At this juncture when Laurens is
undergoing a great business revival
her people should take advantage of
this opportunity and advertisers ought
to doal liberally with Mr. Norment
and the News and Courier.
Ten thousand copies at the least of
the Issue containing the article should

Tho editor of this paper had the for
tune to pass through fifteen miles of
Laurens territory in a private convey
ance during last week. The route lay
along the old Greenville road to Capt.
Shells and thence up tho Ralbon, and
over the hills as far as Dials church.?
The crops on tho entire way are fair to
good oxcept on sandy rldgo lands
where they are light. The corn is un
iformly good aud the land groaning
with peas ripo for tho sickle. The pea
crop is a wonder. The fields are snowy
with cotton, and the far mors say thoy
can't stop to tri He with peas and nine
cents cotton hanging from tho bolls?
Wo observed particularly the crops of
Mr. James Bolt, Hugh Wallace, Glenn
Fuller, Capt. John Switzer, David Har
ris, Piorce Hellams, Taylor Campbell,
John Heliums, .Esq., and many oth
ers. It was tho 10th of October, but
tho orchard of Mr. James Bolt, with a
half dozen trees loaded with beauti
ful peaches, and tho eloquence of our
road companions, L. G. B & W. H. B.
was too much for our integrity and a
syndicate was formed to raid the pro
serves; but fortuately the hospitable
proprietor was at home, and with bin
assistance we returned with overflow
ing baskots. We found many of these
industrious whole soulded farmers look
ing after their sorghum and every man
with his hand to the plow. They are
a happy, independent, intelligent,
thriving people. Wo were about to for
get to mention that the twenty acre
cotton Hold of Hugh Wallace on the
road side Is tho talk and admiration of
all beholders. Tho more we see of our
people at their own hospitable homes
tho loss we are inclined towards tho
now county Idea and our Abbeville and
Spartanburg nolghbors might as well

Supervisor Adair is having needed
work in tho way of building done by
the county convicts, which wo think is
wisdom on his part and proves that he
is the right man in tho right place.
It seems that brave, brainy Ben Till
man has to pop his whip pretty often to
got tho wholo convention to say "Aye."

Mr. Jessie Puller sustained considera
ble loss the other day by getting a bale
of cotton on lire at E. M. Cuningham's

The Winthrop College illngs wide its

On Sunday evening at about oight
o'clock the cry of fire was heard and
an out building at Mr. S. I). G a Is
lington's was found to be on lire
inside. The house wa*> filled with lint
cotton. With prompt, assistance from
town the fire w?3 put out and but
comparatively little stir was made ovor
the matter. The origin of tho fire Is
unknown.
The business men and morchants of
tho town havo an organization and will
have a cotton buyor on tho markot
hereafter. Thoy aro not anxious to
buy cotton, but they aro dotorminod to
do their host to secure a square market
for our chief staple and do all they can
to keep tho scales rlghty adjusted.?
Besides, competition is the life of trado
and the more tho merrier.
There was an unpleasant condition
of the cotton market for a few hours
on Saturday, with no buyers and more
than a hundred bales on tho markot.
There was some hitch about tho scales
and the weighing. Soon, howover, the
deadlock was broken and tho market
went on in its oven tonor. Wo trust
that there will be no furthor hitch as
our buyers aro a liberal sot of gentle
men and we know that our cotton rais
ers want nothing moro than tho worth
of their products and bosides must
largely trust to the good faith of tho
buyers and weighers. Wo aro au
thorized to state furthor that tho buy
ers aro porfoctly satisfied with the
scales.
John William Yoargln, a prominent
farmer died at his home noar Gray
Court in this county on Wodnosday
morning last. While ongaged in a well
some weeks ago a dislodged stono foil
upon his hoad and although tho injnry
was sovoro, his friends hopofully ex
pected an oarly recovery from tho In
jury. He was In his thirty-fifth year
and leaves a widow and young children
to mourn tholr Irroparablo loss. His
funeral was preached at Dial's church
by the Rev. J. W. Shell on tho follow
ing day, and his remains tnkon charge
of oy Schroder Lodgo of which he was
a member and burled with masonic
honors In tho prosonco of a great as
sembly of rolativos, noighbors and
friends.
Dr. G. L. Martin, ono of tho best
known physicians In this and Laurons
counties will move his family to Sonocn,

