Noldier of Two Wars Celebrates
His 80th Hirthday
On February 25th, 1904, Mr.
Aaron Adams, living near Primus,
had the pleasure of meeting many
of his children and grandchildren
and other friends at his home.
* Twenty three grandchildren, two
sons and three daughters were 1
present, and in all there were 63 1
present for dinner. It was a very

of the oldest veterans in the eastern
part of the county, as all took '
leave lor home not knowing that
we would meet again in this life.
Mr. Adams was a member o( the
famous Palmetto Regiment in
Mexico, of which its last survivor
will soon have passed away and
the time cannot be long, lor Lan- '
caster county has only three liv- '
ing?Ca-pt. McManus and Mr.
Clanton being the other two. I !

roll-call in the world beyond, i

small pension which helps them 1
in their old age, and although ]
they served in the Confederate .
war and took part in some of the i
hardest-fought battles and were 1
wounded, yet our proud Palmetto
State will not allow a Mexican
soldier that draws from the U.S. 1

these Mexican soldiers. My ex
perienee is that nothing is lair in <
war, and not much in time of
peace.

to The Daily Telegraph
from Yin Kow, dated February
29, says: "Fifteen Japanese
warships furiously bombarded
Port Arthur from 10 to 12
a'clock this morning. The
Russian cruisers Novik, Askold
and Bay an, accompanied by
four torpedo boats, steamed out
to meet the attack. They were,
however, forced to retire. The
Askold was in a sinking condition.
The Novik was badly
damaged and a torpedo boat
was sunk. The Russian battle
ship Retvizan was again dam
aged. The Japanese withdrew
in good order."
Chefoo, Feb. 29.?The Twenty-ninth
Japanese infantry occupying
Ping Yang, midway
between Seoul and the Yalu
river on Sunday met a body of
Russian cavalry scouts north of
Ping Yang and drove them
back.
It is estimated that GO,000
Japanese troops have landed at
Uhemulpo. The transports now
are not escorted by war vessels.
The Japanese sailors who
manned the merchant vessels
which wore sunk at Port Arthur
on landing here, shaved their
heads as a mark of disgrace
they felt at the failure of the
