In tho spring of 1805, I commenced foodlng a lot of young pigs with a ra tion of ono measure of cotton sood meal, two of corn, and four of whoat bran well wet with water, and allowed to stand twenty-four hours before using. I thon added enough more to make a thin gruol and fed it at once. On this ration, with the run of an orchard, I never had pigs to do hotter. Tents were struck at 7 o'clock on Sat urday morninK and the soldier laddies axe by this time cultivating the sweet and delightful arts of peace. Their stay in the city wss mneh enjoyed by our citizens. We trust that their experience will be recalled as a pleasant snd profita ble one. It was indeed no child play? the officers giving the soldiers plenty of hard work to do. There were four com panies present?the Morgan Rifles, of Clifton, Lieut. Byrd; the Pea Ridge Ri fles, of Union. Cspt. Otts; Gary Watts Guards, of Maddens, Cspt. J. M. Dean snd the Laurens Guards, Cspt Lock wood Great zeal was shown by the officers and men and wonderful improvement made in the short period of one week's drill. The presence of Lieutenant Stokes, of tho United States Army, a most ac complished young officer, added greatly to the sncceBS of the encampment and his presence in tho city greatly onjoyed. Lieutenant Stokes comes from West Point, the National Military School and he is now stationed in this State. Ho is a native of thin State, Hampton county. In case of war's rude alarms this dash ing young officer will be heard from. Lieutenants Guignard, Hagood, Curwin were in camp assisting in the exercises. They are all three just grad uated from West Point, the two first named of Columbia, the last of Now York, and the guost of the first named. On Friday last tho companies were in spected in front of the Bendella Hotel by Adjutant General Watts assisted by Col. George S. McOravy, of the Gov ernor's staff. In a short speech the Ad jutant General complimented the sol diers upon their appearance and bearing. In tho company contest the Pea Ridge Rifles had no easy victory over the de tachment representing the Morgan Ri fles. At the Opera House on Friday night the contest for the best drilled man in the manual of arms was severe and en joyed by a large audience. After a se vere struggle the victory was awarded and the laurel given to Sergeant Sonley, of Morgan Rifles, first, and Sergeant Gait of Pea Ridge Rifles second. Lieu tenant Stokes and Adjutant Moorman, of Clemson being judges. Tho visiting officers and men desiro to have ex pressed their appreciation to our citizens for courteses and attontion. At the conclusion of tho drill on Friday evening the prizos wore delivorod to the victors by the Hon. L. W. Simkins in suitably eloquent expressions. The admirable conduct of the two Laurens companies, officers and men deserve the highest commendation. With proper encour agement of the citizens they will do cre dit to tho Statos uniform. WITHDRAWAL CARD. With two candidates from Laurens County for the Solicitorship of the 7th Judicial Circuit, I have reached the conclusion that the election of either is highly improbable. I have, therefore, determined to withdraw from the can vass. In doing so, I wish to express my thanks to friends who have given me words of cheer, and assure them that I look to the future for an opportunity to prove to them that I merit the encour agement that I have received. Benefits of Coarse MarurE. ?When coarse manure is spread on the soil, the benefits are not re ceived until the next season, as it is necessary for the substances composing: the manure to thor oughly decompose before they can become available; therefore the manuro heap of this year is really the preparing of the plant food for next season. When fresh manure, however, is .spread on the land, and been worked into the soil with a cultivator, it may be ready for use before the crop matures, and thus assist in filling out the grain, but any coarse material in the manure will remain in the ground until next year. The soil absorbs and holds ammonia, thus preventing loss, and especially if the manure is intimately incorporated with the soil. The amount of rainfall and warmth will also affect the de composition of manure in the soil, while lime also assists in hastening its conversion into plant food. It is necessary when using manure to keep in view the fact that it must be in proper condition to immedi ately Hupply the plants with availa ble material for growth. C, went to Liborla in 1871, and now owns three stores and 1500 acres of land, on which latter he raises coffee and ginger. Ho is on a visit to his old homo. He is pleased with Liberia and has no wish to re turn. Along with other things ho said: "Crimo is punished surely and swiftly and murderers are generally hanged. It was groatly desired by their friends that antagonism at home should he avoidod. Considering that the prospects of both wero im perilled, Mr, Featherstone with a most fluttering prospect in tho contest, pub lishes a withdrawal in this issue of The Advertiser. Laurens now has but one candidate tor the office of Solicitor and without disparaging the other worthy gentlemen who aspire to the position wo are safe in saying that the interest of the District Judicial affairs can be safely left in the hands of that able and con scientious gentleman, Col. We forgot to state in our last lo cal that Mr. W. A. Blakely has beon visiting relatives at Ora. Quite a number of the young peo ple of Ora attended children's day at Bethany. After the exercises were over the Ora boys crossed bats with the Gross Anchor nine in a very exciting game of ball. Tho game was called for five innings and ended with a scoreofslxto five in favor of Ora. Quito a large crowd witnessed the game. Some of the Ora people attended a pionie at Enoree on the 29th ult., which was enjoyed very much. Messrs. William Bryson and Jajnes G. Nabors havo their resi dences uonnected by telephone which they And to be very con venient. We hear that Ora is to be con nected by telephone with Laurens. This is what we havo been needing for along time. Mr. Nat Wallace thinks he has n novel way of dismounting his wheel while riding fast, but is not at all pleased with the results. Rev. Littlejohn began the regu lar protracted mooting at Warrior Greek church the fourth Sabbath of July. The house was well filled Sabbath. Mi.ss Moggie Dillnrd, of Tylers vilio is visiting Mrs. O. L. Hunter. Mr. John Dillard passed through Ora on his wheel Thursday. Miss Nannie Thompson attended the convention at Welford. Dr. 8. F. Blakely is spending sev eral dnya with his mother, Mrs. Sallie Blakoly. Dr. Blakely is now practicing at Hickory Grove. We notice some open cotton in Mr. A. Y. Thompson'* field. It will .soon be time to gather the fleecy staple. B. Ringing Resolutions. At a regular meet ing of Leesville Alliance, Saturday, August 1, the following resolutions were passed unanimously : Whereas, The Alliance was'or ganized for the protection of the tillers of the soil against the un just encroachment of monopolies and combines, and to further our interests socially and financially ; and whereas, the hydra-headed monster has again shown his hand in the form of tho cotton-tie trust, thus advancing the price of cotton ties ninety-five per cent , from last year's price? Resolved, 1st , That wo the mem bers of Leesville Alliance will not use any cotton ties at an advance from last year's price. Resolved, 2nd, That we earnest ly solicit the aid of all who do not favor the levying of a hundred fold tribute to bo paid to tho North ern Shylooks by the tillers of the cotton fields of the South. Resolved, 8rd, That we respect fully ask the merchants of the county not to buy cotton ties at an advanced price and thus assist the yeomany of the country with the motto, "Equal rights to all and special privileges to none."
