps for some time, aod on the retreat was put by General Lee in command of one wing of the army, he always wrote "major general" as his real rank. The same was practically true of General Fitzhugh Lee, who commanded the cavalry corps afrer General Hampton was sent south. WALKED 4000 MILES, How an 11 Year Old Boy Sought a Kc wnrd. Blank and ragged from4,000 miles of "hobo" travel, Ben Oliver, an oloven year-old Indianapolis boy, who disap peared from his home two months ago, walked into tho police headquarters at Birmingham, Ala., says the Indianap olis News. He had just come into the city on the front end of a blind bag gage car on the C. & N. railroad from Now Orleans. He told tho pollco he had run away from his homo in Indian apolis and was making his way back. Since be left Indianapolis, he said, he had traversed many of tho roads in Texas and a portion of Moxlco in his soarch for Corpus Christi, Tex. Oliver told the Birmingham police that he worked about the wreck of tho Purdue special train, at Eighteenth street, in this city and that ho assisted in the work of rescue. He said he helped rescue the body of a young man from Corpus Christi, and ho thought he would make his way to that city and claim a reward.
