LAUBENS, S> C, Mar. 12, 1002. Tho Term "Tlllmanlsui." The pliilologist is doubtless deeply lntorested in the growth of tho moan ing given to the word "Tillmanibm." For several years past this term was accepted by all within the confines of this commonwealth, and evou to some extent, beyond, as a term denoting the views and political doctrines of Sena tor Tlllman. A largo majority of tho qualified voters of the State concurred in t liis meaning, though it was consist ently dissented from by a strong mi nority. As ovents proved the doc trines denoted by the term "Tillman i8m" wero not of passing duration, and accordingly tho word becamo a very common one in tho every day vocabu lary of the people. But ruthless fate was not to allow tho word to bo confin ed within such narrow limits or to havo only a local meaning. Skipping over the stages of its gradual growth wo come to see it as it is now uudorstood, as having1 acquired a much broader signification. In its latest sense it is aynonomous with pugilism. Tho rea son of this now meaning being attach ed to tho term is because of the recont exoiting scene betwoon Senators Till man and McLaurin in the newly dis coverod fistic arena, commonly known as the (U.S.) Senate chamber. An Inci dent similar to this In all Its disgrace ful details,we read in the daily papers, occurred In that august and dignified body, the common counoil of Boston. Two members thereof,became Involvod in a heated debate, and the He being passed, the two bellicose gentlomon, did not wait for tho gong to sound, but sprung at each other in Senatorial stylo, a conflict being narrowly avert ed by others who were present. The incidont being duly chronicled In the yellow journals, was dubbed as an out break of "Tiilmantem." Hence we see that tho term has acquired a signifi cation?no longer local?but of Na tional importance?that to describe its ecope is as difficult as to say which is the best routo for digging the Isthmian canal. Then, too, tho term Is broad enough to cover the effervescences of nephew "Jim", whom it will bo re membered, presumed to be the whole State (of S, C.) when he sent his fa mous telegram to President Roosevelt asking him to withdraw his acceptance to present Col. Mlcah Jenkins a sword. It is bowildering to watch tho growth of some terms?wc wonder what next? * * h Last wook in Florence county a ne gro fiend committed tho usual crime. Excitement ran high, and a large mob would havo Instantly lynched tho pris oner, had not the plucky Sheriff assur ed them that justice would be speedily meted out to the brute, and that a spe cial term of court would bo granted with all possible speed to try bis case. The Governor was called upon to order a session of the court immediately. As court was in session nt another place in tho circuit, the question was raised as to whether another court could be legally held at Florence. The matter was referred to the Attorney-General's office, and It wa9 decided that court could be held there just as soon as tho requirements of law as regards the drawing and summoning of the jury could be compiled with. This certain ly was a proper solution of the ques tion. Tho crime of which this negro is guilty and tho attondent evil of lynch law la entirely of too frequent occur rence, and it is eminently fit and proper that tho due process of law should be had and tho majesty of tho law vin dicated. This fiend will bo tried by a special court which convenes the 31st instant. *# The citizens of Yorkvillo havo at last decided that that city must again engage in the rum business. By a close vote tho friends of tho Great Moral Institution won out over the ?'Teetotalers". The argument used to J advance tho Dispensary cause was that the sale of whiskey would bring an I almost unlimited amount of new busi ness to the town. Possibly ao?fo* the Rum Mill at any rate. Greenwood is a thriving town, yet she has no Dispen sary. Nevertheless tho Yorkville peo ple will, llko the Romans and Athe nians have to see the "pint" or remain thirsty. ??? South Carolina has Major Mlcah Jenkins at least to point to with pride as others of her prominent sons are passing tho reviow stand and hundreds of noblo voterana will recall hU splen did father, General Micah Jonkins, than whom a the Confederacy had no suporior spirit. Tun Advektiser will not despair that tho breed of noble blood will still survive In South Car olina. * * * Tho 20th of March Is sot apart as Carolina day at tho Exposition. It will b3 largely attended from all parts of the State and will be a splendid op portunity for Carolinians to see Caro linians. Tho rates will be low from all parts of the State. Accomodations in . the city are reasonable, and