DEATH OF MRS. 1?. S. LUCAS. Mother of Messrs. W. E. Mild T. C. Lucas Passes A \> ii v. Mrs. BUen Lucas, wife of Dr. B, s. haras, of Hartsville, died at tho home ol her son, President W. E. Lucas, of the Ijaurens Cotton Mill, at 8.46 Sunday morning in this city. Had she lived she would have passed her 68th birthday yesterday. Mrs. Lucas bad boon in failing health for several months and bocinno worse at Glenn Springs ten days ago. She was brought to Laurens and was better for ft few days but began to sink last Thursday. She was a devoted member of the Methodist Church and her Ufo was that Of a consistent Christian who bravely mot all duties. Shohad strong, forceful traits of mind and character which left their impress for good in tli" circle of her family aud friends. She was before her marriage Miss King, of Darlington county The body was taken to Darlington County Monday and and intorred Tues day at tho Gulloy Church cemetery, near the old family home. Besides her husband, three sons, W. Ernest und T. C. Lucas, of Laurens und Edwin R. Lucas, of Walhalla, and two daughters, Mrs. T. J. Drew and Mrs. Ralph Dargan. of Darlington, survive bur. All of those wero hero at the. time of her death. Dr. Lucas and the family have had much sympathy from the people of Lau rens in their bereavement. PICNICEH AT KNORKE. Laurens Pythlans and Their Friends at Mill's Spring. On tho morning of tho 4th a happy party of about 40 Laurens Knights of Pythias including their friends went by rail to Hill's Spring at Enoree where they spont the day. It was ex pected that the pythlans of Enoree, Woodruff and Clinton would join In the picnic but the attendance from thoso lodges was small. The day was pleasantly spent aud a good dinner was onjoyod. Among tho ladles in the party were: Mrs. S. G. McDaniel, Mrs. McDaniel, Sr., Mis ses Lee Nelson, Gena Bramlett, Jessio Hix, Clara Adams, Zeline Gray, Mrs. J. J. Pluss, Mrs. J. A mortgago covering the properties of the Seaboard Air Lino Itallway was Hied in Clerk '?clt'o enir-o Monday The amount of the mortgage is sevonty live million dollars. The mortgage filled a fair sized took. It is a supple mentary mortgage to a similar ono filed some years ago. Of course It Is filed in tho record of fices of all the counties and states in which the properties aro located. The clerk only receives a small fee, less than ten dollars out of it. Funeral ol Mrs. Barksdalo. The funeral of Mrs. Dr. John A. Barksdalo took placo from the resi dence last Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. D. Pitts olllclating. The interment was in tho family burying ground at Dr. Barksdale's formor home, two miles north of the city. Mr. Dibble, of Orangoburg and Miss Nivla Patton, of Gray Court, were mar ried at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs. Peggy Patton yesterday afternoon, the Rev. J. K. McCain, of ficiating. Mr. Pick Parks caught a queer look ing web-footed yoimg turtle or cooter in Kabun the other day which excited much curiosity in the city Monday. It Is a green turtle with spots aud a soft shell. Attention is called to tho fact that thore Is a vacant scholarship for tho Citadel from this county and so a chanre for education at tho best mili tary school except West Point is of fered to 8omo ambitious boy. Soe ad vortisment. Will Ricbey, who has completed his first year at tho Citadel, has been ap pointed a corporal in one of the cadet companies. He is a typical young sol dier and Laurens has a flno repre sentative in him. He will come out a captain,?mark the prediction. Mr. W. F. Dargan, of Darlington, was in the city last week on a brief visit to Mr. W. B. Lucas. Mr. Dargan was formerly mayor of Darlington and later a member of the legislature. He is ono of tho leading lawyers and men of the Peedee country. The Methodists of Clinton aro pre paring to build a new church. The Clinton Chronicle urges them to build a .handsome church, to cost not loss than $5,000, which is wise advico. Clinton is growing too rapidly for cheap churches. A baseball team from Newborry will be here next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to try conclusions with our local sluggers. The Newborry ag gregation is a laurel winner, and claim that Laurons scalps will come easy, while the Laurens boys aro daily get ting in shape for tho series, of games, and promise to make things lively for the visitors. Everybody should turn out to sec the locals lasso victory. Fine Institution. Tho University of North Carolina is ono of tho vory beet of Southern col leges. It has 8011 students, charges teachers no tuition and advertises loans made to needy students under certain conditions. It has law, mcdl oine and pharmacy, besides academic departments. See tho announcement eleowhore. Mrs. Lucy Martin Dead. Mrs. Lucy Martin, wife of Mr. Addi son Martin, died last Wednesday at her home near this city. She wns about 35 years old. Her husband and four children survive. She was a granddaughter of the lato Captain James Hudgons. Tho funeral and in. torment were at Ohoatnut R'.dge church Thursday. A gang of railroad section hands, while making some repairs on the tres tle across Littlo river on the C. & W. C. railroad, last week, boarded a real blind tigor in his lair, The aforesaid tiger was unearthed. His domicile watt some few feet under terra flrmia,- and contained therein several bottle's of dives and sundry shapes, with as many thirst quonchlng concoctions. This ti ger's habitat w?s a wooden-box. The contents were confiscated, but we know nob by whom. ENJOYED THE DAY. IIow The Glorious Fourth was Observed. Representative Johuson and Other Candidates to the Cotton Mill People?Basehall Haute. Congressman Josoph T. Johnson aud a number of candidates for county of fices spoke to the people of Factory Hill on the Fourth of July at Holmes spring. The Mills shut down for Fri day and Saturday. A number of peo ple from other parts of the town at tended, stores and other places of business having been closed for the day. Refreshments wero served by ladies of Martha Washington Chapter order of Rebecca ? tho ladlos' branch of the Odd Follows. Tho following com mittee of ladios and gentlemen wero id oharge: Mrs. Annie Blakoley, Mrs. Annie Johnson, Miss Stella Touch stone, Mrs Ella Satterwhite, Mrs. ?Khella Blakeley, Miss Rosa Lee Thompson and Messrs. S. A. Bowie, C. C Johnson, W. M. Blakeley, S. J. Thompon and R. C. Skenos. The com mittee served ices and othor light re freshments and added much to the on io\ merit of the assemblage. The Cot ton Mills band furnished exoellont mu sic between the speeches. Mr. S. Frank Parrott presided over the meet ing and introduced the spoakors. Congressman Johnson's speech was devoted to national issues. In the clear, simple and strong style of which ho Is master ho pointed out tho evils of the ship subsidy measure, the Re publican Philippine policy and the general Republican policy of extrava gant expenditures. Ho had the olose attention of tho audience and his speech received commendation on all sides. Brief speeches were then mado by Mossrs. Jarcd D. Sullivan, Robert A. Cooper and Wm. C. Irby, Jr., candi dates for the house of representatives and Messes. W. A. McCllntock and O. O. Thompson, candidates for judge of probate. A number of othor candi dates were preseut, but did not speak. The occasion was greatly enjoyed. Numbers of ladies were present and some dozens of especially pretty little girls, who in white dresses mado the scone under the fine trees at the soring where the spoaking was a charming one. Clinton and Laurens baseballists bad a nine inning go at it on the glorious Fourth. The result was that the Clinton Mill team walked away with the home aggregation to tho tuno of 0 to 3. Quito a large and demonstrative crowd witnessed the game. It was played on Factory Hill. Tho batteries wero Irby and Gosnoll for Laurens; McCrary and Williams for Clinton. NEW OFFICERS IN CHARGE.