Martin has boon actively engagod In

We find the ropairing of tho jail has
been done, and all quarters thereabouts
clean and nicely kept.
Wo also lind the roof on Court House
has been put in good condition. Tho
almshouse is now under repair, and in
a few days will bo nice and comfortable.
Paupors^ twelve in number, seem all
to b3 doing as well as could be expected.
Wo havo had an export to go through
tho books in tho different County offi
ces and find thorn all In good shape and
nicely kept.
Wo. the Grand Jury, havo recom
mended, from court to court, that all'
streams In the countv bo cleaned out.
but through gross carelessness od tho
part of the land owners along tho dif
ferent streams, mueh complaint has
boon mado to this body.
Wo therefore recommend tho Super
visor to givo them Thirty (30) days af
ter tho expiration of said timo, and all
failing to comply with tho law, must
bo prosecuted at oneo and without fur
ther notice, or else we, tho Grand Jury,
will prosocutp tyho Supervisor.
wo further recommend that the Su
pervisor be allowed an inspector, to go
over tho different streams after the ex
piration of tho said thirty (30) days,
and roport to him their condition.
Wo also recommend that tho said
Inspector be paid out of tho County
funds.
We rocoinmond that tho Clerk of
Court bo furnished with one hundred
tin boxes for preservation of records;
also School Commissioner twenty-five.

overseers bo made to work out the full
term of six days, as required by law.

Atlanta. This great system reaches
Atlanta from all four points of the
compass, stretching ' o%t its im
mense arms to the Potomac at
Washington, ami the Ohio River
gateways at. Cincinnati, Louisville,
St. liouis, Memphis, Vicksburg and
New Orleans, and reaching down
into the interior of Florida and
penetrating in a network the en
tire Southern States, it brings di
rectly into tho gates of Atlanta
trade and travel from all quarters
of the globe.
The Southern Railway being the
only line of transportation enter
ing tho exposition grounds, it has
undertaken to proudly assert its re
cognition of this great responsibil
ty, and lias provided the most am
ple and accommodating terminal
facilities, both at Lloyd Street Sta
tion , adjoining the Markharn
House, and Immediately opposite
the Union Depot in t Ii im city, and
also at the grounds of the exposi
tion itself.
The Southern Railway has ar
ranged a system ol quick train ser
vice between the eity and the
grounds such as the South has
never witnessed. These trains are
arranged so as to be run within
three minutes of-eaeh other, and
afford a total carrying capacity of
20,000 an hour in each direction, or
a total movement in one hour of
10,000 people should necessities re
quire.
Vice President Baldwin has im
bued his entire staff of .subordinates
with a spirit of energy and enter
prise in this undertaking that is
bound to make it the most success
ful of tho kind ever known.
The passenger department of
tho Southern Railway has issued
extensive and beautiful advertis
ing matter of original and effective
sort, and has participated very
largely in the effort so successfully
resulting In arranging tho lowest
rates upon the most liberal basis
for the Atlanta Exposition ever af
forded any Exposition of this kind
in tho world.
The frieght department has lent
similiar aid and enterprise in pro
viding for tho movement of
tho exhibits, and indeed the
watchword throughout tho entire
Southern Railway system seems to
be "Tho Atlanta Exposition must
be an ovorwhlltning success."
The transportation department of
the southern Railway is doubtless
as well officered as any railway in
I he United States. Most ample and
extensive train service has been
arranged by the transportation de
partment to bring everybody from
everywhere to Atlanta on this
