BREWERTON, S. C. Feb. 7.?-Owing
to tho continued rains the roads are
simply fearful. It is with a great deal
of dilllculty that the farmers get toj
market.
Work at tho Ware Shoals Is pro-1
grossing well, considering tbo cold in
clement weather. Two phone wires
conneot the Shoals with Laurens and
ere long the Shoals will have a railroad
from Barmore'son the Southern. This
will facilitate carriage of material to
the Shoal?. Sometime ago mention was
made concerning tho building of or
completing the road which was graded
via the Shoals and through Sullivansl
Township to Greenville. We do not see*
why it should not be to tho advantage
of some company to finish this road. In
our humble opinion this could be made j
one of the best roads in tho Stato, as it,
goes through the very best, or ns good
farming sections as there are in the
South. Our people aro ready to do
what they can to get this road iu oper-j
tion. The far greater part of the grad
ing is already done. So we are now
ready to negotiate w ith some enterpris
ing company who will como along this
way.
The school at Hrewerton is very good
and is getting along well under the
management of our teacher, the Rev.
J. O. Marlin. Up to date there are 55
scholars enrolled. By way of an ex
hibit and an entertainment the sohool!
had a debate last Frflaay ? The subject
was: "Resolved, that if preference
shou'd be given, the boy should bo bet
ter educated." The cogative won. The
school will have another next Friday.
"Resolved, that city life is more advan
tageous to the culture and development
of tho young." The trustees and pa
trons are earnestly requested to be on
hand. We take this occasion to invite
our County Superintendent, Mr.
Brooks to be with us. We think it is)
getting time for him to come over and
seo how we aro getting along.

vention met in Columbia last week. F.
II Hyatt of Columbia is president and
State Geologist Earle Sloan is secre
tary.
The most important business trans
acted was tbe passage of the following
resolutions:
Whereas the development of the re
sources and industries and the ad
vancement of tho highest civilization
of this State largely depend upon the
facilities for intercourse and trans
poralion, and
Whereas the constantly Increasing
service imposed upon tho highways
renders them extremely difficult to
travel, tho Improvement of these high
ways becomes an Imperative necessity
for which the present statutory pro
visions are lamentably inadequate,
therefore be it
Resolved, That the honorable legis
lature now in session be earnestly me-1
morialized to enaot suoh legislation as
will relieve the oppressive burdens of!
almost impossible travel to the marts
of trade, to the school houses and to
churches. That this honorable body
be petitioned accordingly to firant the
following prayers, to wit:
1. That tbo respective counties be
authorized to issue county bonds for
the betterment of their public high
ways and bridges, provided the "[ma
jority of such qualiflold electors as are
free-holders may so decide in an elec
tion to bo called by the county com
missioners.
2. That tho respective boards of
county commissioners of this State be
authorized to institute a tax levy for
tbe improvement of their respective
roads and bridges.
3. That th-> honorable legislature
will enjoin upon our representatives in
congress the importanco of according
their earnest support to tho measure
now pending befoto that body whioh
provides for national co operation in
the improvement of the public high
ways, tho same being essential to tbe
ready transmission of the United
States mails.
4. That the honorable senate be urged
to enact tho measure approved by the
honorable house which provides that
all convicts under sentence to penal
servitude for a period of 10 years or
Irsi sba<l sorve on tho chaingangs of
tho respective counties in which they
have been convicted,
5. Resolved, That tho chairman shall
appoint a committee of which he shall
be ex-omcio chairman, to tender a copy
of theeo resolutions to tho appropriate
committee of the senate and house and
to urge that they grant the relief
herein prayed.
The .second section at first indicated
that each township might be taxed at
the discretion of tho majority of its
free holders but this was thought inad
visable and that section was so altered
as to force the richer townships to help
the poorer ones In oase of a tax leyy.
