All mistakes in accounts will bo gladly corrected. Where We Are Located. Thut body of organized Ameri can votots who have for u century advocated a strict construction of tho constitution, opposed centrali zation und paternalism in the gov ernment, and insisted upon econ omy in tho administration of pub lic affairs, have been known as democrats. They have upheld as their loading principle that the government should interfere as little as possible with the individ ual. .Such schemes ns the Sub-treas ury and the governmental control pf railroads, whatever their exped iency, nro not and cannot be made democratic by resolution of any convention, because they di rectly conflict with these principles. If tho national convention which meets next year should endorse the Ocala demands it will bo no more entitled to tho name ''Democ racy" than will the convention which speaks out for the Protec tion theory. Democracy is not n sort of bunting from which a can didate may with a pair of scissors cut a strip, tie it to a slick and seek election while ids political doc trines are of an opposite color and strange pattern. Such a democrat might with equal precision call himself a whig, a tory, or a Turk. If then the party which has here tofore been democratic in its tenets adopts the Ocala demand**, il will lose its democratic character, but the advertiser does not say that it will oppose it. There is no dodg ing the bald fact that white doml nanoy is the necessity to which all others in Southern Polities are sec ondary and trivia!. The ascen dency of tho white man In polities i? cssontial lo the safety of the white man's social life and this is nearer to the Advertiser than all other party interests combined. Kather than help to divido the white people on this issue, the ad vertiser stands ready to surfen der any other political conviction it may hold, and answering a ques tion put by the Greenville News, promises to fight any faction that appeals to negro votes; this so long J as there Is a distinctive white man's party to which we may rally Wo have only the kindest feelings toward tho negroes, believing them to bo a valuable and in many re spects an admirable class of peo ple, deserving fair treatment and strict justice, but the white man must maintain that wise control of which they are incapable. The Ocnla demands are national in their character and can only be come laws through enactment of Congress. Therefore, only the ac tion of some national party can af fect our fiction towards them, and tho voice of a slate convention would moan nothing to us. We should of course work for a Sub treasury candidate for Congress against tho candidate of the negro republican party Just as wo did last year. Tho adoption of tho Ocala de mands by tho National Democratic j Convention next year would iu our judgment result iu tho formation i of a Third Party, becauso the dem ocrats of tho North and East would H?t SWalloW them. Neither would tho Advertiser if it was a Now York paper, but hero it will pull in harness with tho people's party. This is not a time for "genuflex ion and circunilloxion" and so we have stated our position as clearly ns wo we kuow how. Congressman Clements, <>f Geor gia, wanted to be Interstate Com merce Commissioner but a party qf colored men at Washington urged ngninst him to tjie president that ho had refused to stay at a hotel whero colored people wero entertained. We think that tho school commissioners should always como from tho ranks of tho teachers and should be select ed by competitive examination, due consideration being given to char acter, experience and proficiency in tho practice and theory of im parting instruction.
