At about eleven o'clock Saturday
night the alarm of lira was given and
a servant's house on the promises of
the Rov. .T. I). Pitts on upper Main
Street was discovered to bo in Humes.
Tho lire had gained such a headway
that efforts to save the house were fu
tile, but fortunately the wind was
blowing in such a direction that the
surrounding buildings wore in no dan
ger. The house was inhabited by a
colored woman, who had locked it up
and gone Off for the evening, leaving a
lite burning. There was no insurance
on either the house or contents.

The Good Templars, though they
have quite a largo and enthusiastic
momemborshlp, appointed a committee
or rather enlarged their committee on
entertainment and that honorable body
proposed an "Observation Party..' A
table provided well llllod with
about 50 different articles. The person
that remembered and wrote down the
greatest number of articles soon got a
valuable prize in tho shape of a pound
of Tonnoy's candy. Mr. Thompson re
ceived the candy and Mr. Wiley got
the booby prize, which was an ugly
shaped face. The party was hugely en
joyed by everyone present and Brought
forth quite u compllmontarj resolution
from Bl'O. K. L. Fitts. ft created new
enthusiasm umoug the members, and
something w ill be givon every meet lug.
Hro. Nash, who hie* served the lodge
so long as lodge deputy, resigned that
position much to the rogrot of the

Our school teacher, too, has gotten
into the habit of straying off in a buggy
by his lone self. in the school rooms
though bo seems to be giving satisfac
tion and his school has grown to be so
large that an assistant will perhaps
have to be employed.

awhile and return to college in Oct.
Our Kdeu two-weeks club, a debating
and literary Society organized among
us by Mr. TI. 15. Nabors. of WotVord
College, is a complete success. Both
the bouse and yard were crowded at
our last meeting.
The houso Of Mr. l'inekney Baldwin
was broken into one night last week
and his trunk containing some fifty or
sovonty-flvo dollars was carried off to
the woods and torn t<> pieces. The
thieves though in rumaging through
the trunk found only about ten dollars
and left the rot scattered among the
torn up trunk and clothing.
