Mr. Bryan in Spartanburg.

Spartanburg, Feb 19 ?Hon. W.
J. Bryan spoke hero tonight to
about 2,000 people in the Converge
auditorium, the largest
hall in the city. The subject of
his lecture was "The Value of au
Ideal." He did not refer to the
platform of 1896, but advocated
giving the people whatever the;,
desired?a gold standard if they
, wished it; a double standard if
they preferred it, or any other
system that the people might
want. He appealed for a hicher
# ideal in politics and for the closer
union of the government and the
people. He declared that tho
young men of the country should
be brought up with the idea that
to participate in politics was
noble and honorable and should
be taught to have a political ideal
wherein should be the purification
of politics.
Mr. Bryan stated that the
party with a high ideal, though
often cast down, would finally be
the party which would draw to it
the only people who were worthy
Of belonging to a party.
The speaker closed with a magnificent
tribute to the American
llag, which he said should stand
out so that any persou in any
part of the world should recognize
it as one flag that stands for
human rights.

Death.
The State, 17th inst.
That was a terrible death poor
little 3-year-old Cornell Bonueau,
son ot properieior Bonneau ol
the Caldwell 1 otel, met yesterday
afternoon while laughing and
playing in the joyousness and in
nocence ol childhood with his 5
year-ol 1 broth -r, Campbell. They
were in their playroom on the
third lloor ol the hotel on the
Taylor street side ot the building.
I While the two were playing at
rolling over some mattresses Cor
nell tell against the sash. Sever
al panes ol glass gave way and
the little lellow fell three stories
to the cruelly unyielding llagstones
on the pavement below.
Ol course the child probaly never
suffered any pains alter that
sickening thud with which his
tender frame met the pavement,
but it must have been a horrible
t rant si ion from mirth to terror,
mercifully swift though it was, as
the little fellow was passing from
that last jolly sommersault over
the mattress through the air to
death below.
With a grip tightened by the
terrors of death before his eves
the little fellow carried two pil
lows down with him, and to this
is due the fact that he was not instantly
killed. Tliis shielded
his body against the stones, but
his head struck over them apparently,
and his skull was so badly
fractured that he died a short
time after reaching the hospital.

A popular preacher tells a
pood story of a young clergy mm
who launched out. on strong temperance
sermon, says Tit Hits.
When he had finished, a deacon
said to him:

Presiding Elder Arrested.
The sheriff of Newberry has
long had a warrant for the arrest
of Presiding Elder C.L. Archer,
of the Abbeville district, living
in Columbia, who was charged
with breach of trust while serv- j
ing churches in this section. It '
seems that he bought a stove and
failed to pay tor it, while the
money had been handed him by
me cnurcn 10 pay me debt. The
sheriff went to Columbia tor the
fourth time to arrest the preacher
and returned yesterday with his
clerical prisoner. The case was
compromised hy Archer paying
the amount due Mr. S.P. Boozer,
from whom the stove was bought,
and the costs in the case.?Newberry
