Knowing that you take a great Inter est in many things affecting the fsrmer I want to ask you to explain more fully than the News and Courier and Green ville News, Mr. Morgan's bill to amend Section 357 of Criminal Code in regard to violation of contract. If I understand Mr. Morgan's amendment it is one of the best acts of tho Legislature for the fanner. If I remembor aright Judge Watts tried to get the Legislature to pats this lldentical bill years ago when he was a member of that body. It I am correct, 1 am glad It origi nated with a Laurens man, though I would not attempt to rob the Green ville member of the honor of getting it passed. After a farmer has fed a hand through the winter months when a great portion of time he Is employed In getting himself firewood, then, for some trivial offenco, the hand leaves, and if arrested, the fine Is paid by some man who will gladly pay the $25, whioh is bad for the farmer and not best for the hand. It has made the most of our merchants suspicious of the farm ers and made some of them very Shy locks that want end demand their pound Of flesh. It has made more rascals,more debt shunning scamps, distressed and robbed more men of that God given honesty of heart and Integrity of char acter than all the blind tigers and dis pensaries combined. Away with it! Wipe it off the statutes of South Caro lina and let us farmers get back to that high plane of manhood that is our her itage by right and when a farmer's word will be as good as bis bond. I hope that you will wield your neu dar ing the coming campaign in such a way as to make all who favor the law afraid to show their heads. Respectfully, Farmer. The following is Mr. Morgan's bill: "A bill to amend the Criminal Code (Vol. 2, Code of Laws, 1802), as to La bor contracts. "Be it enacted by the General As sembly of the 8tate of South Carolina: "Section 1. That the Crio.lnal Code (Vol. 2, Code of Laws, 1002) be amend ed by adding after Section 367 a section to be known as Seotlon 3f>7a. to read as follows: Sec. 367a. That a conviction of either party mentioned in Sec. 866 and 367 of the Criminal Code (Vo*. 2, Code of Laws, 1002), for violation of sueh con tract as is mentioned in said sections, shall not operate as a release or dis charge of such person from the per formance of any part of said contract which is to be performed subsequent to the date of the breach for whioh such conviction was had: Provided, how ever that such person shall not be criminally liable for the non-perform ance of any obligation* due to bs per formed during the period of time such person may be undergoing Imprison ment. Mr. Harrison Copeland, of Clinton, has returned from a month's visit to his uncle, Mr, Bon Ramago, and his brother, Mr. Bluford Copeland, in Nashville, Ark. "It is a fresh country and the lands are good," said Mr. Copeland to an Advertiser reporter. '{There is no negro labor except in tho town. A man who buys a farm must pay for it with his own labor. There is little cotton left now unloss it Is in tho hands oi monled men. The climato is about the same as ours. Tho methods of cul tivation are much as ours, except that little guano is used . Tho organization will be powerful and will have plenty of financial aid. For Instance we have received letters from distilling concorns offering us $100, $200, $100 and $500 for a period of five years. The money will ho used in em ploying speakers to conduct the cam paign and in distributing printed mat ter. I see Irom their own statement that they bad 2,575,000 copies of anti literature printed. Of thc;o 1,355,800 wore sent directly to voters and 820,000 to places where elections woro held. This association oparates in 22 States and claims over <i0 per cent, of the vot ers. Now with these figures bofore us, arc wo as men of this great country of ours to stand still and fold our arms and let this vampire of death and de struction continue in our land and suck out the life blood of young men and to some oxtent of our women? It soems to me as this is an. election year that it will bo a good time for tho good people of tin wholo country to rise uo in their manhood rand womanhood and forever put to an end this work of the Devil, which is bringing shame and disgrace to the bright boys who are tho prido of many a fond mother's heart.
