There was opposition to thc bill to
refund to Daniel Heyward, surety for
W. F. Colcock, ante-bellum collector

Senator Lei tiler attacked it on the

The war department has recently
received such reports hom the officials
in Utah, regarding the very unsettled
condition of affairs in tho territory
growing out of the enforcement of the
laws against polygamy, as to cause
some uneasiness but no alarm. Thc
recent shooting' of a Mormon by a
United States marshal created a great
deal of ox ol lemont among the Mormons
and sonic apprehension was felt al
Salt Lake timi there would bc an up
rising among them. A battery of
artillery was recently ordered from
Omaha to Fort Douglass, which is
siluated a few miles from Salt Hake
. City. This movement, however, was
not particularly on account of any fear
of a Mormon rebellion, but had been
in contemplation for somo lime. The
force now nt Fort Douglass consists of
a lull rcglmcntof infantry and a battery
of artillery, and is under command of
(Jen. McCook. In the event of trouble
in Utah all thc troops in the depart
ment of tlio Flatte, consisting of about
.'{,000 men, could be concentrated at
Kort Douglaes in a very few hours.
No serious trouble, however, is appre
hended by army officials.
