The-Alumni of this noble old State
Institution will celobrate Its Centenlal
at Charleston during the Imposition,
on the 19thof December. It was char
tered by Act of tho General Assembly
1801.
Hundrods of its graduates havo been
distinguished In the history of tho
Stato. Among theso Laurens has a
prominont place In making history. In
theclassof 1312 was Beaufort T.Watts,
Secretary of State, and Forolgn Minis
ter; in 1810 James H. Irby, Lelut. Gov
ernor: Richard F. Simpson, Congress
man; In 1810 Franklin IL Elmore,
United States Senator; In 1828 Robort
H. Speers, Stato Reporter; In 1848
William D. Simpson, Lieut. Govornor,
momber Confederato Congress and
Chief Justice oi the State; in 1845,
Robort Garllngton, College Professor;
1847, James Farrow, Confederate Con
gressman; in 1841, Samuel McGowan,
Associate Justice Supreme Court.
Many others of tho sons of Laurens
have roachod positions of honor and
trust In civil life, and served tho Stato
with distinction In war. Tho ante-war
history of tho College is an ample his
tory of the Stato.

A call has been made for the taking
of $75,000 of Laurons County Bouds to
refund, thatamountof bonds maturing
this fall and bearing 7 per cent.
Supervisor Drummond thinks tho
new issue will bo taken ut 4 per. cent.
The $15,000 have been previously re
funded at H. Of tho $150,000 Sixty
Thousand Dollars will remain outstand
ing at 7 per cent.
Those will not be long in maturing
and will bo floated at 4 per cent. The
saving will bo about $4,500 in interest
annually.
A sinking fund Act should be pro
vided at once looking to tho gradual!
reduction and payment of the debt, and [

The entire community sympathize
with Rev. J. K. McCain in the death of
his son, Dr. Arthur MoCain, formerly
surgoon in the United States Army in
Cuba, who died in New York city last
week.
Mr. John McCain, of Columbia, and
Frank McCain, Esq . of Yorkvllle, vis
ited their father and family hero this
Mrs. Elizaboth Dorroh and daughter
MissSallle Dorroh, of Greenvillo, vis
ited at Mrs. Susan Dorroh's last week.
It was good to see these two aged la
dles meet. Thoy had not seen each
other for several years, and Mrs. Eliza
both Dorroh'a visit was unoxpected.and
when they shook hands Mrs. Susan
Dorroh said "I have just boon thinking
of you many tlmos to-day"
Mr. J. E. Burtiside took tho train
hero Monday morning for his homo In
Greenville. He had boon on a visit to
his mother, Mrs. Emily Burnndo, of
Youngs.
Mr. D. D. Feden is building, guess
he will have the bird roady by tho time
tho cage is finished.
Mr. C. R. Bishop has bought tho
Coleman house.
Mr. C. O. Whltoeldo and family are
going to movo to Elberton, Ga., in a
short time.
Tho cotton is opening slow and the
crop Is going to bo short.
The people aro making use of this
fino weather in taking up their sweot
potatoes; of which there Is a good crop.
Two of our nolghbors, Sam B. and
Sam W., aro great o'possum hunters,
havo caught about 40 this season. They
complain that thoy aro not fat; tho
Doctor says: "no wondor thoy are poor
Sam and Sam huut thorn so continu
ously that tbey do not give thorn timo
to get anything to eat."

Laurens at WofTord College.
Some counties have a good num
ber of students at WofTord, while oth
ers have a few. Laurens is not al
ways in the lead, but she generally
has a few. She has some who claim
WolTord as their alma mater, of whom
she is very proud. Laurens is always
loyal to her good cause. She lias
only a few in WolTord this year.?
Out of about one hundred and seventy
from this and neighboring states, with
two or three from a distance, Laurens
has eight. This is in the college, and
not including the Fitting School.?
There are about sixty there.
The following are the eight from
Laurens. They all belong to the
Preston Literary Society, except the
last two. I believe they are all mem
bers of the Young's Men's Christian
Association. They represent all the
classes, except the'Sophomore. They
are: Mr- Paul H, Nash, of Clinton,
and Mr. Robert E. Sharp, of Eri, ill
the Senior class; Mr. W. YV. Boyd, of
Goldville? and Mr. I. E. Curry, of
Rapley, in the Junior class. Then
there are four Freshmen: Mr. J. A.
Roland, of Laurens, Mr. Haskell
Dial, of Laurens, Mr. S. W. Puckett,
of Waterloo, and Mr. 0. B. Leonard,
of Jachin.
Each one of these boys stands very
well in college. To show how they
hold their own, we might mention
the following facts: Mr. Nash has
been treasurer of the Literary Society.
Mr. Sharp is Vice-President of the Y.
M. C. A., and 1st critic In the Literary
Society. Mr. Boyd has just comple
ted a term of Recording Secretaryship
in the Literary Society. Mr. Curry
was elected as a speaker in the com
petitive work for the representative
at the oratorical contest. Mrs. Dial is
President of his class. The offices
and honors are not open to the Fresh
men as to others, but these others
stand well in their class. They bid
fair to give Laurens county men rea
son to rejoice for having sent their
sons to WofTord,
