WE OLD RELIABLE Absolutely [?uro THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE |l TRIBUTE OF RESPECT. Dr. J. A. Martin was born at Pleasant Mound, Linurons County, S. C, on the 2?rd <biy of February, 1850. He was tbcsonof Reuben and Matilda Mar tin, born of parentage whoso ancest ry is lost, in tho mazes of antiquity, but whoso works follow after Iii . Reu ben Martin was lor many years, even to his death, one of the most successful farmers and merchants in Laurcns County, but whilo rich in material things ho did not forgot to "lay up treasures in heaven." He was for many years a leading spirit in the War rior Creek Baptist Church. Our beloved and deceased brother in Christ and in tho ministry, joined tho Warrior Crock Baptist Church in his Kith year, September, 22nd, 1800, under the ministry of that grand old horo of tho Cross, Rev. Toliver Robertson, of whom hundreds still live in Laurens County to call him blessed. Dr. Martin was impressed at his con version that bo was called to preach tho gospel and made those convictions known to his father. His father being a vory pious and conservative man and for fear ho might be mistaken, advised his son to pray over it and ponder these convictions deeply in his heart until he was fully satisfied that ho was called of Cod to the wouk. For tins cause he did not enter the work immediately, but he struggled with those convictions which weighed heavily upon his heart at times for nino long years. During this period of time he attended the Medical University of Georgia and graduated with first honors on tho 2nd day of March, 187?. He entered immediately upon tho practice of medicine at his home and was very successful from the beginning and had quite an extensive and lucrative practice. But this was not his lifo work, his deep heart folt conviction: "Woe, unto me if I preach not the gospel." So ho made a full surrender of it all to preach the un searchable riches of our Lord Jesus Christ and never was he more happy than when he was proclaiming tho glad news of salvation and telling the sweet old story of the Cross and the unbound* ing love of our Lord and Savior Jc3its Christ. Ho was a good pastor; wise and conservative in his counsel; atToo tionatc to his churches and congrega tions: devoted and loyal to overy object fostered by the denomination. iJo was licensed to preach the gospel by Warrior Creek Baptist Church un der the ministry of Rev. A. C. Stepp, July, 2l?th, 1882. He entered tho Southern Baptist Theological Seminary iu 1883- He did not remain the entire session, owing to his health giving way. Ho camo homo and recuperated, and roturncd to tho Seminary in the full of 1881 and remained until tho spring of 1885. Ho was ordained March, 21th, 1883, by a Prosbytory consisting of Revs. A. C. Stepp and B. F. Garrott. Other ministers were invited, but could not attend. Ho was united in marriage to Miss Theodosia Meredith on the 2oth of Jan uary, 1877. To thorn were born seven children, six girls and one son: Mr, Claud Martin, a graduate of Furman University: Miss Lucia Martin, a grad uate of the Greenvil'o Female Collogo, both of whom arc teachers in Laurens County: Mrs. Ostoll Fowler now of Bir mingham, Ala. Dr. Martin was a strong believer In education. This was manifested In the Hacriljccs ho made to givo his ot'ldren tho very b: *t. Dr. Martin wa* a good preacher, en dowed largely with the evangelistic qualifications. Never was ho more happy than when seeing sinners com ing to Christ and being saved. His min istry was confined principally to Lau rons, Spartanburg and Greenville coun ties, and hundreds live today saved un der bis ministry to thank God that he ovor lived to preach tho blessed truths of reconciliation and joy and peaco in tho Holy Ghost. Tho writer remembers three gfa cious meetings at old Cedar Shoal Church under his pastorate, Tho first year at ono time he baptizod forty eight, tho second year tbirty-sovon and tho third year twenty-seven. Jiut on the 0th day of August, 1003, God said to him: "It is enough, come up higher, thou hast boon faithful ovoi a fow things, I will make thee rulei over many things, enter thou into tho ?joys of thy Lord," And tho sorrowing wifo and bereaved children, brothers and sisters, would we commend to the God of all grace and to tho blessed Lord Jesus, and tho Holy Comforter, who said: "All things work together for good to them that love God."?Ro mans 8:28.
