The suicidal mania appears to have
struek the town. Two of tho colored
population endeavored to mako away
with themselves last week, but were
discovered in time to bo resuscitated.
The mothods of doparturo chosen were
laudanum in one case and hanging in
tho other.
Mr. W. M. McCaslan and family who
have for tho past sevon years made
their home In our midst removed on
Saturday last to Clinton. Their de
parture has caused deep regret among
thoir numerous friends, and the good
wishes of tho entire community follow
them into their new homo.
A mule driven to a buggy by Mr.
Steven Robertson, near Thomas' being
frightened, overturned tho vehicle
upon Mr. Robertson, Mrs. Robertson
and little daughter of Mr. John Duvall.
Mr. Robertson was severely injured,
but we trust ho will soon bo out of dan
ger. The other occupants escaped
without serious injury.
The western side of the square is be
ing somewhat renovated. Paint is be
ing freely administered to Mr. J. H.
Traynham's block and Davis, Roper &
Co. appear to bo indulging in ondless
sets of new shelves as woll as various
other improvements by which a larger
stock of goods than over brought on
before can be displayed.
Wc are glad to chronlelo the removal
to the city precincts of Mr. L. E. Burns
and family. Mr. Burns intends open
ing out an extensive lino of goods in
tho storo occupied until tho recent
Bon-Delia fire by H. Terry & Co. The
building is at present bolng repaired

Miss Lydio frby entertained the
members of the Bon Ton Club and a
unmoor of other friends most delight
fully on Wednesday evening. Besides

Capt. Jno. E. Butler, of Rolling
Fork, Miss., is visiting relatives in
this and adjoining communities. Capt.
Butler was born and raised in Laurcns
county and many of his old friends as
woll as relatives aro glad to welcome
him back to tho home of his boyhood.
Mr. B. A. Bolt's school at Rocky
Mount closed Friday.
Miss Ada Turner, of Cross Hill, is
visiting relatives in our community'.

ing relatives in Owingsvillo.
Crops aro needing rain and farmers
now seem to bo of tho opinion that
they will not bo so line as was expected
some time ago.

Cedar Grove.
An unfortunato dillleulty on the pub
lic road near here occurred last Wed
nesday morning at about half-past
sevon o'clock. One, Berry Parks, col
ored, bogan by cursing the overseer
Mr. Perry N. Thompson; to avoid a
dillleulty and have no trouble the over
seer dismissed the hands for that day
and told tho offender not to return to
tho road again. Next day notwith
standing this warning the negro re
turned, and the trouble of tho previ
ous day was renewed and the ovorseer
struck tho aforesaid Berry Parks,
over the head inflicting a verry serious
though not necessarily fatal wound.
Tho wounded negro has had the best
of surgical attention by Dr. Parson, of
Woodruff, who thinks he will recover
if he receives good nursing and proper
attention. The negroes are Hocking
in for several mile? around to see him.
All are quiet and orderly, and no trou
ble is apprehended. Should the ne
gro dio Mr. Thompson will immediately
deliver himself to the Sheriff.
