Tho death Angel has entered our community and claimed us his victem, our beloved brother and long Intimate, friend, John Webster Clark, who was born in Spartanburg county on Feb ruary 16lb, 1811.1, and died at his home in I.aureus county on Maroh 2nd, 1002. Age sixty-nine years Before the war he was a Captain in the Stato Militia. Ho promptly vol unteered to defend the rights of his State In tho war between tho States, and was woundod in the seven days battlo at Richmond; this wound brought on typhoid fever from whieh he came near dying at tho time. He often suU'ered from the bullet which found lodgment in bis body, and which he carried to the grave. He was for many years a devoted member of L?ngsten Baptist Church. He served tho church for many years as Olork, which office ho held at bis death; unusually liberal in his contri butions, responding to every call, often f;olng beyond his means?but It was ndeed a joy for him to give. He was a model in punctuality, always at every service both Saturday and Sun day if he was not providoutially hin dered. He was exemplary in his fidelity to tho word of God, never let ting a day pass without reading his Bible; he loved to read; he had accu mulated a good library, and his center table we9 always loaded with papers and magazines, both secu'ar and relig ious. He was an affectionate husband, a devoted father, a good provider, full of energy, often going beyond his strength. Hono&t and upright, and a lover of his fellow man. But God said to him: "It is enough you have fought a good Hight, you have Onished your course, you havo kept tho faith, como up higher and receive a crown of right eousness, prepared for all them that love the appearing of the Lord Josus." Caldwell, left for his home, Duo West, S. C, the following day. Mr. A. L. Balentino, who-has been confined in the State Lunatic ^Asylum for more than two years, and tho last six months confined to his bed was brought home on Monday the 10th inst. in a very feeble condition. Mrs. Palmly Beeks who has been sick for more than two weeks is im proving. Very little farm work is being done on account of so much rainy weather. It is rumored that Dr. Willie Jones and two of his family just across the Saluda, have small pox. Wheat looking very well since it came out of winter quarters and with the abundance of rain . Our efficient Superintendent of Ed ucation, C F. Brooks, was through our section last Friday, but two late for our school as it closed the day be fore. Sorry that we were not at home to entertain him. So como again Mr. Brooks, for wo won't count this visit. We are very sorry, indeed, to learn of the illness of our beloved Editor, Col. B. W Ball. Who ev^r ho was, he drew thestaplo from the snb'o door of Mrs Cresswell Garlington's barn and stable and took her horse and went away with the animal for parts unknown. As yet nothing has been heard of the horse or thief, though the Sheriff and the police are at work on the case. Ono or two clues have been fol'owed, but without avail so far as regainTig the horso or catching the thief Is concerned. It is reported that the thief went off In the direction of Union or Spartanburg. Just as we go to press, we learn that this horse has been recovered, being found in an old outhouse on the pluco of Mr. Benjamin, eight miles from town. United Daughters of tho Confederacy Day. Through the Charleston Chaptor, United Daughters of the Confederacy a cordial invitation was extended at the last State Convention to meet in Charleston on a U. D. 0. Day to be named during tho Exposition. April 12th has been selected as the day for this reunion and the "Daughters" throughout the South are urged to g. acothe hospitable old city with their presence on what is sure to bo a mom orublo occasion. The monotony of our community was recently relieved by a beautiful wed ding at the residence of Mr. A. E. Cleveland, on the 11th inst. Miss Gena Byrd has returned home after a pleasant visit to relatives and friends in your city. Mr. J. P. Saxon, of Huntington, was hero last Friday. Mr. J. Ii. Ray, who has been in Un ion for some time attending to bis farm, has returned home. Dr. G. F. Moseley spent ono day last week hero. Mrs. K. C. It will be sometime In May. Greenville 19 making big prep arations, and the "Vets" will doubt less have an exceptionally good time. Tho Daughters of the Cenfederacy, whose last meeting was postponed on account of inclement weather, will meet at the residence of Mrs. W. E. Lucas on Thursday, March the 20th, at 3: 30 o'clock. Some thief or thieves broke Into several outhouses belonging to Dr. Anthony Fuller, recently,and purloined a small quantity of corn and several gallons of home-made wine. Such depredations are becoming qulto fre quent those days. Tho announcement ha9 boon made in the Augusta papers that Mr. Jesse Wilkes Westmoreland, who la well known in this county, will be married to Miss Alice Garrott, of that city on the 2nd of April, prox. Both are prominent society people of Augusta. Mr. Westmoreland has relatives here. The presentation of Fabio Romani at the Opera House last Friday night by Alden Benedict's company was very good and satisfactory to all who were present. The company is a strong ono and better than the average that play hero. This performance deserved a larger attendance. The Secretary of State has issued a commission to Messrs L. A. McGord and G. W. Walkor to open books of subscription to the capital stock of The McCord Merchandise Company. This concern will transact a general mer chandising business, and will bo capa tali/od at $10,000, the shares being of the par value of $10.00. These gentle men are bright, enterprising, business men and no doubt will mako a success of this company. The Lyceum Lecture by Robert Har Eer, la9t night, wa9 thoroughly enjoyed y a large and appreolative audience. Mr. Harper Is a pleasing and Instruc tive lecturer, and admirably illustrated his talk with stereuptlcon vlows. This ontortainment ended the Lyceum Course. The promoters of It deservo to be congratulated for tho admirable and high-class entertainments pro vided for our people this winter, and it is hoped no efforts will be spared to have a similar coune arranged for next season. Mrs. Dora Copeland, wife of Mr, William J. Copeland, one of our lead* ing citizens, died at her home three mfios from the city, about noon Satur? day la:.i. She was a Miss Badgett, of this county, before hor marriage. Her husband and several children survive her. Mr. J. A. Copeland of this olty was a step son. The funeral and burial exercises wero held at the City Como tory Monday at 3 o'clock. The inter ment was postponed from Sunday un til Monday on account of the rain. Her family have the sympathy of the entire community. There certainly will bo a Court of General Sessions for Laurens County, beginning tho sooond Monday in April and lasting ton days if necessary.
