Tamilian) Tamed. In last Tuesday's election Tammany, the Democracy, of Greater New York was badly beaten after seventy years control of tho city. Republicans, dis affected Democrats and Independents fused, calling themselves reformers and won. But as a fact it was a Re publican victory. They denounced the city as a modern Babylon, and cried aloud for purity. All great oitios are Babylons. But wo will see what we will see. Tho chances are ten to one that in two years thoro will be a clamor for Croaker and Tammany. A fox torrl bly worriod and torn by tho dogs lay by the bank of a stroam, a swarm of files sucking his blood. A wayfaring friond proposed to drive them off, but he said no, that tho pack upon him wore about satiated, and drlvon off, a fresh swarm hungry and thirsty would sei/.o upon and suck the last drop of his blood. **# Short Corn Crop. Tho short corn crop in this State for 1001, is not attributable to tho want of rain, but to big rains that fell a half dozen timos in tho Spring and early Summer, sweeping awav in a Hood, the numerous plantings. The destruction of the forests and tho denuding of tho bills and up-lands of vegetation is the cause of tno fierce rush of waters to tho low-lands upon a not immoderate pre cipitation. Tho prevailing system per sisted in will have the result of con verting our low-lands into vast swamps and jungles, with here and there fine grass and pasturo lands. And thus cattle and wool may becomo staples amongst us in tho near future, and an nihilate tho dominion of King Cotton. Sowing broad acres of the uplands in small grain in the Fall and Winter months would bo a partial corrective, cheoking tho sudden rush of waters in an irresistible Hood. * * * The Exposition. Tho impression in the Slate is now well established, that the Exposition is not so much for Charleston as tho Slate, the South and the country. And tho feeling strongly pervades the peo ple of the State to make it a success and particularly for the helping up of the State. V It appears now that soldlors in the late Spanish war may reeoivo a bonus, under an old Act of Congress, which will bo quito advantageous to them. Those of this State honorably dis charged, who did not go to Cuba, will receive $100; those who served in Cuba ?100. Soldiers may communicate with W. Boyd Evans, Esq., Columbia. #% Wise and Pickens Townships, Edge field, are in the same category with Sullivan Township as to a special Rail road Tax. The Comptroller General asked advice of Attorney General Bel linger, who, in an opinion, says that the Comptroller has only to see that the State and County taxes are col lected. The Charleston Exposition will be opened with prayer, Dr. Ramsay of the Citadel Square Baptist Church, and Bishop Ellison Capers of the Episcopal Church officiating. It is a new depar ture in tho history of Expositions. * * Keo9tor has appointed Murray, col ored, and ex-Congressman of George town, to be Deputy Rovenuo Collector. After a long silence we will endeavor to givo you some of the happenings in our llttlo village. Mrs. Bessie West after spending sev eral weeks among friends and relatives at this place, has returned to her homo at Uuion. Mrs. Will R. Owinga, of Port Valley, Oa., is visltng her aunt, Mrs. J, D. Johnson. Mr. aud Mrs. J. D. Johnson visited Laurens Tuesday on a shopping expe dition. Our little town seems to be on quite a boom at present, and the saw and hamm >r can be heard in every direc tion. ? Mr. J. V. Cooley has his residence al most completed. Mr. J. D. Johnson will have his house ready for the paint brush in a few days. Mr. C. L. Wal drop has made a considerable addition to bis already commodious store room, and Mr. J. M. Fleming is now doing likewise. Mr. J. E. Johnson has re sumed work on his dwelling and hopes to be ready to move in soon. Several houses for the storage of cotton seed have been built here th<<< Fall. Mr. J. W. Lanford seems to be get ting hl9 share of the cotton to gin. Will toon have 600 bales. Mrs. Lena Mooro has moved to Lau rens where she will llvo with hor son in-law, Mr. John C Shell. We learn that Mr. E. II. Mooro will move Into our town in a few days. Tho farmers aro very busy picking cotton, sowing grain and raising po tatoes. A few days ago a whirlwind passed through Mr. William Jennlng'a cotton patch and stopped at a large sheet of cotton and certainly made the cotton fly. Somo of It was blown many feet high and the ground for 10 foet square w ts covered with cotton, it looked like a now storrn whilo it lasted. Perhaps it is a good sign that price of cotton will "go up." Haynle Blakely the little son of Mr. T. R. Blakely with several other chil dren were playing in tho cotton house digging holes down into the cotton, Haynie dug a very deep hole and when reaching down to get another handful ho fell head downward into the hole. He was there for sometime unable to get out until ho was discovered to be unconclous. But when taken out into the air and given good attention he soon recovered and is allright now. Mr. and Mrs. James Sloan, of Spar tanburg, visited Mr. J. P. Sloan's family last week Misses Lillie Hairston and Estelle Weathers visited Mr. M. A. Sumerel'a family one night last week. Prizes shall bo award ed for tho best crop on live acres, three acres and one acre, to wit; l&JO.OO first prize on live acres; $20.00 second prizo on tivo acres; $20.00 first prizo on threo acres; $15.00 second prizo on threo acres; $15.00 first prizo on one acre; $10.00 second prize on 1 aero. Rule 2. Tho land entered for tho prizes must be measured by two compotout disinterested persons, who shall certify to same. Rulo 3. Tho grain shall be cut and shocked in the presence of two disinterested witnesses who shall make certificate of same. Rulo 4. A certified statement from two disinterested witnesses of tho number of bushels thresh ed; tho whoat to bo dry and niorsuucd by weight. Rulo 5."
