Charleston Tigers Pay Fines.
Charleston special of March 7
to The State:
? A record was scored today in
the city court when 45 convic
tions were secured for violating
the dispensary law, netting the
city $1,225 in fines. It was red
letter day Judge Jervey sat on
the bench for three hours hearing
the statements of the police offi .
cers on the guilt of the accused,
and their statements in reply,
but the evidence of the police
6eemed convincing in every case,
and the 'blind tigers who made
less of fight against conviction
fared the better. The cases disposed
of were all by the court,
without a jury, but three hours
were not sufficient to hear the
cases of the blind tigers, even
those who were willing to leave
their cases to the hands of the
court, and bright and early tomorrow
the docket will be again
attacked.
The violators who threw themBelvep
on the mercy of the court
were given a sentence of $25 or
10 days in jail, while those who
presentee witnesses in tneir Dehalf
and otherwise interfered
with the rapid revolving of the
wheels of justice, were st ruck for
$50 or 30 days.
Forty one blind tigers were
given the smaller sentence today.
Three tigers demanded jury trials,
and their cases went over, for the
court wanted no delay. Seventyfive
cases were made out by the
police, and the rest of the calendar
will be taken up tomorrow,
but it is likely that the jury cases
will be deferred until later in the
month.
