LAUKENM, 8. C Jan. ?, 1904.
Care Should l>e Exercised.
The birthday of General Lee, Jan
uary 19, is one of the days for the be
stowal of crosses of honor upon Con
federates by the Daughters of the Con
federacy. This custom Is not only one
of the roost beautiful for its sentimen
tal motives but it is one of deep im
port and the results will be of lasting
value. As time goes on, the bronze
crosses will become of more and
more value. A century hence the great j
grand-childron of a Confederate veto- j
ran, holding one of these crosses, will
.have la it the very highest evidence of I
the progenitor's valor, patriotism and]
self-sacrifice. The bronze cross, com
ing down from tho hands of the wo
men who livid during and Immedi
ately after the war. tho best witnesses,
will forever i? 3 a sufficient and -con
vincing denial of nny charges of trea
son or rebellion that may be aimed by
thoso who are prone to tblnk that suc
cess is the sole tost of merit against
those whom vastly superior force ex
hausted but did not oonquor.
The real sigaificiance of these
crosses is scarcely yet realized. We
have heard that In some counties they
havo boen bestowed without strict re
gard and care. Tho laws governing
the bestowal and guarding the proof of
service and honorable disoharge of the
veterans which the Daughters have
adopted, are doubtless fill that are
needed. In I aurens County the Daugh
ters havo, we believe, shown a proper
oare and the veterans' camps have as
sisted them in preventing the bes'owal
upon any who are not entitled. We
havo heard, however, that in another
coun'y a cross was bestowed up3n a
Confederate deserter,?indicating that
sorao one was inexcusably negligent
wheh the crosses was given. The Inci
dent in Chester when Governor Hey-j
ward was offered a cross by enthusias
tic veterans is another illustration.
Tho governor is no more entitled to it
than any other son of a veteran. With
his usual good sense, he deolined it,
promptly seeing that ho bad no right |
to it. Had the governor been selfishly
vain or foolish, a serious mistake j
would have found placo on the Confed
era'o records.
We do not think that this warning Is j
necessary in Laurens but we hope, and
we happen to know that veterans share I
th? hope. thaf. the utmost care will be
used in tie sowal every where. Some
to (li- rs wore braver than others and
6ome more than others did their dutyi
but all who were enlisted and honora
bly discharged are entitled. It is only
possible to draw the line there but at )
that point it should be drawn with ri
gor.
*
To What Lynching Leads.
In Pineapple, Alabama, a white man
played craps with negroes and was
killed by a negro. Other white men
lynched the nogro. Then they tried to
burn the corpse and, starting a fire,
burned down half the town, loss $50,000.
Other white men are holding indigna
tion meetings and offering rewards for
the lynchers. When white men, for
crimes like murder, outrage the law by
mobbing a man, they are of oourse lia
ble to commit crimes themselves. Ii
is very difficult to conduct a lynoh
ing decently and in perfect order.
When the lynching is being arranged,
the fire department should be called]
out beforehand.
?
"Dealing in Futures."
It was said in Laurens when cotton
sold for live cents the pound, by men
who had cotton to sell, that the Wall
Street speculators were to blame. The
Wall Street speculators are still
blamed, with cotton at more than
double that figure, ? by some of
thoso who have cotton to buy.
The moral is that any loudmouthed
person may rail at Wall Street. Itcosts
nothing and relieves the feelings of
the unlucky. We doubt, however. If
the legislaturo will this year petltloi
congress to outlaw "dealing in fu-|
tures."
*
Hard on The State.
The chairman of the State Board of
Control and the state whiskey commis
sioner will not be candidates for reelec
tion. This is a reflection upon South
Carolina. It Is equivalent to saying I
that no office In the gift of the people |
is good enough for them.
?
The Obylous Explanation.
The trouble with thoio Columbia
cotton mills is that the stocks were wa
tered from the Congaroe. Everybody
knows that Congaree water Is no good
for uny purpose.
?
Young Joe Bailey of Texas is gen
erally conceded now* to be the ablest
Democrat in the United States Sonate,
exoept perhap3 old Senator Morgan.
Bailey h also rich.
?
Mr. Hey ward has been In office for
about a year. He has probably turned
out to be a bolter governor than we
deserve.!.
?
If you would pay your best girl a
pretty compliment, tell her she Is worth
her weight In cotton.
The Isthmus of Panama is the neck
lu which Colombia got it.
*
We know of no practicable way to
prevent the general assembly of South
Carolina con vor Ing In Colombia next
Tuesday.

The people as well as the lawyers of
South Carolina need two more judicial
circuits.

EXAMPLE OF JACKSON
The Honest Man Was a Member or
Stonewall Jackson's Brigade
Bank Teller's Experience.
To The Editor of The Sun:?Just
now, while (here Is an epidemic of con
science in the land, I beg leave to ask
upon what meat do these victims of
conscience feed? How may I get next
to them?
V }v about a do/.en years I stood at a
bank's toller's desk, giving and re
ceiving money. It cannot be that I
was absolutely accurate all of that
time, lu all moods and In all weathers;
yet never, never did any man, save
One, come baok and say that I had paid
him too much, though so I must have
done, for my "balahoe" at evening
was, at times, an abomination to tho
Lord for It was a "false balance."
The sole exception was an old soldier
of the original Stonewall Brigade,
Charles F. Miller, now of Cheyenne,
Wyo., and I take pleasure In giving
bis name t > Fame, for use In her ob
streperous trumpet and to banks for a
patron saint. Dwelling, or rather ex
isting, in the perpetual dew of Stone
wall Jackson's prayers, no doubt is
what made ibis one different from
other men.
At this blithe season, bending,
I'll whisper to the clod;
To the chill grass where shadows pass
And leafless branches nod.
That is to say, while men are run
ning here and there to make restitu

to hear if any one, fleeing from bis con
science is coming my way.

White Stone Lithia Has Leading
Physician s Endorsement,
Is the lightest water on the market. We realize that this is claiming a grout
deal, and wo could not afford to make this assertion unless wo know that we
could prove it to bo true. But it does not take an oxpert to test tho toftnoss of
a Mineral Water. When carbonating a mineral water, if it Is a hard water the
gases will not be absorbed in the water, and when the bottle is opened, tho gas
es eRcape, and the water Is left Hat and hard, while if it it? a soft water, like
White Stono Lithia, it will re'ain its gases for hours after being unstopped.
Read what some prominent persons you know have to say of the merits of
the White Stone Lithia Water:

Dear Sir?1 do unhesitatingly state
that tho ? llleicy of White Stone Lithia
Wate-, not from its splendid analysed

elimin -ting the impuritlos of tho blood
through its marked diuretic effects,
and in so doing restores the secr.uory
and excretory orgaus of tho b;)dy to
their normal physiological state. So in
this p ovjs I'm properties to be of g*eit
value in assisting dlgestioa, assimila
tion and increasing the appetite. Tnere
foro wo can reco^ni/. 5 it as a m'tntal
water of powerful tonic propartle* and
should he highly rocommonded inston
ach and livor disorders, b!oid disturb
ances, rhoumatism, gout, dlabe'.es,
Brijht's diseaso, and in all inactive
conditions of the kidneys and convales
cing diseases.
I feel mvself, that I am justly duo an
acknowledgement of tho happy effects
I derived from Its use.
