AN ANCIENT BIT OF HISTORY. SASH WINDOW8. Probably a Datcli Iuvcntlon of tb? Seventeenth Century. ! Tho history of snsh windows Is some what obscure, but tho probability Is that they were n Dutch Invention nml that they wore Introduced Into Bug? laud soon after tho revolution of 1088. The derivation of the word "sash" iu this sense is tho Dutch "sas," a sluice old English "snsse." In Queen Anne's rolgn thoy were yet so comparatively uncommon ns to bo mentioned as a special feature of houses that were advertised as "To let." In the Tatler, for Instance, No. 178, May 27-30, 1710, there is this advertisement: "To bo lett, in Devonshire Square, near Blshopsgato, a very good Brick House of 3 Booms of a Floor, and a good Hall, with very good light and dark Closets, tho whole House being well wainscoted, and sash'd with 30 Sash Lights, a very pleasant and con venient OUlce below Stairs," etc. From England they pnsscd Into ?France, where the first to put them up was Marshal do Lorge at his new houso at Montmartre. Speaking of this, Lister In 1090 writes in his "Jour ney to Paris:" "We had the good for tune hero to find the marshal himself. He showed us his great sash windows, how easily they might-bo lifted up and down and stood at any height, which contrivance, he said, ho had out of (England by n small model brought on purpose from thence, there being noth ing of this poise In windows in Franco before."?London Standard. Frenh Clotlilnff. Go to bed in fresh clothing every night. Never think of allowing your* Belt to sleep In the clothing worn dur ing tho day?not a stitch of it. Take everything off. Put on night clothing that has been thoroughly aired. When you get up in tho morning, take off everything again. This Is the time to take n cold bath, very quickly, with vigorous rubbing. If for any ren bou you do not take the cold bath, rub your skin all over thoroughly with a rough towel. Don't be afraid of being naked a little while. Thero Is no better tonic for the skin than nakedness. Take off everything. Giro yourself a little hand massage. (Exerclso tho muscles. Rub your skin (with a coarse towel, anything, so as to spend a little time naked. Then put on fresh clothing. Peoplo who wear tho same clothes every night and day got themselves surrounded by an ntmosphero of their own bodily emanations that Is very' unhealthy. Neither faith cures nor 'drug cures are of n particle of use to dirty people. Cleanliness Is tho first law of health. If this law bo broken, It will bo very little use to try any remedy.?Exchange. ? ? Slow Water Freexe?. It used to puzzle all thinking people (Why ponds and rivers do not freeze be yond a certain depth. This depends on a most curious fact?namely, that wa ter is at its heaviest when It reaches 40 degrees F.?that Is, 8 degrees above freezing point. On a frosty night ns each top layer of water falls to -10 de grees it sinks to tho bottom; therefore the whole pond has to drop to 40 de grees beforo any of it con freeze. At last it is all cooled to this point, and then ico begins to form. But ice is n [very, bad conductor of heat; therefore It shuts off the freezing air from the big body of comparatively warm wa ter underneath. Tho thicker it gets tho moro perfectly does it act as a great coat, and that Is why oven tho Arctic ocean nover freezes beyond a few feet in thickness.?Marine Jour nal. Ilard to Get. A certain young fellow received a government berth, for which he had to undergo n very strict examination. Ono day a friend of his who had been noticing how little work he did to earn his salary tackled him. "I say, Walter, my boy," ho began, "you don't perform a great deal of la bor, do you?" I "No, I don't hnvo to." I "Aren't you expected to work?" "Of eourso not," was tho candid re ply. "It tokes so much hard work to get a job liko this that tho authorities baven't tho nervo to ask a man to do anything more to earn his salary after be gets it" An ISnterprlalnir Bnrjclur. A professional burglar in Berlin found a new and original way of add ing to the ordinary profits of his pro fession. After each burglary ho sent a full account of it to ono of tho dally newspapers, and for this ho received payment in the usual way. But ho tried bis plan onco too often. The editor beenmo suspicious and gave in formation to the police, who soon found how this amateur reporter was able to beat all rivals in the way of early Information. During n recent fostlvul at Neuilly a young woman attracted tho attention of a Inrgo crowd by holding u heavy bar of iron between ucr tooth. Among thoso who watched her wns a dentist, and at tho close of, hor performance a luminous idea came to him, und lie de termined 10 carry it out. Going to tho young woman, ho said: "Mademoiselle, l am a dentist, and therefore I am more Impressed with tho ?wonderful power of your jaws than any one else. Now, I am about to make a proposition to you. I will give you S'J?O if you will write a letter to mo saying that vou do all this work by the aid of a srl of false tooth which I havo manufactured for you." After some thought tho young wo man replied: "I will accept your offer on one condition. Vou must first glvu mo as many dollars as 1 van rai.se from tho ground with my teeth." Tho dontlst hesitated a moment and then said that he would give her In dollars as many 26 cent pieces us she could raise, To, this she agreed, and a few minutes inter tho dentist was al ums! stupefied when ho saw her raise a weight which was equal to that of $10,000. It wns a costly advertisement for tho dentist. Th? Old Surf lJadi. It is not so many years ago when surf bathing of a very primitive kind prevailed at the eastern end of Long I Island and, for aught I know, at olh I er points. Every Saturday morning or afternoon, as the tldo willed, through out tho summer big farm wagons trun dled down to tho bench and wero swung around abreast of tho Hue of breakers. Old llshhouscs served the purpose of modern bathing pavilions, and tho sea costumcfa were thoso of lnst year's village ptreot. A long rope was drawn from under the seats and hitched to the wheel, and then some Sturdy ex-whaler or life crew man In red flannel shirt and old trousers tied at tho ankles slipped lib? waist through the loop at the end of this primitive life lino and, wading out, kept it as taut as circumstances permitted, while tho women and children bung to it and reveled and wallowed and shrieked, rejoicing in their "Saturday tub."? Outing. Vnfxyected Success, There are times when an honest con fession of ignorance results to one's advantage. An examination of history "wns going on In a high school. Tho second row of tho scholars looked su premely contented. They knew what was coining next and wero confident of making brilliant recitations. The professor gravely put tho question: "What been mo of the Greeks who wore slain at Thermopjioj?" Tho first hoy hesitated and then haz arded, "Burnt 'cm." "Next," was the icy answer. "Buried 'em," came from tho second promptly. "Oh, what an easy one!" "Next." "Don't know," drawled tho third boy hopelessly. "Right. Nobody does." Tho successful one looked surprised; then ho crowed a lilt Io. Tho other two looked sheepish.?London Tit-Bits. Divers* MihIucsm. An Australian pearl diver says that ono of tho strange effects of diving Is tho Invariable bad temper felt while working at the bottoin\>f the sea. As this usually passes away as soon as the surfaco is reached, it Is probably duo to tho pressure of the air affecting the lungs and through them tho brain. Tho exhilaration and good temper of tfio ' mountain climber arc contrary feelings from nn opposite cause. A diver be comes so angry at some imaginary wrongdoing on tho part of thoso in tho bont nhovo that ho gives tho signal to bo pulled up, "with tho intention of knocking tho heads off the entlro crow," only to forget what he cunio up for when tho surfaco Is reached. What Passl?d lUm. Sir Joshua Fitch told a story of the uaturo study exhibition la London Il lustrating the popular wonder at scl entlflO knowledge.
