Tho census of this city us announced,
inakcB our population 4,020. Of course
we think that there is some mistake.
But this was to be expected. Wo had
guessed at 1,500. As it Is, we have a
gain of 7? per cent, in the last dc- -do.
Greenwood, Newberry and Union all
lead us. <)f cities under 20,000 wo are
15th. After Charleston, Columbia has
21,108, Greenville 11,100, Spartan
burg 11.300, Anderson, Union, Hook
llill and Suinter passing tho 5,000
mark. The comparison may still bo
unfavorable to us as our corporate
limits are extended U miles, radiating
from the Court House. We can do
better next time if our young men do
their duty.

The assessing and collecting taxes
is done in the same year, and we have
to aggregate the number and value of
all horses, mules, cattle and other
piecos of personal property, as well as
the acres of land, lots and buildings
and their value that there are. in this
county, and have the same on tile in
the Comptroller General's ofilce by the
:ioth of June of each year, and from
that time to the lirst day of October
the Auditor's and Treasurer's dupli
cate have to be completed and an ab
stract of the work in the Comptroller
General's office by that time, which
will show at a glance that the Auditor
has no time to take returns, or any
thing else much, between the 1st day
of October, but work on tho books and
the blanks. We hope, therefore, that
all taxpayers will make their returns
in time.
