Tho young ladios then donnod tho hats thus giving riso to much laughter, until thoy woro all colloctod and judged in order that tho young man who had constructed tho most stylish hat should havo a prize awarded him for his taste and industry. Mr. Ashmoro Davis was accordingly presented with the first prize, a beautiful scarf pin and Mr. John Bowon with a mirror, his hat having outstripped a number of contestants for tho booby. Lator on dancing began and so passed ono of the most delightful ovonlngs that Laurons has known. Standing room was barely obtalnablo at tho Opera House on Tuesday ovon ing whoro an interested audlonco had gathorod to witness tho closing exor cises of tho Graded School. Tho program conslstod mainly of tho reading of ossays by tho graduat ing class, and music by tho pupils of tho music class. Tho graduating ossays woro all worthy of praise and showed a most unusual amount of thought and study for such young minds. Garrett's pupils and Master Billio Irby, a member of Miss Nannio Mc Caslau's class rendered instrumental solos upon tho piano, which were ro ceivod with woll deserved applause and tho audience was fairly captivated by a duet by Mtssos Lilian Jamioson and Ursula Childross, two of the little ones of tho first grade. Dr. W. P. Jacobs, of tho Thornwoll Orphanage dolivored an address, in structive, forciblo and full of humor to tho graduating class and thon tho ovoning came to an end with tho dis tribution of the diplomas and a few closing remarks from tho Superinten dent, Mr. H. Reports come of groat distress among white people on the Beaufort coast of this State resulting from tho disastrous storm of last autumn. It Is charged that the great fund dlsponsed by tho Red Cross Society was almost exclusively given to negroes. W. C. Floming, M. D., a colored man living about three, miles from town mot with a sorlous misfortune on tho ovonlng of Monday tho 14th instant. During a storm his barn was struck by lightning and burned to tho ground together with all its contents. A vory valuable horse was also struck and killed at tho samo time. Mr. H. L. Scaifo, who has boon tho Superintendent of the olty schools du ring the past session roturned to his homo In Union on Thursday. Mr. Scaife besides doing a great deal for tho advancement of tho schools has made numbers of personal friends in Laurens who regret tho summer holi days In as much as It has brought about his departure. Tho two beneficiaries which Laurons county is entitled to at tho citadel will be vacant the coming term and there, will bo eight scholarships, as wo stated in last week's issue, at tno Peabody In stitute belonging to the State at large. The competitive, examinations for trio places at the citadel will bo hold here, those for the Peabody Institute at Co lumbia. M. .Johnson had the misfor tune of loosing a mule on last Tuesday, which fell and broke its neck. Miss Lizzie Lanford also lost a nice mule last week. Mr. B. A. Martin who lias boon lan guishing on a bod of sufforing for quite a while, died last Saturday, and was hur ried on Sunday by tho Masonic brothers at tho family burying ground. Cooper's lust Sunday. The health of our community is not very good at this writing. Mrs. Jano Knight lias been very ill for somo time but we are glad to state at this writing she is much better. Mr. B. J. Culbertson and Miss Lottie Culbertson attended the anniversary at Clinton. Trip has boon sick for a. few days, but is now able to nice., with his friends again. Mrs. Pollio Knight departed this life May tho 10th, 189 i. We have been intimate with her for several years and know hor to bo a Christian woman. All that knew her loved her for sho was kind to all. Wo feel vory sad over the death of such a good and useful wo man. We will bow in submission to our God. We tender tho family our sympathy and ask God's blessings on them. It was a treat to those who had never seen it. It is our painful duty to chronicle the death of Mrs. Knight. Which oc curred on the 0th inst. Hor remains were buried on tho following day in Warrior Crook Cemetery. Claudius Burns, a lli year old boy, had the misfortune to get his shoulder dislocated the other day. It was caused by a hard fall in a wrestling combat. Misses Bllaand Lula Boyd, of Mount ville, a'11 visiting their sister, Mrs. Monroe. Miss bailie Monroe, of Goldvlllo, is visiting in this section. Miss Lula Pitts, of Breworton, is Visiting Miss Mattio Balentino. Wo enjoyed a tine sociable last night (Wednesday) at Mr. Joe Monroo's.
