of > ndorson county was attentive to
Miss Alice Shearer. As Popper was a
little slow in his movements the big

"Witherspoon decided against Pepper,
not on tho merits, but on the ground
that the Court had no jurisdiction of
the person and rights of Mrs. Allco
she residing in a foreign jurisdiction.
Pepper has appealed to our Supremo
Court. It Is an interesting question,
and the decision will be awaited with
anxiety. It would soom but just that
Pepper should havo his shackles
loosened. But our Court Is very old fash
ioned and conservative (when there Is
no politics in tho case) and it is pro
bable that they will make the marriage
stick fpr fear of opening tho doors to
Other frauds. It would be possible to
have many of those forced contracts,
where peppery parties get together
and become tired of the ''bargain "

A Dangerous Character.
Old man Henderson, Tom Hender
son, Will Henderson, his sons, and
one John W. Jay, sot upon ? John Buz
zard at Saluda C. IL, on Saturday, tho
28th of November and with pistols,
stones and shot guns managed to mur
der him. The details of tho assault
are sickening and would dlegrace by
their cowardly foaturos the lowest of
human oreaturos. The savage fea
tures of barbarism are usually re
deemed by tho virtuoof courage. Tho
assailants will probably provo that Buz
zard was a dangorous man and there
fore deserved death at their hands.
It would not be surprising also if the
Hendersons and Jay didn't bring a
swarm of witnesses to swear that Buz
zard had threatened them and all the
neighborhood with death for tho last
years, while they still went peacefully
about their business. The tender
mercies of the murderers of Culbreath
at Edgefleld and the cultured Broxton
Bridge heroes are recalled. We only
refer to those brutalities that they
may be made shocking to tho good
people of this State in the hope of a
remedy.
Congress met on yesterday and heard
Mr. Cleveland's message upon tho
State of the country. Tt will probably
be in tho nature of an annual rovlow
and suggest no trenchant or radical
legislation. As we havo before sug
gested nothing may be expected of
this Congress, but perfunctory legisla
tion in the nature of appropriations.
The Congress dies on tho 4th of March.
Any relief legislation must come after
that date and unless McKinley re
solves upon an extra session Congress
stands adjourned until December 1807.
We believe that an extra session may
be expected, resulting upon the chronic
defioionoy in the finances of the gov
ernment. Otherwise there must be
some awful skillful financiering. Tho
republicans may, however, adopt the
waiting do-nothing policy of the Demo
crats, which has demolished them, and
the country must wait tho flnanolal re
lief legislation urgontly demanded to
restore confidence and consequent pros
perity. The country anxiously awaits
what Mr. Cleveland has to say.

vance of 75 per cent, in four months.?
Failure of the crop In India and other
countries accounts for the rise. Supply
and demand. This, notwithstanding
the gold standard. Cotton remains
stationary. This because, tho crop just
harvested is a million bales over the
August estimate and good crops in the
cotton producing countrios. Southern
farmers are woll to do who produce
"~thetr provisions, corn, whoat, hogs,
and molasses. But cotton Is not to bo
repudiated. A crop of seven millions
will give a ten cent price. But flftoon
million bales can bo made.*

H. Pendleton, Senator from Ohio and
Minister to Germany. Col. Abnoy Is a
son of Edgefleld, was Solicitor of that
Circuit during Hampton's administra
tion, removed to Now York, where he I
has become a leading momber of tho
bar, is president of the New York
Southern Association and soolally
prominent. The Abneys in this Stato
have been forward in war and ear nod
prominence in peace. Col. Abney's
many friends in South Carolina will
rejoice at his good fortune.

Spartanburg caso that "Magistrates"
are not without jurisdiction. Judge
Earlo decided adversely at Barn well,

The House of Representatives In
Laurens County is maintaining her
reputation remarkably well. John
Miller, colored, killed Spencer Simp
son, a white farmer near Clinton and
hid the body out In a swamp. After it
had been there several days a search
ing party found it. They arrested
Miller and ho confessed to the killing,
but gave as his excuse that Simpson
was too intimate with his wife. In tho
Goldville section of the county some
house burning has been done recontly
and there Is considerable excltomont

I am glad to say she is better.

Mrs. Eliza Fuller went over to
Clinton last Saturday on business.
Capt. Jarnos Hudgens of Madden
and son Walter came through here
on their way home from While

Dr. F. G. Fuller got a nice lot of
hogs from Tennesseolho other day.
The snow camo and caught

the way of wood, but I guess we

Last Tuesday was a great day
for hog killing and you can imag
ine how somo of us will eat spare

Mr. L. C. Wharton has gone up

High School.
Mr. A. J. Smith will be on the
roud in a few days with some fine
Tennessee hogs at 4 1-2 cents.

will live in the house he moved
from.
The farmers have been sowing
wheat since the election for they
seo that President-elect McKinley
did not advance the price of cot
ton and they can't raise cotton at
6 and 7 cents and pay $5.00 to
$5.50 per barrel for flour and many
other things at the same ratio and
if Bryan had been elected wo poor
devils would have had to work
just the sumo and J have made up
my mind to make all that I can at
homo to live off of, for lifo is too
short to fret aud worry over as to
who shall be President of these
United States. Remember poor
farmers It doesn't make any differ
ence who gets tho offices you and
all of us will keep pulling tho boll