now is tho time for our pcoplo to go to Charleston before wo ge<; too busy in trying to make another crop. *#* No other than a Prince of the Ger man J?mplre could havo run tho gaunt let of cootaot with millions of fheir people In this country without being insulted. The Crown Prlnee Henry, many, has cortainly been ent royally during his visit to this country. There has boon nothing short or meagor in hia reception. Money hae been lavishly expended and all pi-op erations were made and carried out ou a colossal seile. The Prinoehas shown himself to have a lot of sound* sense, and besides is a jolly good fellow. The last few days of bis visit were spent in New York. One inoident of the pro gramme arranged in his honor was a concort by the Arion Bocioty, winners of the Kaisers medal year before last. At this concert "Old Kentuoky Home" and "Dixie" were specially rendered, and at bis request. He expressed the opinion that he had never heard bet ter or sweeter muslo In his life. We believe the Prince was sincere and that his remark was not Intended to bo taken as fulsome flattery. Whether or not his Highness' visit had a political purpose in viow, certain it is that it has dono much to establish warmer and raoro friendly foellngs for our brothers who keep "Die Vatch on dem Rhein" over in the "Fadorland " That he en joyed that boautiful melody so de^r to all Southerners, "Dixlo," is sufficient to make him woll thought of by all Southern people Weil, the prlnco evinced the faot that ho has a good eye and a long head, and If he had an axe to grind, from all appearances, he succeeded very well. %? The Democratic party Is by no means dead. Advices from Washington would Indicate that the campaign this fall In several States will be the hottest in many years. The leading Democratic members of the house aro busily en gaged In making preparations for tho coming contests. Just now there seems to be much dissension In the Rupubli ean camps. A strong and growing low tariff element in tbo West and North West threatens to cut looso from tho high tariff faction of the East. Then there is a general and increasing dislike to the Administration's policy towards the Philippines and a distrust ful sentiment in regard to the Trusts. It sooms that the Democrats hope to profit by this family row, and tho sen timent which they claim Is advorse to the party in power. The Republican majority, they assert, will be easily converted Into a minority. This po litical prognostication may be all right, but there's many "slip twixt cup and Hp." Whon the big bosses call on the voters to rally around the G. O. P. standards, and somo coin of tho realm Is scattered around In places of vantage to aid in tho harmonizing scheme,all conflicting Interostsare rele gated to the rear, and the party as sumes a solid phalanx. ? * * Tho last few days, veritable Spring weather, wo takn as hera'ding the balmy days to come. Cathcart In Laurens regret that it was not in their power to help him yester day In his contest for the mayoralty of Columbia. The visit of the Crown Prince to this country was for a time nearly over shadowed by the Tillman-McLaurln Incidont. Public interest in the latter having subsided, the Prlnco Is moro than ever on the National horizon. He is undergoing a course In dining and wining with the multi-millionaires of New York. Andrews. Newborry Observer. One of the best men I have evor known was Jno. K, Andrews. Ho was born in L*urens County, noar Belfast, iu 1842, and died at the borne of hla brother SValter, noar Chappell's Depot, January 80th, 1002. He was among tho first who volun teered for the Confederate service in Company E, Third South Carolina, and remained in service till the end. It is said by ono who knows that he was in every battlo in which his company was engaged. Ho was ulways well, always ready and never behind-hand in the Performance of duty, lie was certainlj a bravo soldier. Ho wa9 also a fnitbful soldier of the Cross. In early life be was baptized into fellowship of the Bush JRivor Church in Newborry County by that noble man of Qod, Thos. II Pope. As his pastor for a number of years I re member how punctual bo was in atten dance upou the services of bis church; how ready always to perform h!s duty. Ho always impressed mo as a man without guile, self-forgetful, never self assuming, sympathetic, courage ous, patient and faithful in the dis charge of duty. Ho was a man of fow words, but of real worth. Ho was never married, but preferred to devoto his life to the caro of his widowed mother and his s'st rs. His was a peaceful lifo, interrupted for a moment by death only, but which now Hows on in a deeper und wider stream In tho world beyond.
